Google's .bro file format changed to .br after gender bother

Rafael 1

To others...

"...the word's been adopted as a prefix in the term ““brogrammer” that denotes macho programmers who bring sexist attitudes into the workplace and make life difficult for women in technology-heavy workplaces"

To be honest it is the first time I ever read about this. Before reading this quite tendentious definition I would believe a brogrammer would cover other brogrammer's mistakes or collaborate with other brogrammers projects' and drink cheap beer while coding. What a world.

Re: big move towards open-access publishing

Not really -- some funding agencies and/or employers (at least here, in a big, soccer-loving-but-lately-not-quite-as-good-as-it-was South America country that shall remain anonymous) doesn't cover publishing costs, and some OA publishing fees are well in the hundreds of dollars, sometimes more than what a PhD is paid in a month.

Then there are the predatory OA publishers, which are another problem...

Android M's Now on Tap cyber-secretary is like Clippy on Class A drugs

Rafael 1

Android M will also include much finer user controls as to what apps can access

Does that means that granma will have to ignore hundreds of options instead of just a dozen when installing a new app? Or will "user control" mean that the user controls what the app can do?

Isn't there a simple (for the users) way to ensure that no app would have undesirable side effects?

Sorry, I beg to differ. I have a Samsung 12-inch tablet which I use to read comics and technical PDFs (neeeerd!) and the experience is quite different from the one I had with the iPad. Depending on the price and weight I'd go for a 14- or 15-inch one, either Android or iOS.

Re: The joy of the walled garden

Just out of curiosity, what defines a "walled garden"? Is the ability of sideloading apps? Choosing other "official" app stores?

Honestly, just asking. If I am not planning on developing for the tablet (i.e. no need to sideload), nor want to jailbreak it, and just want to get content from the official app/media stores what is the difference?

Re: "Cupertino idiot-tax giant"

"I'm not sure I can imagine a Reg that isn't rude about a large corporation."

I think you're not really paying attention to the comments.

One thing is to be rude to companies, which is sort of expected in El Reg, even when the "rudeness" is no more than silly nicknames for the companies ("chocolate factory", "foxconn rebrander", etc) repeated ad nauseam. Some were funny the first two or three times but now are just plain annoying. I have the feeling that some "news" were just excuses to use those nicknames.

Another very different thing is being rude to the readers, regardless of their preferences (or degree of preference) for a brand. Not only it is not funny but immature.

Why Java would still stink even if it weren't security swiss cheese

I hate {Java, C, Cobol, Apple, Linux, Windows, math, Starbucks, those little colored things you put in cupcakes} because I was forced to learn it while I wanted to learn {anything but Java, C, etc.}. Later I had to work with people that used {Java, C, etc.} and that didn't help with my personal hatred, so I got some links to websites of people that agree with me and the conclusion is that it must die an horrible death. Here's the article. When can I expect my check?
