The state should intervene whenever there is a market failure leading to the under-provision of pluralism, which should be considered as a key public good.

You could read the above to say that the government can fund the BBC and Sky can go take a running jump.

his legal situation was anyone else's fault but his own

I'm still not sure what it is he is alleged to have done wrong.

He was allowed free access to the papers because of his associate status at MIT.

Apparently there was nothing to say that he couldn't redistribute the papers.

What he seams to have done is automate the process of downloading them and when his system was blocked, changed his MAC address.

I don't recall there being any laws about changing the MAC address of your net work card, or writing a script to automate a boring task.

But then I'm just a Geek, so what do I know.

I log into steam on my Steam box and play some games with the kids.. Once the kids are in bed I go up to the Den log onto Steam and see the same list of games.

Steam is DRM done right. In that as long as I can prove to the Steam servers I am the same person who bought the game I can down load it and play it any where I can get at the Steam client. This also means that as long as there is a version of the game for which ever OS I'm currently running, be that Windows, OSX or Linux I can play my game on that OS without having to buy a new version of the game.

I hit one that limited me to *8* characters!

8 characters was the number of significant characters used in the Unix crypt() function.

Why?

There are lots of things I would like to buy. Old CD's, DVD's only available in foreign, but still English speaking, markets. Books that are no longer in print. Old Computer games. I'd even pay a premium for them. But I simply can not legally get hold of them because the company that holds the IP rights refuses to make new copies.

f you are naive enough to believe a music executive isn't using drugs, learning sex or pirating, you must live under a rock.

The police did their job, nothing more or less. Copyright holders are forced by law to act on piracy so hating them is ignorant and futile. The problem Apple have with phones

is that they came rather late to the party. All the other mobile phone operators have worked hard to ensure that their kit works together and seem to play nicely with each others technology. Apple has stumbled into the park and demanded to be allowed to play along without contributing anything towards the equipment. And just to annoy the other players, they are trying to claim exclusive ownership of the lines on the pitch
