Vote now for the WORST movie EVER

Kevin 6
Thumb Up

Re: Zoolander?

"Reminds me, how did any of the "Jackass" movies miss the cut?"

Or how not one single Michael Bay movie made the list astounds me. Every movie buff I've known rates Michael Bay's movies as the worst shit they have ever seen. I was shocked to not see the 2 hour long crappy teen romance mixed in with a car/soda/cell phone commercial wasn't on the list (aka Transformers). I've seen all the movies on the worst list, and thought Transformers easily trumped them (even santa clause vs the martians)

Dr Who scores new companion from Emmerdale

True

I thought (like quite a few others) smith would be crap due to how he looked like some emo kid who would stand around reading bad poetry, and slit his wrist from the pictures of him used when they made the announcement.

Blizzard ponders World of Warcraft for iPad

Kevin 6

Re: Two buttons?

As someone who has every class geared to high hell I won't argue with the Mage, and DK part but I'd say rogues a tad easier(well at least assassination rogue) than any paladin build.

As for huntard joke it wasn't due to hunters being easy to play. Actually being good as a hunter is not easy, and never was. It all originated in the fact 90% of hunters back in the older expansions would need roll on ANYTHING they could equip, and claim it had necessary stats for their class. Strength 2 handed sword they needed it, and would argue they needed it cause strength improved their physical DPS (even though they should NEVER have to do it), +healing cloth gear they needed it to improve their mend pet skill, cloth hell they could equip it so it must be for hunters.

I've seen the same thing done in other classes, and till DK's were added it was extremely heavy concentration of retardation in the hunter gene pool. After DK's came it seems they attracted a large pool of the retarded hunters which I'm guessing cause DK's can equip almost any item in game, which old school huntards loved to do.

Apple Store staff outnumber queues as new iPad goes on sale

Kevin 6

Re: Fanbois?

Nah doubt people learned "that queuing at midnight to buy the next, slightly updated version of what you already have is a complete mugs game."

I think its more along the lines of Steve Jobs being dead. Without anyone doing huge press reviews, while wearing a black turtle neck to look different, telling them it was the newest most revolutionary device ever made that would make their life complete they obviously didn't queue up.

Diablo III out on 15 May, pledges Blizzard

Kevin 6

Re: Blizzard used to be good

agree since activision got them they have really gone downhill.

Wow's content patches have dropped drastically in quality since. Hell the last "big" content patch added so much content it took me under 1 day to do almost all of it...

Also look at starcraft 2 they gave us one set of missions, where SC1 had all 3 races missions. SC2's Stalinistic control on what maps can be used in multiplayer drove me, and my friends away from playing it seeing I don't feel I should have to get blizzards permission on what I want to throw together to play on with my friends. I for one won't be spending any more money on SC2 when they release the "expansions"(aka what should have been in the original damn box).

Also that must be online for single player has royally pissed me off on several occasions like when my DSL router blew out on a thursday, and it took 5 days for its replacement to get here due to the weekend...

Re: Re: Kickstarter

"It could help fund a lot of scifi shows, as there is huge fan support for scifi, but little or no support from companies like Syfy."

Honestly I stopped watching SyFy when they became what seemed like the WWE/ghosthunter channel seeing every time I turned that crap station on its either Ghost hunters or WWE. Do miss the actual science fiction shows they used to air that were canceled for the 2 previously mentioned piles of festering crap.

Warp drives are PLANET KILLERS, Sydney Uni students find

So...

Gene Rodenberry had it right all those years ago?

If anyone has ever noticed in StarTrek they pretty much didn't exit(or enter unless an emergency) warp drive near a inhabited planet.

Maybe they should look closer at StarTrek for how to do it too.

Icon for what Gene Rodenberry really was.

IT staffers on ragged edge of burnout and cynicism

Kevin 6

Re: Re: IT security staff?

Pretty much every place I worked where I was under a ton of stress management was the sole issue. Trying to explain ANYTHING to them was like talking to a damn brick wall.

I've only had one good manager in the years I worked in IT, which I had to quit do to almost losing my damn mind dealing with numpty headed management. If he didn't understand an issue in 20 words or less he would give us the benefit of the doubt to do what we needed to get the job done. All he cared about was our ticket turnaround speed, and when there were no real issues he could care less what we did which usually was doing whacky things like experimenting with micro controllers, seeing what we could recycle broken parts into, or pulling pranks on each other.

His boss didn't like the lack of detailed paperwork we weren't submitting, and how we were sometimes goofing off so the head boss got rid of the best boss I've ever had, and replaced him with a person that's understanding of computers was limited to being able to turn them on, and they made working there a living hell (seriously 2 years I worked there we had 3 people quit total till new boss, after new boss we had a 95% turnover rate every 3-4 months)...

