Microsoft's IE9 'nearly finished'

@allthedamnXPpeople

why the hell do people keep on moaning about it not working on XP , if you are too cheap to have vista / windows 7 then just switch to linux! what on earth is the point of complaining that a nearly 10 year old OS is not supported????

I hate spending money as much as anybody else but quickly realised when W7 was released that my computer and OS were both long overdue for an update so I did it at a total cost of about £300 including a cheap graphics card that worked fine for a year and has only just been replaced to give a little more grunt to gaming.

why bother commenting

you guys obviously hate anything from microsoft and from the sounds of it have not even looked at IE9 so why bother commenting, I know reg readership is 99% trolls but maybe you need a hobby other than MS bashing

I don't really use any add on's although there are some available for IE I just don't really need them,I have been using IE9 for a couple of months and it is actually pretty good although I agree that some of the layout changes are a little irritating and take some getting used to.

the comment about preparing the sites is probably more aimed at using the new functionality and improvements that have been introduced more that making the sites IE compliant , sites should work as they are but if site owners want to make their sites faster or that little bit fancier they can , this is nothing new and is just the same as when new versions of flash etc get released sites can stay as they are or update and get that little bit extra jazz

this of course assumes that no reason for the men to want to check men out or women to want to check women out #fail

who gives a frag, 3-4 sad bored people checking somebody out is hardly the end of the world, I mean come on people just because your doctor is a doctor does that mean that he wont enjoy himself sometimes , this kind of crap article just fuels those anoying dail mail / reg readers who like to foam at the mouth and get all excited when they talk about conspiracies or government invasion of privacy.

anybody whinging about this awful country , feel more than free to f£$% off

....if you can find somewhere better!

I am seriously sick of moaning whingers who want to support every oddball who just feels like being awkward, yeah so what he is a pnoid nut that just makes him even more dangerous than the rest of us, maybe he should have been given mental health quicker but I am sure that most of the details available deliberately chose to paint the police in the worst possible light that they can just for the sake of a 'good story'.

nothing on my pc is encrypted, why the hell should I care about people getting my junk and even if I was going to encrypt stuff why would I bother not handing the key over to the police, oh my god they my look at emails , shock horror

get a grip people , NOBODY frickin cares about who you are or what sad thing you are doing on your PC and the only even slighty good reason for encrypting your PC would be incase somebody steals it and even then I bet there are plenty of other paper documents that you keep in the house with equally personal information and even if not all it takes is one asre working for your bank , ISP etc who hands over your details for £3 .

Your data will never be 100% safe unless you live in a cave with no wires in or out and never hand over your details to any company / agency ever and I am sure this inconvenience would slightly outweigh miniscule chance of your data getting out there.

2 points about mac / linux users and not just 1

1, as said they have less market share

2, rarely said but very important - AT THE MOMENT most mac / linux people are more knowledgable and less likely to click things than windows users as they have to be to be or at least know somebody who is to change in the first place

I have always used windows and internet explorer and have used online banking from the start and have never been hacked , the only time I got even a minor virus issue was when I was being impatient trying to find something and downloaded from somewhere not very safe and I immediately realised and then wiped the computer to make sure that I felt safe.

Windows is not perfect but it is complicated and has a lot of legacy support so mistakes will happen and things will have to be patched, this patch tuesday is a good thing and not bad as at least it means that a whole load of issue have been patched.

stupid or silly users will always manage to find ways to cause problems or get themselves hacked

enough with the MS bashing on the register!

I code a little and with my admittedly fairly minor knowledge I think some comments are a little unfair, what sounds like a quite simple thing to fix can often have bizare and unexpected consequence and it can take some time to check that the fix is implemented correctly and will not affect anything else or any programs that rely on the current data handling

also surely most people on here are capable of understanding that if it was really that quick and simple MS would fix it as they are no more keen that the users are to see it stay unfixed as it does not exactly do any favoiurs for their reputation .

it also doesn't exactly help when users insist on buy their viagra from those nice friendly people who emailed them out of the blue...

WTF?

stop being stupid!

Microsoft = A Company = Requires Money to pay it's staff and shareholders !

Hopefully most of the people on here actually work for a living and don't just claim benefits, would you all sugest that people stop using whichever product of software your company makes and look for a cheaper or free alternative??. Also do any of you complain when you go into your local supermarket and you are bombarded by adverts that their products are cheaper and better than the competition?

