"To lots of people, the request that guy made of you wouldn't seem particularly weird." - Hey, I'm going to take your work, change a few things, then call it my own would seem weird to everyone but you apparently. Idiot.
"They would think that perhaps you wrote the article out of an intrinsic interest in its argument, not just because you're a writer and you need to get paid" - Except that he works for a *wait for it* News Rag and it his job writing that puts food on his table. You are a moron.
"to many people, the mere idea of asking wouldn't be so laughably absurd as you seem to assume it is." - To ask permission to reprint the article giving proper attribution is not an absurd action. To ask permission to actively plagiarize it is. Now go away and do-not-come-back.

Eureka!
Thank you Verity for once again shinning a brilliant light upon my otherwise drab existence. I had at one time pondered the possibility of acquiring a robotic servant but alas was unable to secure said plastic and metal henchmen. Most fortuitously your article has materialized at a time where I have had a substantial (relatively) windfall that would allow me to bend one of these soulless minions to my will. I have since contacted a proper vendor capable of summoning said creation and have arranged for the transfer of power following the end of my daily 8 hours in purgatory. I look forward on unleashing the monstrosity upon the remnants of the floor covering in my lair this evening.

Apple not yet dominant enough for anti-trust action
Court case unnecessary
Simple economics will do. Already stated in the the article that iphone does not dominate the market on equipment numbers. How many developers want to continue to develop on a closed platform with 1/8 of the market vs. developing on a platform that is supported by the other 7/8s of the market? The iphone dominated when it had the first "popular" incarnation of apps and a market place but now that it is being replicated the iphone has lost its edge and its market share will follow.
Had Apple not locked the phone into specific networks and not locked down the development of apps I think they would have had a much larger piece of the market and would be much harder to compete with. Stanglehold control has damaged the product.
Philippines declare war on cyberlingo
Late to the party
This is no new language but a mutation of leet speak. That makes them at least 10 years late to the party. Look at the prior languages and know it is just a fad that will die out.
And shame on El Reg for not mentioning 1337 in the article. Then again, I can't say mad at you.... Want to go to lunch????

GCHQ imposes Whitehall iPhone ban
In need of some research....
RIM does not do spam filtering. That is what a hardware email spam/antivirus firewall is for between your email server/cluster and the rest of the world. They also don't mutate or effect attachments in any way. The Blackberry itself is capable of reading certain file types such as .doc and .xls. RIM simply passes on the encrypted packet from the BES to the handheld were it is decrypted.
Next time 10 minutes of research before spouting a bunch of garbage please.
US Senator wants Internet seizure rights
And this is exactly why....
Career politicians are a horrible idea. We have senators that have been in there so long they were members of the KKK. All they know how to do is talk and that is why they lose touch with the way real people actually live. We need term limits so we can flush the politicians out every 8 years or so. Maybe then the US Congress would be less worried about securing more power for themselves and more worried about how to properly govern a country.
Keep the internet free and kick these idiots out of office.
Microsoft throws Office 2010 at shoppers
Give it up
Not too long now and MS will have to give up the ghost. They have been over-charging for their glorified word processor and its iterations for far too long. Google has forced their hand and now they have to give it away for free. I have refused for some years to pay the extortionist prices for the suite and I approve of it's death with trumpets blaring.

Sorry Sarah, you know you can't get away that easily.
And as for the story, the only thing that traditional newspapers are still useful for is lining an area to catch the byproducts of a domesticated animal's digestive system. Anything that is that close to the political system of this country is already full of it anyway. I think I can safetly speak for the under 40 crowd when I say that they can stop using any words all together and we wouldn't care.
Internet 1 - England goalkeeper 0
Eh
Speaking for more than 90% of Americans, I am sorry that this happened. We don't really care about professional soccer over here at all and I think we should stop playing it so that countries that do care don't have to waste their time and have the potential for a mistake like this to make them look bad.

I apologize
I apologize for my misguided countryman. Seems we have a disproportionately high number of crazy people in this country. To be fair it all started with Them That Came From Across The Pond With Buckles On Their Hats (see: Crazy Religious British People). Just went downhill from there I'm afraid.

For the record.....
This is not your "typcial American". As much as commentards enjoy being snide towards anything having to do with our country, please realize that you only ever hear of the stupid people in the papers over here. It is journalism for entertainment not information. That all Americans sue when there is the slightest mishap is as accurate as "All Brits are missing most of their teeth, have huge floppy ears, and speak a near unintelligable language that they refer to as Proper English".
Not much of a surprise I suppose seeing how you hate your own country as much as you hate ours (from a generalized standpoint via these same boards).
Yes the mother is an idiot, as is the teen. I hope if they do sue that the court throws out the case and orders them pay for the money wasted even considering this for trial.

Apple races developer to censor smut
On the one hand.....
Yes, our country (us) has it's fair share of "save the children" baby-sitter conformist lazy schmucks. On the other hand, so does the UK from what I gather.
Regardless, this is less about removing material and more about changing the nature of the app and thus violating the policy that the dev must agree to.
Web swoons as Jackson dies
Apple sued for 30¢ $5m
Flow of events
If they contacted Apple, chances are they were told to stuff it. At which point (if the principle of the thing were important enough) your only recourse is through the legal system. 1/2 of $15 not being a whole lot, I'm sure the lawyers decided to try for the class action case and the associated "fees" therein.
Or maybe they are just a bunch of tossers going straight for the gold.
Either way Apple can settle this real quick with a $15 credit.
Please don't eat your horse, EU asks owners
Behind Microsoft's IE-free, Windows-for-Europe ploy
So don't sell it.
The majority of users want IE. They are familiar with it and don't see a reason to change. Removing IE looks like a fine compromise to me.
Personally, I'd do this though. Stop automatic updates and security patches to the EU for a year or 5. I don't like the monopoly anymore than anyone else howerver, including services in your OS is not manipulation, its added value. If you want something else you are free to install whatever you like. MS hasn't locked your computer out to different browsers/media players, its just that the competition doesn't have anything to offer that is worth switching to.
