US nuke arsenal runs on 1970s IBM 'puter waving 8-inch floppies

I'd disagree on the "outdated" statement regarding COBOL or Fortran. I think you'd be surprised about just how much big data is handled via COBOL today and those systems dont generally have any plans to be migrated to a different language either....especially in the financial sector. It's still difficult to beat the performance that COBOL can have over newer languages, especially in a mainframe world. And like it or not, mainframes are still produced and are very popular and will kick the pants off any web-based GUI in terms of performance metrics.

Microsoft: Profit DECIMATED because you people aren't buying PCs

Totally couldn't be because they've had two major flop operating systems in the last 10 years or anything. They've released the auditors like crazy to try and make up for the gap in the earnings too. Office keeps expanding with products no one uses but doesn't really improve the ones they have. Their own products don't even work well with each other (version and features of SQL with various OS'). Azure's ok, but it's not any more special than any other cloud. They need to refocus efforts on improving their current product base and making them top-notch before they stretch out any more.

Symantec to offload Altiris: report

Re: Good riddance

Altiris WAS a great product, BEFORE symantec touched it. Like oh so many things that Symantec buys, it started as a really good idea and a pretty good product. Them Symantec goes mucking it up and turns it into a piece of crap. We recently changed vendors for those products because it had gotten so bad.

Move

Dudes, they simply moved it to be hosted by the new Apache Incubator. The site tells you that on June 1, 2011 it moved. And just below that it says that the move to the new system is complete. No conspiracy, they just off-loaded.

Anyone ever read the book Able One? Pretty much covers, in a fictional work, what really would happen. Stone Ages it be.

So all of you folks that think the officer was wrong and that he should have let her spout off....why should he? She was wrong, she was confrontational from the start (she should never have even gotten out of the vehicle), she was walking him into traffic (although he could have done a better job explaining why he was moving her back away from the road), and wasn't cooperating with the officer. Yes, officers are trained to deal with situations, but why should they allow people to curse at them or whatever? If I work at any place of business and a customer pulls that crap, I'm not going to follow "the customer is always right". It's called act like an adult and cram it folks. You broke the law, you were speeding. Pull up your Depends and take the ticket. If you're going to piss and moan, then you get tazered. It's better than what you used to get...ie the baton. So shut your trap and take it....you deserved it. Yeah I'd be mad if it were my grandmother, but if you're the one that broke the law, then shut it. It's not abuse, it's what they are trained to do.
