We tried them but went with Appassure in the end. All I can say for certain is we did not want to stay with Backup Exec. It's antiquated with little support for current products. I'll be surprised if they have a user base left at all any more.

I've been running this since release, and it's been fantastic. The upgrade from 5.0 to 5.1 was extremely easy and done with zero downtime. I don't see where this would be a problem for any decent sysadmin.

The Truth

Most average users out there don't want any of this. They want a box that lets them go on the Internet. Maybe they will want some word processing or other utilities. Some software for poking at the pictures they take. This will be what came on the computer, whether that's Chrome OS, Windows, OS X or Linux (Very rare for the latter). Of course Windows is preferable as it's the most common and most things on the Internet are assured to work with it without faff.

This is really an article aimed at the slightly geeky looking to expand their knowledge but not really learn anything deep about linux. I avoid desktop linux like the plague. Windows runs 99% of the apps I need for my job, and 100% of the games to relax. Linux will be my server OS of choice but I don't want to spend time outside of work fiddling on my computer just for the fun of it.

You missed this off completely. It's far better than of of those listed and half the price. I purchased the 11000mAh one for my trip around Europe and it was superb. The new one is now 12000mAh with dual USB outputs. For the current £37 on Amazon this makes it cheaper than anything else here for power per pound!

I had my first experience with a windows phone the other day. It couldn't even receive a file via bluetooth. After half an hour I gave up trying to do a custom ringtone too. Lets hope they add basic features like this into WP8 because they're so far behind the competition they're just throwing money down a large hole at the minute.

Do It Yourself

As many have said, when the desire came out it was fantastic. They've already done one major update for it and it's been known about the hardware limitations for a while. You don't buy a PC and then 1 year later when a new OS comes out expect it to be perfectly up to scratch.

On the other hand Android has a fantastic community who have fixed all of the problems mentioned here. All of the latest and greatest releases of Android have been ported to the Desire, with and without SenseUI. Having space issues? Sort yourself out with Data2Ext and use your sd card as extra internal space.

The one thing HTC can do to help us even more is by making sure the source code is available in the future so that we can continue to do these things ourselves.

Set myself up a micro linux instance this week and so far I've been more than impressed with the simplicity. Like you the biggest worry is a ddos attack on it and no way to cap costs. I'm hoping it will be free but also noticed those low 1c charges. I quickly guessed it was the initial image transfer. Hopefully there won't be any more. Look forward to more of your articles.

It's all moot

I've used a Linux a lot in my time, and use all the competitors operating systems as well. My main gripe is that these new easy to use distributions like Ubuntu breed Linux fanboys (and girls) who actually know nothing about their operating system.

There's people who claim to be die hard Linux enthusiasts and actually install different distributions until they find one that works with all of their hardware. These people know nothing of recompiling their kernel and all of the fundamentals that make Linux great.

Mines the one without a gui thanks.

None of them actually charge for the browser? It's free!

On the point of giving users a choice, the ones that choose a browser different to IE would install it anyway. The others would just go with IE surely since they've bought a Microsoft operating system?

And as has been mentioned Apple are just as bad. I've recently moved to OS X and while I do enjoy it I also can't believe they get away with tying in the need for Safari. For those that say you can delete it, unfortunately some of the settings for OS X rely upon what you set in Safari. That makes it even worse than IE surely?

It's just all fanboyism at the end of the day!
