Euro Android devs: Google's hanging on to our pay

Carl Partridge
FAIL

How do you know?

How do you know this isn't a wide-scale problem?

For all we know, 50% of Google's European developers could be involved. That's precisely the point - because there is no method to count those affected, it could be 500 developers, it could be 50,000. My guess is that it's a pretty significant number.

Not scraping (but drowning) - London Bus Checker

Hullo

Great story - and three cheers to TfL for opening up the data, something a lot of publically funded companies would do well to imitate. They still seem to be taking the site/API down a lot for "maintenance" but it's so new that you'd expect teething problems.

Just to say that not all apps screen-scrape: for example, my iPhone app London Bus Checker (plug alert, currently #1 travel app in App Store) uses the same API as TfL's own mobile and web apps. In fact, it was El Reg's very own story on the bus countdown site that prompted me to write it in the first place! www.buschecker.com for those interested.

Secondly, for those apps that do screen scrape, is it really "not allowed"? I checked the TfL Terms and Conditions, and they specifically exclude certain areas of their website from screen scraping, but the bus arrivals site is not one of those areas. See http://www.tfl.gov.uk/termsandconditions/default.aspx

Air Video 2.4.6

Good, but can do more with other apps

I'm all for this 'anti-cloud' approach of streaming video from your own home - I mean you pay for your ISP connection, so you already own your own piece of the cloud!

But there are other options to Air Video. Orb works well, as mentioned by another poster, and can I mention my own (free) server called 'Remote Potato'. Does the same, but also streams all your music, pictures and video too, plus access to Windows Media Center scheduling, EPG, etc if you're running Windows 7. Cons: the server only works on PCs, but you can stream your content to any web browser on any OS, and there are clients available for Android, iOS and WIndows Phone too.

Re: house rules, I'm trying to avoid this being a shameless plug; there are indeed pros and cons to Remote Potato (and obviously I wrote it!) but I would recommend checking it out before you choose a streaming solution - many thousands already have.

WTF?

Superdad

"Tompert saw his kids fight over an iPod Touch. To show them it was just a silly

gadget, he smashed one up in front of them"

And he's proud of doing that? Sure, I understand kids should know there's more to life than staring at a screen, but it's not exactly a great message to be sending out about wasting the planet's resources.

O2 should be ashamed of this

This has all made me pretty furious, I can't believe the cheek of these pricing schemes, it's a clear abuse of a monopoly. O2 should be referred to the monopolies & mergers committee.

And to try and charge me for Internet tethering as an EXTRA?! I've ALREADY PAID for that 'unlimited' data! I already tether for free with an iPhone app (jailbroken) - and as I only really need to use this feature half a dozen times per year, there is absolutely no way on God's EARTH I'm going to pay £270 (£15x18months) for this 'privilege'! I mean, why would I?! The most frustrating thing is that, on the very rare occasions I need to tether my phone (e.g. on the train) it's incredibly useful to be able to do so, making this extra annoying if I upgrade to 3.0 and lose the tethering ability.

O2, you should be ASHAMED of yourselves.
