The very fact that they shortened the Year 2000 problem to the Y2k problem is a crushing example of the sort of laziness in Information Technology that caused the problem in the first place.

Josh Rogan

Surely every movie with Josh Rogan in it should be considered an act of terrorism. Meanwhile the USA has been looking for an excuse to have a legitimate pop at NORK so maybe this is their excuse. Like hunting a Saudi in Pakistan was their excuse to invade Afghan and hunting WMDs that existed purely in their imagination was an excuse to invade Iraq.

Ofcom mulls selling UK govt's IPv4 cache amid IPv6 rollout flak

The Vociferous Time Waster

Re: Does anyone trust Ofcom to handling any IP addressing?

Those numbers and letters are just a hex representation of the underlying binary. You know that right? The addresses have gone from 32 bit to 128 bit so it is largely trivial to keep the same last 32 bits and add a prefix if that is how you want to do your migration.

Folks get all scared of v6 but it isn't really as bad as it seems.

Do you even know who your customers ARE?

The Vociferous Time Waster

In a real shop

In a real shop they know far more about you than most online retailers do. They know your lifestyle, what you eat, when you eat it and even what aisle you linger in longest. They know all about your wife, your kids and the packet of rubbers you bought on that business trip. Real shops know how fickle your are or how loyal to a brand and what sort of marketing works to make your change your mind. Etailers still have a lot to learn.

If you don't like this wear a mask, pay cash and definitely don't bring your cellphone shopping.

Certain regional news sites

certain regional news sites use a CMS that has an easily gamed 'most read' widget.

It doesn't use cookies or check browser versions or even look at unique IP addresses. All you need to do is loop a few times in a bash script to wget the page (minus all the chrome) to /dev/null and your favourite local cheese baking story or village fete shenanigans can sit at the top of the most read widget for as long as you like.

Police in U-turn as 'shop a gun-owner' hotline is scrapped

I want to be very clear that the vast majority of firearms owners in the UK are law‐abiding and safety‐conscious.

Given that fairly stringent police checks are carried out for both a FAC and a SGC you can be fairly certain of this.

The Vociferous Time Waster

Re: Right not privilege

An SGC is something you can get unless the police can give a reason why you can't have it. A FAC is something you can get if you have good reason to have it for a specific purpose.

Easy way to reduce dmca notices

if Google are getting swamped with dmca notices they should take the labour government approach and require all requests to be filed on paper in triplicate and signed along with a copy of the submitter's birth certificate verified by a solicitor, doctor, magistrate or justice of the peace. All forms should be discussed at a quarterly meeting and the minutes published in a locked storage cabinet with a sign saying beware of the leopard.
