Windows 7 - the Reg reader verdict

Quick Install? What about some software?

"I installed it in 20 minutes" is all we hear. NONSENSE! You might be able to load up this steaming pile in just 20 minutes on a quick machine (this quad core 8 Gb 3.2 GHz machine took almost 2 hours), but you won't have any software!

It's too expensive for a service pack (which is all it is), and it's so badly broken that it's just another typical MS waste of time. Time to first BSOD was 1 Hr 42 Mins - rebooting (sort of) recovered the open files, but then it promptly fell over again...http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/fail_32.png

No sign of an option to use another browser. Gets MUCH slower after the first few boots, and won't run much software (even MS products from just last year won't run properly).http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/thumb_down_32.png

Wiped the crap of the HDD after two wasted days with this pile, and installed a proper OS with some applications (latest Ubuntu).

Microsoft thinks it can sell one copy of Windows 7 for every four people

Are they mad?

There is not the slightest chance of sales anywhere near as big as they expect - "Ultimate" is already on the torrents! It's also too expensive, it doesn't work with a whole lot of hardware, there are already exploits to abuse it, and the first "7" malware is already out there.http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/fail_32.png

Once again it's the same old NT mess with a shiny new bit on top. UAC is just as annoying and just as ineffective, and it comes without any useful software - Outlook Express is a truly useless email client, and Internet Explorer is still broken.

Save your money for a newer computer, or have a holiday. Install the latest Ubuntu, and have a stable, secure machine with a wide selection of excellent software. http://www.theregister.co.uk/Design/graphics/icons/comment/linux_32.png

Why do people still buy this nonsense?

Why do people still waste money on AV? It has been shown that the vast majority of Windows malware is entirely missed by these nonsense products. The only REAL solutions are either NOT to "run" Windows, or to prevent promiscuous connection to the interweb.

have corporate users not yet realised that Windows is dead as a business tool?
