German Pirate Party MP charged in child porn case

Tjalf Boris Prößdorf

Very strange indeed

So we have exactly one lawmaker from the two large parties who publicly admits to having understood the technology and philosophy of internet censorship - and that man collects smut on his phone, giving a reason that would be hilariously naive if we were talking about a traffic citation - but we are talking about a potentially ruined life. His potentially ruined life.

Apple blueprints warranty Big Brother

Jobs Halo

Apple Warranty.

From 1992 onwards I bougth sth. like half a dozen Apple Computers. Only one ever gave me hardware trouble. Apple replaced the motherboard free of charge three times, of which two times well outside the warranty. The 4th motherboard still does it's job eight years later, thank you very much. The thing was used in production until last fall.

Hardware reliability and customer friendly behaviour beyond what would be expected is my reason to buy apple computers - that and the experience (in the late eighties and early nineties, admitted) of having two PC-clones fail shortly after the warranty ended and getting not even sth. like "tough luck" from the vendor - one of them broke down literally on the day after the warranty expired.

So, if you don't like apple, don't by apple - but ask the man who owns one.

Oh, and a word to apple: don't seal your gear: back in the day a friend switched to apple after opening my performa 630 and seeing the diecast frame ...

Boffins: Ordinary lightbulbs can be made efficient, cheaply

Tjalf Boris Prößdorf

@jan & joe & others ...

I'm aware that heating by electricity is inefficient (why not outlaw electric heaters?).

However the "inefficiency" of a lightbulb is - at least in colder climes - not quite as horrid if taken as part of the system "heated living quarters" as it is when you look at it just by comparing input of electrical energy with output of visible light.

Let me guess: instead of those 98% of energy which go to waste as we are told to believe, the real number might be closer to 50% waste. That is obviously not true for streetlights, but then I haven't ever seen incandescent bulbs in streetlights ...

Inefficient?

This is ridiculous.

Yes, most of the energy is transformed into heat, not visible light.

How is that a serious problem in most of Europe and northern America, where we need to heat our living quarters most of the time anyway?

Maybe those light bulbs are not efficient if seen only by themselves, but if you look at the room they are lighting and heating at the same time, the efficiency problem pretty much vanishes.

Now, what else can we forbid next week?
