Horror AVG update ballsup bricks Windows 7

re The winner/ perfect solution

No Av is the way to go, yep, but not using your solution entirely. I would venture to add, using a virtual machine of some variant for your internet activities. That way you've only to reboot a clean virtual OS when it all goes tits up. If you keep a clean version available, takes what, 30 seconds.

So long as you do use a virtual machine for internet, there would be no need for firewall either, theoretically. Although of course one may wish to sandbox their virtual machine software as an added precaution, or if they have enough RAM, run it inside another virtual machine of a different make.

WikiLeaks ousted from Amazon US

Neal 5

No surprise here

More a reflection on the level of any kind of American led intelligence of any type, diplomatic or otherwise.

The whole exercise is one of futility, when will the powers that be in the US wake up to it. The horse has already bolted, or trying to put out a fire with petrol, whatever.

Hezbollah sting bust sees first phone-unlock DMCA conviction

Neal 5

Good to hear the American view for once

on what constitutes a terrorist organisation. Just like American political forces, Hezbollah operate in exactly the same way, they also heavily involved in political and social activities, not just bombing the shite out of some random stranger in a foreign country. The only difference I can see, is that one side are radical die hard right wing religious crackpots and the other are radical die hard non christian religious militants.

Reminds me of a joke. The difference between a woman with PMT (U.S.A) and a terrorist? You can negotiate with a terrorist.

Interpol issues arrest notice for Wikileaks' Julian Assange

Neal 5

Hell hath no fury

and all that baloney. And as well as upsetting the American pussy we find out that her *new* best mate Sweden will do anything for a bit of yankee money,(who's the whore) and re-investigate once dropped charges. Still we all realise, it is a womans perogative to change her mind. Especially if she can smell some extra $$$$$$$$$.

As for the two real woman and the allegations, who knows. If you've nothing to hide, then there's nothing to be scared of. So Mr Assange, if that really is the case, give yourself up voluntarily , get the matter sorted, continue anally shafting the Americans in exactly the same way as they would you.Afterwards. Simple.

WikiLeaks re-taunts feds with US Amazon mirrors

Neal 5

Twisted

that's the American view for you. Perhaps the US ought to stick to things they can handle internally properly first, like taxation, homelessness, immigration, prison overpopulation, drugs, guns and gun ranges (that don't allow the voluntary murder of 8 year olds, theres not many, and I know that's just a pipe dream), spam, cyber crime, and a justice system that doesn't depend on the size of your bank account (we call that corruption, in most democratic societies), the list could go on forever.

Perhaps Wikileaks is just the easy target and takes Americans away from the real world problems that exist, eg America.

Mozilla rages at MS, Apple and Google's 'trojan horse' tactics

Neal 5

Read all the above with interest.

The only conclusion to draw from the above chaff, is that this issue is Windows OS specific. Therefore the only safe decision to make to avoid all of this non consequential plugin crap, is to switch to a Linux OS variant, which will instantly solve the whole mess, and save the world at the same time.

Or if you really are so concerned about this don't use FF, whichever is easiest. Difficult for some, I know.

USA to bin colour-code terror warning system - report

Neal 5

Terrorism from whom,

the way I see it, we actually have a limited external terrorism threat, but a major State wide attempt at inducing terror into society. The reaction by governments to something that could be handled far more "discreetly" is terrorism of the worst extreme designed for control of the masses not for freedom of the masses as they would have you believe.

Attachmate: Novell's openSUSE project is 'safe'

Neal 5

Haven't we all heard this before.

Maybe that was Google 'tho, or was it Apple, or Microsoft, or Oracle. My memory is a bit shot lately due to an overdose of SAP/HP/Oracle backtracking and obfuscation.

Opera 11 goes beta with extensions, stacked tabs

Neal 5

First impressions.

Unlike Chrome,Mozilla, IE or Safari, this beta hasn't sent my CPU into a 100% cycle or blitzed my RAM to the extent that my pagefile keeps saying system memory status is low. That's impressive on this 12 year old machine.(celeron 512mb, linux sucks it dry in about 30 nanoseconds.)

I'm sure if I banged it onto my i7, or any of my slightly less new chipped boxes it would perform like a dream.

Google lures Microsoft Officers with Docs plug-in

Neal 5

@No love for Libre Office?