Sony to strike gold with PS Vita - if it cuts the price

Kevin 6

Re: Sony is a strong position, says Wu

Well I'm guessing the original PSP sold as well as it did cause it was easily hackable to play emulators and bootlegged games. At least every single person I knew that owned one had theirs hacked and used it to play downloaded games, and never once bought a PSP game for it kinda like what happened on the Dreamcast (I know that's a console system, but I knew tons of ppl that owned one and paid for maybe one game bootlegged the rest). Whereas that wasn't the case with the DS the same people owned the DS, and actually bought the games ;)

Ageing Mario blamed for Nintendo's woes

Kevin 6

Re: eeexcept

It's *also* worth noting that there's really no shortage of small downloadable games for either the Wii or the (3)DS).

this is true on the 3ds at least there is a section highlighting $2 and under games some look decent. Then there are also a lot of $7 and under games too.

Kevin 6

Re: Franchising is the death of creativity

One key difference franchised games(specially those with no real continuity like mario games) are still at least entertaining, and can show innovation.

Franchised movies are generally stuck in a universe, or are just completely rehashed re-imagines that are worst than the original.

Currently there are 2 games(on the 3ds) I want that just came out that 99% chance I'll get once they are back in stock(and both are from franchises that they are far up their in numbers). I wish I could say the same thing about wanting to see a hollywood movie that has been made in the past 6 years. Franchise or not the movies pretty much just suck that they been crapping out for a long time to the point looking at an actual turd in a toilet is more entertaining.

Kevin 6

@Greg J Preece

Well there are 2 other issues I can say from what I seen

1) Forcing people to use the motion controls. I didn't buy the newest zelda game(along with A LOT of other games) even though I really wanted it strictly due to the motion controls. Nintendo has to learn hard core gamers don't like moving especially when the games going to take well over 5-8 hours to beat. I've talked to other people about this, and they are in the same boat. Now motion control for the party games, and multiplayer stuff like wii bowling fine, if they want to include motion controls in hardcore games at least give the option to disable it.

2) Lack of good games outside japan. There were literally at least 10-15 games I would have bought in a heartbeat that never left japan(I know this isn't nintendos fault but their 3rd party programmers)on the Wii(there have also been so far 6 3ds games that will NEVER come over here that I want). One that really irks me was Tales of Graces which came out on the Wii in japan, but only on the PS3 over here...

IMO Mario, and their other franchise characters are the least of the issues, and generally the games featuring them I find to be the best generally on the systems.

Obama refuses to respond to MPAA bribery claim petition

Kevin 6

SURE DOES!

It means he's been a lying piece of shit the whole time like all the other Illinois politicians who normally end up incarcerated for bribery, extortion, or other illegal acts. I think Illinois state slogan that appears on our license plates(yes I live in the shit hole) should be changed from the "Land of Lincoln" to the "Land of Political Corruption"

America abandoning DSL in favour of faster cable

Kevin 6

I miss telocity they rocked. I turned their old SDSL modem into atom based PC :D

Back on subject their SDSL package rocked then they got sold to some place then sold to direct tv which then closed it down, and went megapath who was 2X more expensive for inferior service($99 a month 1.5DL 300k up, but hell AT&T at the time didn't offer service in my area). After megapath pissed me off the final time with their half assed service 3-4 years ago I went AT&T and and for $30 a month get 6 meg download, 200 up for $40 a month (been going up slowly from $33...). I will say I can't complain at all about downtime, seeing only time I couldn't connect was when a surge blew my DSL router out..

I think AT&T is increasing the DSL prices, and has the low data cap(royally has pissed me off) to force people to swap to u-verse, and that is pretty nutty priced unless you get their TV package too.

Students busted for hacking computers, changing grades

Kevin 6

School I worked at once 98% of the teachers had 12345 as their password till we forced them to change then they went 123456.... the principal had the never to be guessed 54321.... that account also had full access to the boards network...

Me and my boss quit due to the security nightmare that place was cause no one would listen to us... Our higher up even made us make the admin password abc123, on the server, and routers cause the ones we originally had (it was a randomly generated password) were too hard to type in(I kid you not that was the reasoning)

Go Daddy boycott threat for backing hated anti-piracy law

Kevin 6

Well non-us piracy sites should be happy in theory. if they submit themselves to be blocked then the majority of the idiot laden big companies when they do a google search it will turn up nothing where as the rest of the world, and smart people in the US that will swap to a EU DNS server will be free to browse, and pirate as much as they want off the sites.

