Re: I wonder..
I think Amazon have been linked to sniffing round TI for their chips as they use them in the Kindle and have money to burn.

In many ways it is pointless as 3G could provide the data you require but fact is too many folks have phones and the masts and infrastructure are saturated and the telcos seem to not care. Given so few will be able to early adopt because of existing contracts etc it means if you are in a covered area then for a small rise in costs you can actually get what in all likely hood will be a shit fast service as no other bugger will be on the tower which will be fibered up to the hilt.
I often work in and around London and I can say that both my Orange work phone and my personal Vodafone phone really struggle, often I cannot receive email or make a call, and the thought of a using a data intensive app like Google maps is well roulette, I am almost always getting HSPA connections but it does me little good, luckily BT Fon or wifi or whatever they call it now coupled with free wifi hotspots means I can usually muddle through without too much hassle, but it would be nice if things just worked.
I don't want 4g I just want my phone to work, if £5 tax per month is what it takes I will probably end up over there unfortunately :(
Being that they turned off all analog channels to free up space how is it they only managed to squeeze a single extra channel in, which I am not sure is even an extra its just it was not named in the EPG.
Pretty pish poor I feel, should Freeview be that nobbled then they should have been promoting Freesat over Freeview for the change over as it seems Freeview is not up to standard already.
from my knowledge there is no authentication from the base station to your phone so if this cell was broadcasting/advertising as if it was from your operator there is no real way to know otherwise, and if its offering the strongest signal your phone will latch on over the real base stations in the area, all without you knowing.
there are some very nice talks on this from the ccc (c3) events over the last 2~3 years so might be worth checking out
Does XBOX Live with its credits also run on the same premise, and I bet MS take 30% from the devs also, and Itunes may be based around currency but you have to use it and again let the provider take their 30% skim.... how is it unfair for smaller developers on Facebook, but OK for others?
I would check the small print, no tethering on the payg at all, and on the contract phones you have to pay for a bolt on thats more expensive than the usual dongle broadband deals, its not a gratis add on to abuse the data plan you get with the iphone :(
shame as it could have been a wonderful dream,
