GCHQ was called in to crack password in Watkins child abuse case

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: 'cracked the password'

If it was the password to his laptop then it was in all probability his Windows password which is relatively easy to get hold of. The automated software they use to scan hard drives probably displays it at the click of a button.

Symbian Belle was on a par with Android 4 in terms of usability and its replacement Meego was done (insofar as updatable software is done) and shipped in a working product but both were shitcanned by Flop. Windows Phone 7.0 was barely finished yet was made Nokia's exclusive platform. Later events also lend weight to the Trojan horse theory.

I didn't know it. TIFKAM looks and acts completely differently to the classic desktop, why would I (or most people) expect classic desktop shortcuts to work?

For a start there are no windows in TIFKAM, what Alt-F4 does in TIFKAM is close the program, which is different.

For the same reason you need one to run Windows 8.1.

Actually if you don't want to open an MS account then you will find the option buried at the bottom of the create account page, obscure enough to make most people stick in their Hotmail address to carry on installing. I imagine the option to not use an MS account will disappear by Windows 8.2.

Re: Blimey, it's Chrome

The new UI bloke has got rid of the status bar, most of the options on the content tab, and CRL management, and is just about to break a load of extensions by dumbing down the UI. His answer to any perceived problem is either 'get rid of it' or 'make it look more like Chrome' (or both, which is often the case).

I've got five extensions now which are only there to bring back stuff that's been disappeared, but I imagine that eventually the authors of those extensions might get bored of having to maintain them either for personal reasons or because they're tired of constantly chasing moving goalposts.

There's no particular reason why my desktop browser has to look like my mobile browser. When I'm using my mobile I might want simple but that doesn't mean that I want a desktop browser that's been dumbed down to useless. In short, is there nobody better? Can't the old timers at Mozilla put this idiot back in his box? I take it they understand their userbase better than someone who spends their day snorting latte and pretending they work at Apple.

Rant over.

Originally MeeGo was due to be put on the N8 and E7 (with a keyboard), but things dragged on too long and Symbian got put on them instead. Then Flop came along and launched his contractually obliged phone in the least important markets he could find. The N9 form factor went on to be used in a dozen different Lumias.

You don't really need to know if who you're talking to is really them, that can be left to something else (e.g. DNSSEC, although that's probably breakable/broken too). You just need to encrypt and make mass interception more difficult.

Re: The gift that keeps on giving

UDF is a filesystem which should work on every OS released from XP onwards (OS X and Linux included), possibly even RT too. It's just a case of a big-enough company getting behind it. I think Google could push it if they wanted to, they made people download Android File Transfer for OS X for MTP.

Dan 55 Silver badge

Re: The gift that keeps on giving

ExFAT is patented so as to be impossible to implement if you don't pay the tax. FAT32 is only patented if the device understands Win 95-style long file names (and some argue read OR write LFNs but not both). Symbian 3 devices display LFNs in lower case which may also be a way around it. The solution is not to implement support for Win 95-style LFNs or if you've got good lawyers limited support for them.
