Health secretary Matt Hancock assembles brains trust: OK, guys. Let's cure NHS IT

Create a marketplace...

Publish open free standards, requirements (like data storage location and big data analytics management) expectations etc...

Make some data sources publicly available (obviously not patient sensitive data), more along the lines of the bus tracking information, or police crime hotspot information, which allowed bored keen coders to knock together websites in a matter of days that out performed those paid through the nose for by the government.

Create an app store for health organisations to buy from (maybe link into apple/ google for some help with this bit and the code review/ reputation management aspects, which i imagine would be a massive factor in launching the system)

Sit back and watch as everyone from kiddie coders to multinationals compete to sell you their apps on a per user or whatever basis...

and then let the healthcare providers buy the ones that fit their requirements the best... it wouldn't work for all of the NHS IT problems, but it would for some, and would definitely shake things up at the top of the market...

Astroboffins spy the brightest quasar that lit the universe's dark ages

13 billion years for the light to reach us, 13.7 billion since the big bang, and 800 million since "particles started clumping together to form the first elements"...

If the light has been traveling 13 billion years, then the supermassive black hole and its burning accretion disc was around 0.7 billion years after the big bang... 100 million years before matter started clumping together...

Either someone's being mis-quoted, source data is wrong, my maths (most likely), or this was some sort of primordial black hole that was created during the big bang and this quasar pre-dates the formation of elements?

Second ammendment right...

Cryptography was on the united states munitions list as late as 1992, with all of the export restrictions that came along with it. United states citizens have "...the right to bear arms...". so I would have thought that American citizens have the right to any type of encryption they can afford?!

Paris because; once you've made a tool of yourself as publically as these two senators have, its difficult to be taken seriously...

Offensive Cyber Operations... I can't see an organization with that aim not wanting to have a zombie horde at their disposal... I wonder whether they'll develop their own or rent one, and once compromised whether they'll make use of their ownership of citizens PC for other ends... I suppose they could even push a voluntary program for "Patriotic" (misguided) people to donate CPU cycles to "the war on TERROR" (furthering American foreign policies) SETI style.

I'm all for renewables/energy saving and all that jazz but has anyone carried out an impact assessment on dumping a load of algae in the costal seas?

I hate to be a doomsayer but until we can get a hold on fusion were a bit stiched up, so we need to strike the right balance between investing in new available fuel sources to slow the de-stabilisation of our planets ecosystem, whilst proportionately investing in end-stage clean fuel tech (whether that be safe efficient disposal of fission-unlikely, or god-like sun wielding glory)