"If they would open it to Libre Office and if they could get the formatting consistent across all three this could be interesting."

I was under the impression that this was what .PDF was all about to begin with. I'm not familiar with Libre Office, but surely it can handle the .pdf extension. Or there should at least be some sort of plugin available for the extension.

The problem would probably lie elsewhere, say with PowerPoint type presentations. Spreadsheet and Word Processor formats are fairly much compatable across many "Office" type suites. Heck, even 12 years ago, LotusSmartSuite could handle Office extensions and vice-versa, not much can have changed since then.? Maybe.

Putting the internet into neutral, or neutering the net?

Neal 5

Propaganda is as

it is. Doesn't matter what colour you paint it. A shit is still a shit. Swallow this crap at your own risk.

There never has been, and never will be, such a thing as net neutrality.

The more laws you make, the more criminals you get.

"Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed at influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position."

For those of you who don't know, or don't remember, this was something that Hitler was extremely good at. Whatever you say, he was a massive motivator.

Unpatched IE bug exploited in targeted attacks

Neal 5

So

OK, targeted attacks. Any info you care to share, like what is the website that is malicious.?

Yep, lots of flak for Microsoft again for an unpatched unknown vuln, and yet no real real antipathy for the real culprit, the author of the malware.

Can I ask, one more time, when will you see the situation for what it really is.?

I think you will find that any version of IE or any version of any Microsoft product actually does do what it was designed to do. The problem lies elsewhere than in Microsofts hands alone.

Please focus your attention on the real problem. 1000 anti Microsoft words do not dilute the problem, they just show a lack of comprehension on your part. Even if you say that you are just representing the facts, I question your bias, the reality here is a malicious attack by perpetrators as yet unknown, not Microsofts failure to address the problem. If there is a problem, it is your failure to represent fairly, the nature of the attack. Many people would like to know what, where, when and how the attack takes place, not just that Microsoft haven't yet fixed a problem beyond their control in the fact of deployment and method of attack.

I am sure Microsoft will rectify the code that allows the malicious attack by the perpetrators once all the analysis has been done, but it isn't anything that can be planned for in that much of a specific manner. Unlike your bias which is premeditated and constantly on show.

So just to balance out your bias, here for those actually interested in security, are the latest for Linux, and that's just so far this week, by my calendar, in my part of the world, there is three more days to go. And Mozilla haven't exactly worked overtime to fix their bugs either, so switching browser isn't a going option really either.

Sony soars, sinks, soars on Apple buyout rumor

Neal 5

It's amazing how minds work.

To be honest, just reading the headline of the story, I was wondering if Apple were the purchaser, or the purchasee.

The first para of the story clarified the matter for me. But now I wonder, what if the parties had been reversed, would we have seen equal stock fluctuations in both companies.

On balance, perhaps a merger would be best, obviously not the sort of rumour to enable Wall Street to make obscene amounts of money on a convoluted artificial market made by themselves, purely for their own benefit. A bit like the credit crunch, but obviously the lessons from that have been learnt and no enviroment could ever be created to cause that effect globally again.

And a good job too, 'coz there is no money left to bail out the banks again so shortly after the last effort, that left in the region of 80% of countries on the verge of bankruptcy. I for one, would not support the bailout of GoldmanJPMorganStanleyNomuraFargo conglomerate and their associated acquaintainces, for another ride on the same failed merry-go-round, at my expense.

Adobe Shockwave bitten by code execution bug

Neal 5

Unpatched,

Not quite sure what you're expecting. Only disclosed on Thursday and still unpatched. What, is this slovenly or something, or should it have been patched, and then there would be no story. Perhaps a list of the booby trapped videos would be more helpful, so we all know what to avoid, or should we just uninstall Shockwave and totally disconnect from the internet, until either Shockwave is patched, or the booby trapped videos are removed, whichever is quicker.

I still don't understand why your focusing on the software and vendor for things that aren't under their control, if in theory Shockwave or any type of software could be coded to prevent every single permutable threat, then every one would be complaining about bloat, and your home pc/laptop/netbook/tablet alone would need to run it's own datacentre just to function. Not exactly the sort of thing you can just tuck away in the corner of your room really.

Mozilla man accuses Jobs of 'bypass the web' scheme

Neal 5

Mozilla Beta.

