Parliament: Snoop Charter plan 'too sweeping', 'misleading', 'suspicious'

The "wrong hands"? (New Wallace and Gromit movie coming soon)

So after reading the government response to Theresa May's snooping bill. It's nice to see it shot down as being too broad, and too invasive... However, some of the frankly worrying things the government said stuck out at me, specifically this:

"We acknowledge that storing web log data, however securely, carries the possible risk that it may be hacked into or may fall accidentally into the wrong hands, and that, if this were to happen, potentially

damaging inferences about people's interests or activities could be drawn. Parliament will have to decide where the balance between these opposing considerations should be struck."

I think they've missed the point... I'm not against the government snooping on me and keeping logs on my internet usage on the off chance they get hacked and the data falls into the "wrong hands..."...I'm afraid that myself and many others consider THE GOVERNMENT the "wrong hands"... I'm not worried about my data being stolen by some third party abroad, I'm worried about it being used by a slowly growing Big Brother society in the UK.

"warning: PDF - yes, we thought it was all about "open data", too"

There's nothing wrong with using a PDF as far as open data goes. PDF has been 'free' since 2001. There are a host of non-adobe supplied readers. The Free Software Federation Europe points to some here: http://pdfreaders.org

I think you're SOL

I don't think there's anything (other than a computer) that can do this...

This is the wiki page for frontend hardware: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Choosing_Frontend_Hardware

If you follow the page, it will start explaining the UPnP side of things http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Choosing_Frontend_Hardware#UPnP_Playback

There are some *serious* limitations to using this implementation - pre-recordings only, no live ability.

You're going to need something like the Trimslice or an nVidia based VDPAU GPU...

"It would mean an end to those morning-after trips to the bottle bank" [...] and replace it with a much simpler two-trip journey to your closest cardboard recycling facility and a 400 mile motorway journey to somewhere that will recycle film.

"Coffee" comments

What's with all the snide remarks about starbucks coffee, calling it "coffee" (note the inverts) and the footnote in the article.

As much as anyone might hate their business ethics, you can hardly accuse it of not being real coffee. They grind it in front of you from beans, into two or three shots of espresso.

It's your choice to then down that in 40 fl oz of milk.

I drink my coffee how I like my men, strong and without milk.

Unity doesn't replace Gnome...It replaces the desktop arrangement.. All the libs are still there, the panels are still available - it's just got a new front end... Turn unity off, problem solved?

This is my fault

Sorry guys.

I received my free CD about 3 weeks ago.

I think the shipping costs to Scotland might have done them in.

ProTip!

Protip for anyone who's going to try installing the new OSC plugin with Outlook.

If you just blindly install Outlook will crash on launch.

In order to make it work properly, you need to;

1. Goto Add/Remove programs, find Office 2010 Beta

2. Choose 'Change'

3. Remove "Outlook Social Connector' from the application choices.

4. NOW you can install the new plugin.

We were testing at work the other day for linkedin, and had the above issue.

Typical MS Comments

I particularly like the posted list of current linux handsets - literally every decent phone on the marked bar the iphone...and even that's sitting on a unix derivitave.

Surely it's Microsoft that is the odd one out here? The one that has fallen out of the market? The one who will REALLY have to impress with WinMo 7. Really Really Really.

About the eye movements..

..surely this is more to do with people knowing the layout of Google and knowing where to look for what they want?

I can tell you my eyes lingered for a few more seconds on Live Se...bing, because it's new.

Won't be going back though..