Ahh ways to abuse this

Irony

"My wife runs a lab at our local university. The students they hire for part time lab work are the most ignorant, lazy bunch of people I've ever seen. She usually wants to fire their lazy ass after a few days."

When I worked at a university lab as a student it was the supervisors that were the most ignorant, lazy bunch of people I've ever seen. They would fire anyone that showed promise, dedication, and knowledge that might potentially catch a higher ups eye to secure their own jobs.

not all

I can say my house is made of brick, along with 90% of the buildings I've seen traveling through the city so its not all ;)

As others have said brick is nice vs high winds, and such but very BAD to earthquakes. Few years back we had a very minor earthquake (2nd I can remember in 30 years). It was so minor I mentioned that it felt like we had an earthquake, and generally they said I was nuts till they turned the news on a little later where it was said we had one....

Afterwards we found out the house had well over $8,000 in damage to the brick work from it shifting that wasn't covered by insurance cause it wasn't immediately noticed till we noticed leaks when it was raining.

Did a Seagate sales bloke just say 5TB drives are coming?

Kevin 6

Ahh the deathstars

Me, my cousin, and a guy I knew back then bought the 40 gig ones when they came out. We all got 2 each

My cousins majority of the sectors went bad within 1 year on one of this drives, other failed completely both were warrantied. The 2 replacements same stuff bad sectors popping up left and right after he lost some school work he flung em out.

Mine (I still use 1) the one had lost the majority of its space due to bad sectors, other (the one I still use) has a few bad sectors still. I've low level formatted them 8 times each cause that oddly repairs the bad sectors. The one last time I used the tool to repair them failed the repair(why its no longer used).

I was using the 2 drives for over 6 years in my network server which has only been down for mother board upgrades(2 times for 5 hours). I also have a WD drive, and segate drive running the same amount of time, and are used way more.

Other guy I knew with them ripped them out when he got his first few bad sectors, and sold them on ebay after running the drive repair program.

But agree on the rest I've seen various drives of all styles crap out or have issues. IBM's just had the highest rate I ever saw period with such a small sampling(100% out of 8 is pretty bad). Seagates I've got 3 in my current PC (2X1TB, and 1X2TB), and not had a single issue with them so I can't complain(now watch one die the second I hit submit).

Win 8 haters are just scared of change, say MS bosses

Kevin 6

"The personalization of the Start screen is one of the features that we want to make great," Dukhon wrote.

wonder if that means we can set it back to the classic start menu as used in 2000(and which XP, and vista had the option of), and the server editions which was lacking in 7 is my biggest gripe(but oddly was in the beta...).

Currently have 7 set as close as possible to look, and function like 2000 without installing those start menu replacements(which I find lacked the settings, and crashed a lot)

Not all change is bad but change just for the sake of change that doesn't improve a damn thing isn't good in my books.

Laptop shoots spike into owner's hand

Kevin 6

ditto on all.

cept I seen 2 shattered disk both were bootlegs on the cheapest CD-r's around

but still the drives had no damage done.

While people are right about the force of the CD's more than that of a paintball they are forgetting to take into account the mass, and air resistance.

I've blown CD-R's up hooking them up to lathes, and slowly spun them up till they exploded(did it after the 1st CDR I that self destructed in the drive that I fixed) just to see how fast the could spin before failure. I was hit with the shrapnel in my arm and didn't even get a scratch.

The only idea I can come up with on this one is that the magnets flew off the rotor, and hit a piece of metal (like maybe one of the lasers stabilizers), and potentially shot that through the plastic part.

Apple cofounder Steve Jobs is dead at 56

Kevin 6

@Craigness

agree

I've had a windows 2000 server PC's run literally 450 days non stop on the internet (as a web, FTP, and e-mail server) without a reboot or shutdown. Actually the only reason it did go down was we lost power for 2 days... Came right back up, and stayed on another 200 days till a drive failed. Al the while it was being hammered non-stop by people trying to brute force the FTP server. I've had the same experience with XP, and 7... (Will admit 95, and 98 had a nasty memory leak that took a few weeks of being left running non-stop to rear its ugly head...)

Only time I have EVER had stability issues was when a hardware company screwed up a driver(was a $5 fire wire card), running a poorly written program, or the computer had more viruses on it than a $10 crackhead hooker has STDs. I do not attribute any of those blue screens to Microsoft though. I'll be honest I think they do a damn good job at keeping as much backwards compatibility as they do

Mozilla to Firefox users: Ditch crashtastic McAfee plugin

Kevin 6

Beats me

My sister had 2 trojans on her PC that abused a rootkit, and she left FF 6.0 running for 4 months without closing it(most the time with youtube videos open), and the PC was still stable(well that was till the hard disk itself died, HEY it cleared up the trojan issue :D).

