Benchmarks?

I get that the extra CPU grunt is being used to decode things, but for NAS type work, surely the key issue is I/O? If the SATA port is also on the USB2 bus, then you're going to have the exact problem as the Raspi...

Fortunately a google away puts the combined disk-to-network speed at ~55-60 MB/s read/write, easily out pacing the Raspi's 3-8 MB/s over its shared USB2 bus.

The Mother of All Demos

That was at the Stanford Research Institute, Demo given in 1968.

From the Wiki artice:

"As the seventies started, much of Engelbart's team departed ARC and went their own ways, with many of them ending up at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Centre (PARC)"

So Xerox didn't invent the GUI, but a lot of the team who did, ended up working there.

Virgin Media CUTS OFF weekend 'net surfers after embarrassing smut-filtering snafu

Glen 1

Re: Such things should be illegal

As I mentioned up thread. These filters were put in place to pre-empt legislation that the tories were going to bring in (that the Lib Dems objected to). Labour has said they would bring in similar laws via a BBFC style system.

So the this thing that should be illegal, will also be manditory pretty darn soon.

Glen 1

Re: I'm not with stupid

Downvote explanation:

"waste money importing a censorship system"

Cameron basically said to the big four ISPs (BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin) that if they don't implement censorship, the gov will legislate for it. While pointing at a consultation survey to say there was a demand.

Example question (paraphrased from consultation survey):

"Should everyone have their internet connection censored, or just people who live with children?"

This legislation was rejected by the Lib Dems. Labour has said they would introduce a mandotry BBFC style system. Don't blame VM for scummy censorship when it's our political masters who made the decision (or implied menacingly that they would).

Source (with citations)

"Openreach don't even see inside your packets"

As you know, Openreach is not a consumer ISP. It's the companies that buy services from Openreach that are introducing the filters. Such as (i dunno hmmmm let me think) BT, Sky and Talk Talk.

From Wiki article:"Default filtering of existing customers will be implemented by all four major ISPs during 2014 with the aim of ensuring that the system applies to 95% of all households by the end of the year"

"spam customers to arm-twist them into using it"

I have recieved precisely 2 emails on the subject. One with the announcment, and one with the big ON/OFF buttons. Hardly arm twisting.

"force it on everyone by mistake anyway"

It is not by mistake. It is part of the threatened law. Again, that is not VMs fault. (looks meaningfully at Tory voters). If you've not turned it off from the email, it can be turned off via the ISP dashboard (under my apps->web safe).

Re: lack of 2G signal

I thought the point of a lot of the 4G tech was greater capicity with fewer/same number of base stations?

It struck me as odd in the reg review of 4G tech where it assumed 3G coverage had been relegated to being a poor neighbour. The logical answer is that its just the 4G stuff doing its job from the same base stations. Isn't this why the lower frequencies were being rejigged/auctioned? To allow greater range?

TBF I have 3G turned off most of the time on my aging phone. I like the battery lasting more than a day, and only turn 3G on when im browsing.

A note about the power of marketing:

I don't mind the people who weigh the pros and cons and decide a particular product is worth paying top dollar for, my issue is with the mindless 'oooh shiny' brigade.

Thats where a lot of Apple hate comes from. Not that their products are bad (though pricey), but the shit eating grin on the face of the muggle who's bought the latest product on, or just after launch day. Especially if they upgraded from the only-incramentally-inferior previous model.

It makes the people who choose Apple products for more logical reasons (such as work, percieved build quality, resale value) look bad. Some Samsung fans have been gulty of this as well in recent years.

Trolls pop malformed heads above bridge to sling abuse at Tim Cook

Re: going out of his way to feed the trolls.

You have to shine a light on cockroaches so they realise they should scurry away.

By standing up and being counted, Tim Cook is contradicting a certain kind of narative that goes on in anti-gay circles. No, gay people aren't 'deviants' on the fringes of society. Being gay doesn't magically make you a pedo. In more enlightened societies, you can be successful and gay.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love IPv6

Glen 1

NAT vs stateful ACLs

The thing about ACLs is(are?) that they are not likely to appear on any consumer grade kit (out of the box) any time soon.

Add to the mix wide open windows/SMB shares, and the usual disable-every-security-feature-to-get-it-to-work-itus, and im a bit worried. Many home networks security consists of "if you've got the wifi password, you can access everything. What do you mean its your address/surname?". Unless the belkin (et al) routers are going to be a drop-in replacement, with the ACL features there is going to be quite interesting times ahead.

Im not exactly comfortable with the idea that my potentially buggy code will be addressable from anywhere on the internet. If i was confident it was secure, i wouldn't call it a test server. While i might be able to cobble something together myself, its not something im going to be proficient at, because its something have never had to do before. (and my first hello world was decades ago :s)

Sorry to ramble, but there is a lot of FUD about IPv6, and that needs to be rectified before the article (however good) starts to hit a little too close to home...

Glen 1

Re: Open Source

that will mean flash takes longer to die.

Converging on one set of standard that can be supported directly the the browser makers is a Good Thing.

Open sourcing flash will mean those flash devs spend longer developing for a platform that will become increasingly non-default (users having download plugin, or it is flat out not supported) and see their marketable skills dwindle instead of biting the bullet and moving on. Indeed, perhaps the addition of former flash devs to the standards clamour will improve HTML/javascript/SVG. However, that would require feature requests/alterations to have a better reason than "because flash did it that way"

The real trick is the move from adobe flash professional to either EDGE or something like Aptana
