US sanctions on Turkey for Russia purchases could ground Brit F-35s

Re: That sounds like the story of a madhouse

the other classic is staying up all night to get a fix/patch/install but being denied a late start because its company policy.

That was the final time i worked out of hours on something that couldnt be prevented, the bosses soon started to ask me why there was a planned server outage during the working week and I happily brought up all the times I had requested funds for a redundant clustered set of servers so we could do rolling updates with no downtime (testing be damned, a lab setup was a pipedream of accounting).

Twenty years ago today: Windows 98 crashed live on stage with Bill Gates. Let's watch it again...

Danny 14

Re: My first laptop ran WIn98

incorrect. time computers were poor because of the kit. they were shit cyrix on shit boards with shit ram. Dell pentiums ran nicely on 98. gateway machines did too.

I had a small nt4 network with about 100 dell pentium 133s all with 98 (citrix login of course). they ran lotus notes and 123 just fine.

Danny 14

windows 98 wasnt too bad. it played with citrix faaaar better then 95 (and plus pack). The only issue was good old conventional memory. you needed close to 600k to get 98 booting without any issue. Not a problem for most 95 gamer guys (afterall we had 635k boot disks WITH genius network and mouse drivers).

NT4 matured nicely at the time and was better than NT3.5 I didnt mind 98. 2k were the hey days. I remember getting an early MCSE on server 2k and thinking it was totally revolutionary.

Re: so who do you report abuse to, now?

you misunderstand gdpr. If the visible registrar contact is a person then that IS personal data. Natwest have personal data on its employees. These employe3s data is needed to perform duties, it is reasonable that a registrar needs a contact in Natwest. Natwest are the data controller. They use a registrar as a data processor and will need a GDPR policy agreement with them. By the registrar posting identifiable data publically they are breaking GDPR as a data processor. Natwest will not be liable for the breach as the controlller as they have shown diligence with an agreement with the data processor.

they do have an agreement right? uh oh. if not that is in the 4% fine bracket if they have not bothered to get agreements. 2% bracket if they have at least some agreements.

Danny 14

Re: I think its fine to not have details public

not with GDPR in may. They will need your permission to do so, and specific permission too not a blanket catchall tick box.

Danny 14

Re: Bunch of petty autocrats

GDPR is hardly new. It has been brewing for 2 years now. Unfortunately some companies just cant be arsed doing anything about it.

Danny 14

Re: Unstable operation coming soon...

businesses are still covered with gdpr. ICANN is a data controller with data. That data might be personal data if an IT manager has his name and email address on there. Business or not, GDPR is about protecting data.

Re: Elvis has left the building

we have a 2 year browsing history for 1400 people. The dataset is about 1.2Tb. The sql server it sits on has a measly 4 cores and 64Gb RAM allocated to the VM. The actual physical server is a pair of R610s with dual quad cores and 192Gb ram connected to an MD3220i raid10 array using quad 1gb mpio. The same sql server also has a print manager dataset with about 400Gb and WSUS database plus sophos database giving another 300Gb or so. Response time is more than adequate.

the whole shebang is 6U high if you count the UPS and switch.

so what dear chap?

Thats just not cricket! If you want to get that sort of skullduggery done you need to grease an mp or two!

azure is useless for us though as our internet is not up to snuff.

Whois? More like WHOWAS: Domain database on verge of collapse over EU privacy

gdpr isnt new. people have sat on this for 2 years. all icann needed to do was have an opt in and a right to erasure. thats it. its not hard.

Microsoft says 'majority' of Windows 10 use will be 'streamlined S mode'

Danny 14

Re: Games, anyone?

microsoft are helping us start looking at Linux as a site altetnative. we are looking at using office 365 as staff outlook fix. that leaves the door open to start getting rid of windows desktops.

Danny 14

Re: Win 10 Stupid Edition

windows store for business is a complete mess. there is no way in hell a school would deploy a fleet of windows S over windows 10 education.

the licensing alone would be stupid as you would still need CALS and the cheapest way to get CALS is via educational licensing. this will get you office and 365 for your students.

not sure how this can be seriously pitched.

Spotify wants to go public but can't find Ed Sheeran (to pay him)

Danny 14

Re: If Ed Sheeran is feeling hard up...

lawyer. template letter. get list of artists. contact artists. offer services of 10pct. template letter. get spotify to pay. keep 10pct.

really surprised a sumbag lawyer hasnt done this already.

Danny 14

indeed. most buskers tend to collect their own money.

Danny 14

Re: Sounds like a ripe moment for a Class Action

I am surprised a scumbag lawyer hasnt gone to artists, collect a sum, appear on spotifies doorstep with a list of "requests" for mechanical royalties with teh locations. Afterall, im sure if an artist ASKED for it and provided the necessary legal details (such as a scumbag but still lawyer) then they would have to pay.

Danny 14

we dont use our 100mb line all the time but it IS used in bursts. The kids both go and turn their laptops on, windows downloads an update. I dont want my netflix turning to minecraft mode. The kids always have their phones on and the tablets are rarely turned off. Again, these might burst download rather than saturate constantly.

What we need more of is upload. Virgin are quite stingy on pushing stuff out of the house.

Re: Archive

we have a circa 1997 rewriteable CD and a burnt CD at work. it gets fired up once every 6 months or so to see if we can extract from it. It has a zip file full of data files and we are curious as to the lifespan. they both still work. The original unit was a HP 6read 2 write burner and the cds are also both HP brand.

we also have an ide 20mb 3.5" ibm branded hdd. we used to fire that up but cant be bothered any longer. im sure we can waffle together ide to usb but until we get a new apprentice we probably wont bother.

Re: I thought 20W50 only existed to pour into cars with knackered seals

with regards to squid, peek and slice works quite well. our domain has issued a domain truated cert to the squid box which happily man in the middles https. obvuously this is well written into the agreements (the actual agreements that the school will monitor all network traffic was writtennin from the first network which was nice )

so caching proxies are still useful even in https days providing your users are made aware of course.

We all hate Word docs and PDFs, but have they ever led you to being hit with 32 indictments?

Danny 14

word supports PDF for reading and writing. has done since 2013. Word 2013 does a reasonable job at taking apart most pdfs. especially ones saved or printed from word (ie via dopdf etc)