Partially agree, from an "app" builders point of view, surely it's better to have the web rebuild to fit your spec, than to actually change your beta to fit the web, which works with non beta versions of your product.

Conclusion, FF4 Beta (x) has obviously reached final distribution stage, doesn't need fixing any further and is sure to provide the ultimate web viewing experience, just so long as everyone with a website changes it to accommodate Firefox.

Microsoft gets in a spin, announces Office 365

Foxconn fires back at abuse allegations

Neal 5

Why look at the Chinese Gov.

Doen't the problem lie with HP, Apple, Nokia etc, who use Foxconn for their products. In fact didn't a recent missive from Apple say that Foxconn was just perfect?

I seem to remember that Nike got major flack for the use of "sweatshops" for it's products and a global boycott threat against it's brand. Funny how americans react when it's something really important, like where am I going to get another dirt cheap useless gadget from now.

Ubuntu 10.10: date with destiny missed

Neal 5

Partitioning isn't really an issue

with Ubuntu or it's lack of it automatically. Suse also automatically partitions, and in my experience, Suse is a lot less user friendly than Ubuntu. Is there actually any real benefit from partitioning, unless you intend to dual boot with another OS. For Windows systems I can see the reasoning for it, with Linux, I cannot. It's just todays way of thinking, and virtualization is eliminating that, along with movement towards cloud computing where it's pretty soon going to become someone elses problem anyway.

Net TV to consign Net Neutrality debate to dustbin of history. Why?

Neal 5

another point

Whilst I understand why everyone is UK focused, how would this make any difference to either the Beeb or UK based ISP's to foreign based clients. I know there are many who use not only the Beeb's streaming service but others too,(Hulu,Sky etal via a proxy) whilst living abroad, theres a double or triple whammy there, not only UK ISP but the foreign residents ISP as well. So I'd gladly pay as the S.koreans do, less than $20 month for 100Mbit line. How are the UK ISP's going to justify passing a charge onto UK customers, as they will do we all know that, in excess of $20 for residents abroad. The only option they will have, is to take the highest rated country and apply that charge, so everyone will end up paying $50 a month for some pensioner living in Spain watching repeats of Eastenders using whatever bandwith is left out of my less than 1mbit line on an unlimited upto 8Mbit line package for which the fee is already in excess of $20. Is that right?

Jailbreak hole found in Apple TV firmware

Neal 5

$99 is not the buy in price.

seeing as the only option is streaming music or pictures at the moment, if you want movies, you'll need at least an ipod as well, an if you cant shift your arse an inch you'll need the apple remote too. I reckon the buy in for iTV is more like $500 not $99. Before you get into any extras. Is that not in itself monopolistic in exactly the same way as IE was with Microsoft?.

So, yep, jailbreaking is probably the cheapest option all round, unless of course you need to buy another new liver from some poor Moldovian peasant, who you think would do anything for the price of an iTV.

assuming of course that the developers actually get paid, and if so, on time. Or NOT. As many previous articles published by your esteemed rag point in a totally different direction. Of course ElReg merely points out these differences and has no direct control over whether iApple wedges out or no direct control over iApple's general policy about apps for iApple products , except other than to just fawn over the latest not needed gadget or its accessory.

iExpect much criticism for my obviously non iApple attitude and iam sure the iApple fanbois will vent their iSpleen or iBile from their renewed iLiver in much igushment. Can't wait.

make your own assumption.

Unless I'm missing something, of course................

Neal 5

Something's not right

am I the only one who is missing some important issues here, I am constantly amazed that some of the alledgedly most intelligent people in their respective area cannot get beyond the assumption that their intelligence is going to be at least on a par with any alien visitor. Take me to your leader? wtf is that all about then? first contact by radio, says who?, even without getting into realms of whether communication is going to be compatible with our technology, because we have to assume that we of course have the superior technology. And of course that all aliens will be compliant with our assumptions about them.

Still, as they say, ignorance is bliss, and I have always met a high proportion of very happy "intelligent" people. Sadly for me, I cannot lay claim to the same level of intelligence. There again my middle name isn't Spock and I've not got a Phd in bullshit which is a prerequisite for being "intelligent".

Mind you, it's very impressive, just like those lads from Manchester who can build orbital spacecraft in their garden shed. This must be the equivalent of them being hired by TopGear to attempt to send a Reliant Robin to orbit. Just as likely in real life, but a good jape all the same.
