penguin folk

if people want windows, people will have windows. Anyway, its not the linux operating system that puts me off, it's the people that use it continuously telling me i am retarded for doing something different. So you know what? eff the penguin.

(obligitory car reference)

like driving a BMW. the cars themselves are very well put together, look good, go well, and all in all, are a good purchase. But i could never have one, as almost all BMW drivers act like complete twunts once behind the wheel. As such, i could not allow myself to be associated with such a group.

I'm enough of a twunt anyway without needing to publicly advertise the fact.

thank apple for pulling windows along with this thing called progress.

with no competitors, there is no innovation. with no innovation, there is no progression.

so thanks to Apple, and the icons from the ages past, novell, Ibm os/2, Be, and all the others who are lost and forgotten in the mists of time, for keeping windows uptodate.

lets be honest, if there wasn't anything else, we'd still probably all be on win3.x

just like firefox/mozilla/chrome gave us IE7/8 after how many years of IE6?

not too sure about the vista vs BSD kernals though.

weird proprietry display connector?

there's a standard for that .... now...

in all fairness, if this means we can have quad ports off the back of a standard GFX card, instead of those splitter things - that don't seem to be that compatible between ati/nvidia/matrox cards, then all for it.

also may mean that the monkeys in hardware can't screw up putting it together. "doesn't fit? just push harder!".

seriously. how you can get a PCIe x16 card in an AGP port takes a little doing, not to mention damaged splitters and card ports... but i digress...

MS home server users hit by Windows Live Custom Domains snafu

WTF?

@Christopher Rogers

my background is sun solaris, and intel/win server and support, so i hope you'll understand if i consider myself a little more technical than your average Joe Public.

i use windows home server, and have been very pleased with it. does an out of the box job very well.

except i've not been effected by this issue, no problems here.

so, no "crock", and no "microsoft fail lolz" i'm afraid.

Europe welcomes Dell's Mac Mini Zino HD

Andy 70

such a simple design brief

and they still manage to get it wrong.

looks bleh!

and why is it atom powered? mac mini stuffs a real processor and GPU under the hood, in a smaller chassis. stick win7 on there and you're laughing.

going for the consumer market i guess. people who don't know better, but just see the sticker price.

dell fail. again. stick to the corperate environment Michael. it's what pays the bills.

Mozilla aborted IE in Firefox clothing

Andy 70
WTF?

so what?

i use IE8. it works, is as fast as the speed at which it can get hold of the data, i have no issues with regard to page rendering.

it is supported within corporate environments for citrix, vpn web portals etc....

i don't get what all the crying is about apart from people trying to stick it to the microsoft "man"?

i guess i must be missing something here.

Intel lampooned by Nvidia toons

*sigh*

Nvidia it seems, has a name synonamous with childish self destructive behaviour, and history of alienating working partners and customers.

Pretty poor considering the company's foundation on the best and the brightest from Silicon Graphics, SUN, and later on 3DFX.

The sooner that they get rid of their egotistical muppet of a "leader", they may find their fortunes turn around.

and i hope they do. the thought of AMD/ATI's only competition in the graphics area being Intel makes me shudder.

because some pikey's had nabbed the overhead lines and other power related cabling.

sounds like china is whole-heartedly embracing capitalist business models from the looks of things.

there is no way we can hold this up as an example of "china is crap", when we in the western world are just as guilty.

i don't know what they think standard definition is if it's not DVD 720x576.

maybe saying "standard def", is their way of excusing the pixel blockyness of streamed content?

and pay for multiroom? when i don't get the same quality or amount of channels over skyplayer that i would do normally? wtf? yeah sure, that bird'll fly. if it was a free service like PC skyplayer, then cool. but it's not. so bye bye.

anyway, i run BBC iplayer with so called"HD" streams over 3Mb adsl with no problem. quality is acceptable on a big screen. dunno what you're whinging about with your la-di-da "i live out in the sticks boohoo" fancy pants 4Mb hook up. ;)

Toyota Prius fourth-generation e-car

Andy 70

the way i see it...

I think the real point of the arguement we have here, is not that a relatively economical car has been created, (good for the manufacturer to try to be better - bad as not entirely convinced on the materials chosen etc. etc.)

but that people who drive "normal" cars are treated with contempt, or even as downwright eco-criminals by a small minority of .. erm.. gifted individuals from within the prius membership, for 'not getting with the program'.

As such the persecuted group have no way of dealing with this resentment, so fall back to, as i myself do, to treating the entire prius group as a selfrightous and childish whole.

if they left us alone to sit and have a bit of an investigate, weigh up the options, then sure, maybe a few more people would drive a hybrid machine.

