Cassini probe's death dive to send data at just 27 kilobits per second

Steve Netting

Re: "Space is nasty and sending data across 83 light-minutes of it isn't easy"

The data rate is dependent on bandwidth and Cassini TX power (so SNR at Earth) both of which are ultimately ruled by power budget. I would expect telemetry data rates to be consistent throughout the mission. https://descanso.jpl.nasa.gov/DPSummary/Descanso3--Cassini2.pdf suggests a mere 10W to cover 900 million miles. Current technology would offer little improvement in power efficiency or data rates.

Meh

G+

G+ is very busy from where I'm sitting. However I can practically guarantee none of the techy/photographer types I follow waste their time on these games. G+ is not Facebook.

Thumb Up

Finally - an upgrade path!

Finally I have an upgrade path from my old Dell D820 15" 1920x1200 (WUXGA) 16:10 display.

It seems all laptop manufacturers have recently switched to the cheaper mass-produced 16:9 TV 'HD' panels. For any developers, artists and musicians this loss of vertical resolution is a huge loss. Those saying ">1080 is pointless" have clearly been won over by the 'HD' marketing droids.

I've held off up(down?)grading for this very reason but my 2Ghz Core Duo is struggling under load. Dual booting this macbook pro for desktop apps (Linux) and Cubase (OSX) seems like the perfect solution.

Nokia accidentally unveils OS it should have had in 2009

Just what I was looking for...

...until Nokia killed Symbian. I now have an HTC running Android.

I'd have loved to have stuck with Nokia but what's the point in investing in a dead platform?

This version of Symbian looks fantastic though - the whole situation is very frustrating :(

100HZ?

What significance does 100 Hz have on a TV which doesn't use a CRT? Are they implying a) 10ms response time or b) DSP magic to create fake frames?
