Calling it Windows Phone was a bit of a stretch, but at least the "phone" tells you what it is.

Windows RT? There is Windows NT, XP so RT has no built in meaning. They already have Windows XP Tablet Edition, and it runs Windows software.

Windows RT just sounds like another version of Windows to anyone who is not following tech press.

But it's not Windows, and will not run the Windows Software they expect to run on something called Windows.

I bought a Nexus 7, not an iPad. But MS is not trying to compete with Android, they are clearly going after Apple having copied the whole business model.

They are going after Apple, but why would anyone buy one over an Apple if they are going to spend that much?

It's not cheaper, so it has to be better.

Is it better? About the only thing I can see is the microSD card (depends how crippled it is) other then that it has nothing going for it. No apps, crap screen, no "cool", if you want a tablet with no apps, buy a playbook, it's way cheaper!

A friend who is IT for a school had a teacher who was moaning about them setting up Wifi in the school so he took a dead router and removed all the guts. Jammed a red LED in the power light hole with a resistor to the power brick so it would light up.

Stuck it up on the wall of the classroom with a cat 5 cable stuck through the hole in the back.

The teacher had new problems every day, and had some of the students blaming failed test marks on the wifi.

When shown that the router had no guts she quit and filed a complaint that she was being persecuted.

Yes, if the French laws are so great, and the content industry was missing out on tons of money do to downloading, they should be raking it in now. There should be a big bump in sales that can't be explained by any other change.

But is seems that nothing is happening. Other then someone raking in a lot of money to run the system.

There are lots of reasons someone might download, but not buy.

They might think it has a value of $.02 and would not buy if that was the only way to get it.

They might download something that they can't buy because it's not licensed for their region.

They might even buy stuff they downloaded and like, now they don't buy anything.

The idea that every download is a lost sale, and that stopping downloading will automatically give them that sale has been shown to be wrong over and over.

What you want to look at is Macrovision.

Free for the consumer (when they buy a DVD Player or VHS deck.

Free for the people making DVD players or VHS decks, but you MUST include it!

Create a DVD and use CSC you also get Macrovision, and you pay for it.

They could require all printers to have DRM no charge.

All files must have DRM.

You have to submit your file for approval and DRM, you pay. People print your file, you pay again.

So there will be no Free files to compete with people selling stuff.

Not long ago I make my self some pocket change by converting some files for a university professor.

He had 60 discs of documents that he could not access.

They were Apple II 5 1/4 discs mostly in Apple Writer and some AppleWorks files.

I happen to have a IIgs with a 5 1/4 and a 3.5 "super disk" that can write MSDOS 1.44 MB discs. All but two of the discs were readable.

He was going to buy an Apple II on ebay and print them all, and have someone retype them before he found me through a friend of a friend.

Then there was NASA when they found they didn't have a tape drive to read all their old mission data.

I don't think live tiles are going to do anything on the desktop.

MS killed off Windows 7 desktop widgets as not worth the effort of fixing, and there was active desktop before that. Maybe they can bring back clippy with a new name too, just get the same people who came up with the name for Metro / Modern UI / Widnows 8 App store app / what every they are calling it this week.
