Ten... Freeview HD recorders

Danny 14
Go

aye

to be fair I must say I use iplayer more than BBC and if the other channels had similar offerings that can be played on XBMC i'd use those too (the itv one has horrific compression). Maybe a recorder would help me out. Still, i'd want it to replace the XBMC so ethernet streaming would need to work too.

they *do* exist as smallworld cable are using them in trials (customer trials).

Pick the right tools for your Office 2010 migration

Danny 14
FAIL

ok answer me this

Easy way to break office 2010, MS have no answer.

Scenario, existing 2003 installation with word, excel, powerpoint, access and outlook. Design your msp to remove 2003 EXCEPT word 2003. Install the new word excel powerpoint access and outlook.

Then have a user click the OLD outlook 2003 shortcut that they dutifully copied to their desktop because they are lazy and didnt want to go through the start menu with, then marvel as a limited user with no installation rights trashes the 2010 installation thoroughly (as the office shortcuts are advertised shortcuts that kill 2010 installations).

absolute fecking nightmare. The fix? remove and reinstall 2010 as it kills the MACHINE not the profile. Great.

'iPhone 4 to be free' when new iPhones ship

Danny 14

wow

£40 a month? I had no idea how expensive they really were. Surely it would be better buying an unlocked phone and get a cheaper contract? CAn you buy (legit) unlocked iphones - Ive never bothered with an i<thing> tbh.

Danny 14

really?

"The contract prices (on O2) are roughly the same for both Android and iPhone for the same minutes, texts and 3G internet access."

Not really. You can go to the likes of "buymobilephone.net" and get a like for like (on say a samsung galaxy S2) for much cheaper than a stock apple contract. Obviously if you walked into an O2 shop you are going to pay RRP. Like most things you can always look around if you like or simply walk into a shop and get fleeced.

r360

I too have an old 2007 r360 on CIS and a pair of R2400 on CIS too (and a dye sub 1400 on CIS) . The hack for the 360 is a right pain. I could only find one "dubious" site that had the hack. The 2400 was easily found. I needed to move the pipe from the right hand side of the 360 to a bottle in order to drain the ink. A proper frankenprinter but it is very very cheap to run. It is shocking how much ink is wasted into the drain bottle too.

Blighty's slow-crawling broadband streets revealed

price

why? On the surface they seem no more expensive than an ADSL provider. I suppose you have to use them as a telephone provider too but then again the line rental is comparable to BT.

There are good ADSL providers out there but even the venerable BE are now just as expensive as virgin.

No different than here in cumbria

there are LOADS of villages that have no broadband. Some have broadband but not enough pairs for everyone - DACS ahoy and they wont drop more cable. Luckily they are on the FTC trial (not the published *real* FTC rollout) so they will get decent internet eventually but with only 2 people laying fibre around E cumbria it will take some time.

'Find My Car' iPhone app finds anyone’s car

Danny 14
Thumb Down

really?

So someone driving a similar car to yours on cloned plates doesnt get you visited by the plod? Really? Care to explain that to my work colleague who has had congestion charge crap through the door AND a couple of visits from plod? A database is only as good as the information contained within and the data inputted.

And you would have an obligation as a number plate directly reflects back on the registered keeper. There is already case law compelling registered keepers to know who they have let use their car at certain times.

Danny 14

they still have obligations under data protection though.

Anti-gay bus baron rages at being stuffed in Google closet

Because he campaigned for something? It isnt like he shoots people in the knee caps or forces gay people off his bus. It isnt googles business to block "different" views. I suppose google also blocks swedish neo nazi searches? No apparantly not.

BT to fibre-up another 114 exchanges

Danny 14

too late for us

Since a small cable company covered carlisle in 50mb (and 100mb trial if you ask nicely) internet BT have slowly dropped off the map. Even businesses have swapped over.

Danny 14

not sure about the rest

we live about 4km from the exchange on ALUMINIUM cable. We got about 4mb (and 1mb up) on ADSL which was pretty decent I thought. Granted that was LLU with BE* but still that isnt too bad. Most merkins have worse. Sure im happy now we have cable but TBH I could still do the same trawling and video watching on the 4Mb line and at least it was stable.

Sure there are people who got superfast broadband earlier and those who got 20mb on the same ISP from the same exchange, but then again a bloke at the end of the road has an audi RS4 that i'd love too.

TMG isnt the only one

This has been on our network since ISA 2004. As a school we have always monitored "man in the middle" so to speak. Just issue a cert from the domain CA that is trusted throughout the domain. Stops people bypassing the filters via SSL (SSL is stopped then sent through the filters again before going back out as SSL).

Sure ISA 2004 had a more complex ruleset and im sure TMG gets it done a little more seamlessly.