I'm guessing the people who have insane stability issues look at the pr0nz too much, or get the warez, and have multiple viral infections on the PC, and just blame FF.

I say its kinda like how people love to nag that windows 2000 was a buggy memory hog that couldn't run for 3 days... Both of which I have had run for over a year and a half without any shutdowns or reboots with no stability issues.

Now mcafee I will say has always as long as I remember it been a buggy memory hog. The majority of issues I've ever had with system stability was caused by that craptacular piece of work.

Super Mario jumps on domain squatter

Kevin 6

actually

They didn't bother until links were put up to copies of nintendo games.

It seems nintendo, unlike a lot of companies that will sick rabid lawyers randomly after anyone that uses something remotely similar to their IP, actually looks to see what is being offered, and monitors it. I'm guessing that as how it is seeing it seems they leave alone a pile of the pokemon(and other) sites that are purely fan based, which also don't do anything illegal.

Domino's to serve pizzas on the Moon, apparently

Kevin 6
FAIL

Duh

Its a franchise that is how most work. Goto a McDonalds, Burger king, Subway, or Wendy's the one down the block will sell the same things as the one you are at. That is how franchises work.

Most franchise owners will invalidate your franchise if you do not buy your ingredients from certain distributors, or make modifications to the recipes, and are caught. I know an owner that was booted out of a franchise for making changes to the menu.

As for Dominoes their pizza is alright for the cash only other place similarly priced place(which is also a franchise) is Little Ceaser's but IMO Dominoes blows them away.

Russian Progress space truck crashes in Siberia

Kevin 6

not really

Sure it might seem like it, but seeing NASA, and the others have sights set beyond the planet when would you want to learn your toilet/water recycler had design issues when in space, and broke down(or something equally needed)? when its in orbit close to the planet, and you can get parts to fix it easily, or halfway to mars or even on the moon?

It might not seem it but in all honesty its a giant experiment in itself, and a giant test bed for different technologies.

Hell look at apple, and Microsoft too.

So I guess go get in line for your new iphone 5, or is it 6 that does everything an iphone 1-4 does in a shinier case. Then in 4 months go trade it in for the new iPhone 5 color that is all the rage...

3DS owner BTW that has not had one issue with the 3D, I use it all the time in games, and not had one issue in any of the 8 3DS games I own.

.

And for the guy bitching about them selling N64 games on it. If you don't like them don't buy them Nintendos not holding a gun to your head saying you must purchase it. There are A LOT of people who have not owned them, no longer own them, or just want them portable so they can play it on the go. I didn't own OOT on the N64(I do own a N64 still just was too young for a job back then) so when it came out I picked it up, and I will be getting star fox on release too.

"following the release of the iPhone 4," said Graham Jones, general manager of PriceGrabber, which conducted the survey of 2,852 online consumers."

How many of those were apple related sites, or for people that done apple related purchases that the survey popped up for...

This survey kinda fails big time mainly due to its relatively small demographic. Lets face it most people wouldn't even bother with surveys unless its about a product they somewhat like. Honestly why not just stand outside a Apple store and ask this you would likely get the same skewed results

California set to impose 'Amazon Tax'

Kevin 6
Thumb Up

Re: But which rate of sales tax should Amazon collect?

Exactly the issue. I can actually walk 1000 feet down the block and be in a lower sales tax area where I live. Hell gas is 15 cents cheaper a gallon literally down the block. You can actually see the gas stations from each other due to the tax areas.

So people from other countries please understand the US's taxation laws (like many other that have been spewed out by politicians in the past 15 years) make absolutely no sense what so ever. Its not even a clear cut area that gets taxed its these jagged areas on the map that if it was a puzzle it would make a jigsaw enthusiast cringe.

The problem that will start to arise if states can get sales tax than what about the counties, and cities they will jump on the bandwagon cause we all know they are greedy bastards as well. Then try and keep track of all that BS seeing they love to change the tax rate quite a bit.

reminds me of the IT director at my 1st job when we had an e-mail virus doin rounds on the network

He sends out an E-mail stating DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENTS YOU ARE NOT EXPECTING

10 mins later he opens one(didn't read his own e-mail apparently), and re-infects the ENTIRE network(think 1000+ machines WE JUST finished cleaning)... Reason we knew it was him we traced the origination IP back to his machine, and when checking his machine we saw the E-mail... It read something like IMPOTANT TAX INFORMTION OPEN NOW (yes it was mis-spelled actually worst than what I put)...

Thing most apple loving reg readers should understand is the majority of computer users are complete twats that will ok the install of ANYTHING that looks even the slightest bit legit, which most reg readers even piss drunk would notice something was up, and deny the install.
