" but remember the universe was "
I thought you were breaking into song there!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving,
And revolving at 900 miles an hour,
That's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at 40,000 miles an hour
Of the Galaxy we call the Milky Way.
Our Galaxy itself contains 100 billion stars
It's 100,000 light years side to side
It bulges in the middle, 16,000 light years thick
But out by us it's just 3,000 light years wide
We're 30,000 light years from galactic central point,
We go round every 200 million years
And our Galaxy is only one of millions and billions
In this amazing and expanding Universe
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light you know,
12 million miles a minute, and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember when you're feeling very small and insecure
How amazingly unlikely it is your birth
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
Because there's bugger all down here on Earth.
saying "only as secure as the weakest link" - I disagree , If somone talks the guards into handing over the safe (loving these analagies btw) , and the safe is made of unbeakableium, then the contents are still secure.
the phrase "Two factor Authentication", which seems to be heralded as the latest , greatest and safest would be redundant if "only as secure as the weakest link" were true.
well to put this in perspective, maybe I'm missing something,
1) the hacker has to be in wifi range? This makes it a hell of a lot less serious in my opinion as I'm pretty sure the old lady next door is not going to exploit this.
2) to do any of that clever DNS stuff you need the routers admin password as well, posibly on some routers you can see logs without this
3) if you enable the mac address filtering , even somone who knows the wifi password wont get anywhere.
4) dont broadcast the SSID
5) use , wotsit called , psk2 or whatever
" you seem to have mixed up peoples names"
oh good its not just me! i quickly gave up the constantly changing names and actions in that first paragraph and skipped to the end, then the comments hoping someone else summed it up!
I wasnt intrested enough to go slowy and pick apart the sequence, its ither wrong, bad writing , or really complicated!
" whizz-whir desktop 3D printers that produce a range of useless, multi-coloured, thermo-plastic turds."
spot on. really sums up the whole thing.
apart from some level of initial prototyping , possibly.
I did see a thing on tv where the military claimed to be making huge saving by using 3d printing - somthing to do with aircraft parts, but i think they were talking out of their arses. They;re not known for thrifty savings.
all very true hippy, maybe signed files might help, this pain in the arse UAC stuff is probly saving a few people. But with the likes of Oracle and Adobe pushing shit like ask toolbars mcAffee free trial crap at every update its no wonder people get confused.
maybe people could opt for a walled garden setup when they buy the pc, that might help.
just having a few basic rules pounded into their heads would also help , i suppose they have to want to help themselves..
I'm am mostly posting this out of frustration , and this is a noisy keyborad, my typing now is probably being heard two doors down!
I am working temporarily , for a very large employer ( you'll have heard of them ) in a desktop capacity. I do all admin by logging into eah pc as local administrator.
I would much rather they pushed out an AD group into each machines administrators group and put my account in the AD group . This is because logging in as local admin only:
- you are not authenticated to anything
- no drives are mapped
the ball ache this causes is unbelievable , the amoutn of times i have to type my AD password in to get to a resource...
It also makes some tasks that should be transparent pretty much impossible such as remotely reading event logs or reading anything from AD.
I suggested the simple , elegent and probably industry standard solution above and got "well we've never heard of that" . At which point yougive up. Threres no point suggesting somthing so glaringly obvious, with the amoutn of OK ing that would have to come from all corneres all the way up the tree.
I'd just seem like some meddling newcomer saying "this would work much better if you put that there"
I just have to live with it
I'm investingating various tedious workarounds
in the past i've had a chortle at the funny new words.
I dont know whats changed but this time i feel sick.
Some media obsessed adhd twitter jockey kid mustve finished his media studies "degree" and landed a job at the OED. Ive never seen such a string of banal dribble. To even acknowledge the existance of such mind sewer filth as that essex bullshit in the OED is to piss on the union jack. Besides if they were gonna put amazeballs in it should have bee na couple of years ago , its been and gone now
right on.
Thats almost as much fun as :
"Yes we are aware of the problem , our engineers are working on it"
(Engineers in a different town who never answer the phone, email or instant msgr )
"How long will it be"
"I cant say"
can you ask them?
no, cant get in contact with them
this is system is always down!
um.....
what did I pay all that money for? can I speak to Roger the md?
no im not allowed to put you through to anyone
can i speak to to your manager
no im not allowed to put yoiu through
can you give me any idea how long the outage will be? hours? days?
no im afraid theyre not telling me anything yet
take a guess
I cant because sometimes in the past its been hours , sometimes its been days
your not a lot of help are you
no , I'm really sorry , trust me I'm almost as pissed off as you are.........
-------------------------------------------------------------
.... so i left that job
True AC 101, you find an ingenious way to fix a downed farm of servers before the company loses 100k thats not creative thats technical and therefore somehow lower class. You can use as much talent and inginuity as you want, but if its a real problem , with only one correct outcome/solution which is by definition a lot harder to achieve then thats just "techie stuff" ( and not worth as much wages as the manager gets - whose job was merely to tell you to do it)
Then some smackhead artist throws up on his duvet and sells it for 1/4 million
worlds remotest outcrop? its only 2 inches off scotland on that map.
I'm also deeply suspicious about Heathrow being "busiest airport in the world" and the channel being "busiest shipping lanes in the world" as I am continually hearing - jus seems to be something said amongst over prideful british folks. I bet you get different answers if you ask in other parts of the world
dubai and rotterdam surely?