Linux and open source has a place and is fine used by a percentage of people but if it were used by everybody there would be several issues not least of all that it would not exactly help the economy and many of the readers of the register were nobody to pay for any software ever and that hackers / malware writers would then be forced into finding ways to attack it more than at present

and as far as the comments for ubuntu = works , my PC works day in day out without any problems despite me regularly installing and removing software

re: file extension blx

I am getting really sick of this stupid file extension whinge, ffs if you understand pc's you know how to turn file extensions on and if you don't understand pc's even if you can see the file is called .doc.exe that will not stop you be stupid enough to click on it

also a huge percentage of problems with malware are caused by people quite wilfully installing software becuase it was cracked / free and letting people see file extensions will not stop this

as pointed out by everybody else Win+R brings up ruyn just file and although I agree it should have been left in it is not really a big problem

also personally I quite like the new taskbar and am not so blind that I cannot see the big square around programs that are running , if you want another window just hold down shift and then click on the icon.

human's are created to learn new stuff , get used to it and stop whining about minor petty changes

@Neill Mitchell

I think you will find that it is a running program that has the file open which makes it a bit awkward for windows to just decide to close the file as it could cause data corruption , also I never don't this issue with my USB sticks or any freezing problems with dvd's

I think the updates thing is a slight exageration , other that the definition for microsoft security essentials I have had 7 updates since 10/08 mostly driver updates and I none of them forced me to shutdown immediately or restarted without me accepting it

Network file copies and doing anything with a large number of file is a pain at present but the worse I could call that so far is a mild irritation of a few occasions

some users do have genuine issues caused by W7 issues but it gets really annoying when people complain about something as complex as windows beause THEY could not get it to run perfectly on THEIR macine setup and then they go on to dismiss the product completely because of that.

seriously people

this feature doesn't bother me in the slightest , I am using IE7 but it does the same thing and it saves me loads of time and works much better for me than creating loads of favourites links as all I need to do is type the first few letters of the address into the bar

About Time

I normally build my own pc's but any machines that I have seen very clearly prompt the user to creat a recovery disk and if they chose to skip past the message and not bother reading it is their mistake not the company that sold the computer , also most companies will provide an xp disc if they are contacted for a fairly low price or an XP disc can be borrowed from a friend as there is no problem doing this as long as people use their own valid license

no matter where people get a PC from if it has windows and the company is legit and reputable it WILL have an XP licence somewhere either stuck to the PC or with documentation

I am really please to see a few companies near me that have been caught by this as I hate it when people tell me that they get a WGA problem and I find that some useless PC shop has installed a dodgy copy of XP even though the OEM license key is stuck to the side of the machine and more often than not it is not even the correct version , ie they have installed media centre or professional when the license is for XP ome

and sorry AC but if people aren't capable to using the MS prompt to change the licence key then they should pass it to a more competent IT guy or read one of the many pages available from google - http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5034890.html

if the version is incorrect then it is unfortunate but in the same way a w98 key doesn't work for Vista it is just tough and maybe you should blame the installer of the pirate copy not MS

about time

I use ZA Security suite on two of my family pcs but it is just gotten far too bloaded and slow and for some reason crashes whenever I access amazon pages so for my Windows 7 machine I had settled for just K9 , Windows Live Family safety and AVG and so far it has worked brilliantly

the security companies are getting worried now and they have reason too, MS released a product with holes and they should be the ones removing malware that manages to get in through them , Windows 7 firewall and UAC combined with the free products will provide all the protection that people need on their PC and when people start to realise that the market for security products will shrink heavily or vanish

and just because i 'did' have something similar next to my pc when I started the post glug glug glug..

I have cleaned malware from plenty of pc's with Norton , Zonealarm and Mcafee installed and unless people are using XP or earlier there seems to be no point paying the £20-40 a year for them.

I have now installed Morro instead of AVG just to see how well it works and although the interface is very basic so far it has at least found all the eicar files and email atachments I tried and now it just remains to be seen if the sgnature database is big enough and updated often enough to find any real viruses , only problem is that my current products did not find anything in the last two years either so I might never know

also I think the mac users will find that there has been at least one recent story on the reg about a new MAC virus and I fully expect there to be plenty more as the platform becomes more widespread and the same inexperienced users start touse mac's and merily click away on popups and links

I Used to but PCW and PC Mart regulary when I was 13 :)

Damn, that that was a long while ago!

I have bought PCpro and a few others recently when they had a specific interesting article or a 3 issues for a £1 offer but the news is often long out of date and the features and articles see to skip through things too quickly, as other have said the stupid DVD is pretty useless although PC Pro does sometimes ocasionally have older but still useful full versions of programs.

still sad to see all this going as once gone it will be very hard for them to ever come back and every so often I get sick of staring at the screen and wish I had good magazine to sit down with and read and this is one less that will be available.

sorry but that is Bull in much the same way that all the single mums cannot afford healthy food because they spend all their damn cash on booze and cigarettes and takeaways

I know a few pensioners and they have plenty of money from their pension and most of the ones that have problems lend money to their waste of space kids who never pay it back

people will never have a great lifestyle on the pension but if they actually manage their money there is more than enough for them to live on and have a few luxuries