But no. having had prius owning superiority stuffed down my throat, had it inferred how backwards i am, and "maybe i'm too stupid to see the light". I am now much less inclined to follow that particular path.

i see a few parallels between macintosh and windows pc ownership.

but hey, thats just me.

Windows Home Server upgrade recedes into the distance

i need a "do not feed the ubuntu troll" icon

i on the other hand have found it most handly.

- running squeezeserver to feed its stored MP3's around the house to

suitably equiped rooms,

- being a network store for my media centre's recorded TV,

- automagically managing my disks with online invisable data mirroring across drives, dependent on what i want to mirror.

- able to wake up, then wake up other machines on the network, back them up, put them back to sleep again, and goto sleep.

- has a preconfigured service to provide a website to the outside world for your users to access files on the homeserver, and connection permitting, to remote desktop over the web onto it's console and or other connected machines on its network.

- being a NAS device that can actually get 40+MB/s over gigabit network....

i could carry on. but i actually like to spend my time using the resources and devices i have at my disposal, rather than balls deep in kernal code trying to get the thing to give me a display or even basic network capabilities. never mind automated systems management.

so excuse me if i pass by the option of the black and white beaked one, to do all that homeserver provides.

PC tune-up software: does it really work?

Andy 70
Thumb Up

missed one.

i dunno if you guys know of it, but google "windows live onecare"

and click on the free scan.

has made a 4 year old lappie run like new, after it had been butchered with spyware, various messengers, flash games and all the crud and detritous kids install.

the crucial scanner is good, but not quite good enough.

the father-in-law's laptop scanner results came up with 256Mb ram, with one slot free to take at most, a 256Mb module. i happened to have a 1Gb stick floating around and chucked that in. 1.25Gb total. works a treat. much better than the possible 512Mb max the scanner reconned.

however, it correctly diagnosed an old HP pavilion i had to only be able to take 512Mb sticks, as it wouldn't post with the 1Gb's i had in for a Dell... even after a bios upgrade. anyway...

i have the luxury of testing to confirm so i can see what i can get.

max your ram. it's cheap enuff. except SD ram. laptop shaped SDram seems to be about 50 sheets for a half gig. DDR1 mini dimms are getting pricey too.

otherwise, then go for a software tweeks. but for god's sake don't pay for it. most the "system optimizers" out there asking for credit card details are scam related.

looking at the "results" from the legit cleaner software, makes me wonder if that is a scam too.

i can sure live without Sophu*ked, crapafee, and crapersky killing off machines more often than a virus attack.

erm....

would this not just be an iMac with a HD screen, a couple of tuners, and frontrow or whatever installed?

bit of a generic leap to turn a computer into a TV... didn't they do this about a decade or so ago?

no doubt:-

1 - it'll be marketed as "the first"

2 - it'll be hailed as "the greatest"

3 - people in the street will be asking "why didn't anyone do this before?"

4 - everyone else will sigh dedgectedly.

5 - house prices will come down as the increase in thefts from propertys kick up a notch.

6 - 90% of those that have one, never actually use it to it's fullest extent. the technical equivilent of having your old VCR with the blinking 12:00.

Stargazers spy retrograde planetary bloater

mass, density, temperature.... or somefink

i dunno. something like if you have a hyperthetical ballon, and you are able to gently heat the gas inside the ballon without it bursting, then when the ballon is twice the size, it will be half the denisty for the same given mass.

so this thing is having half the mass of jupiter, is twice the size of jupiter, so maybe its structure is carrying about 4 times the heat energy of jupiter, if it has the same material composition.

given that it is so close to the sun, from what my skim reading told me, it's orbital period is under four earth days, an increase in planetary heating i'd think is a given.

but then if it had the same mass as jupiter, its gravitational effect would be twice as strong, and so it would be half its current size? ie, equal to jupiter? i dunno. maybe at room temperature, or in the bath big enough to float this monster - rather than the hostile irradiated vaccum of space maybe?.

what i think is amazing is that the planet's magnetosphere is still strong enough to maintain a gasous body this close to the star without it being blown away by the solar wind/radiation.

but then it is probably also driven by the same tidal forces from within the star that have given it such a funky orbital disposition in the first place.

but then, i have the mental capacity to be entertained by an elastic band untill home time

if it's such a problem not having the fastest connection, go for a wired hook up. i bet a bit of benchmark testing in a mixed b/g/n mode environment shows that there really is no advantage to "n" at all.

and for that WEP is fine.
