The economy: A big Arab did it and ran away, claims PM

UK oil consumers will have no effect on global oil prices

Does Gordon somehow believe that UK oil consumers will have any effect on global oil prices? The Global prices are the wholesale prices for crude unrefined oil. If he reduced the tax on fuel the oil companies wouldn't suddenly decide to raise prices to absorb his lost taxes, they are already making enough money to not bother!! UK oil consumption is a tiny fraction of the global market & hence profits.

BBC vs ISPs: Bandwidth row escalates as Tiscali wades in

tight wads, uk traffic is cheaper than intercontinental traffic

These ISP's are complaining about bandwidth that originates and is transported within the UK. Yes it eats into their contended services, yes it'll raise the number of support calls and complaints from end users because of the crap iplayer performance, but it won't eat into their expensive intercontinental connections like youtube et al do. The local exchange to the home has been consistently recognised as the place that needs improving to deliver a superior broadband but none of the ISP's (not even cable) want to put their hand in their pockets to sort it out.

Downloads are the future

i really don't understand why people are so download negative.

The internet became a massive success when people where using dial up.

Broadband spawned multimedia services such as youtube & itunes because end users now had sufficient bandwidth to view the content without waiting an eternity.

Just look at the huge me too investments by MS, Amazon & Walmart for online music and video sales/rentals for proof that the internet as a delivery medium is viable. You have to accept that services delivered over the internet will continue to evolve and meet or change peoples expectations of product/service delivery. in the days of dial up, downloading music from the internet was mainly for pirates and enthusiasts, in today's broadband era its now a multi billion dollar industry! Again pirates and enthusiasts are leading the way with downloading tv shows & movies in both standard and high definition formats, but now the likes of apple, MS and others are providing those services too. When they solve the complexity of showing that downloaded movie on the TV to be as simple and familiar as putting a disk/tape in the dvd/video player, the days of physical media will be over.

@Sarah Baucom

the reason for the poor fuel economy of modern cars is the added weight they all have to carry around & meeting modern standards.

I for one am grateful for seatbelts, crumple zones, multiple airbags, traction control, ABS braking, toughened glass, side impact protection, power steering, de humidifying air con etc

Governments have also legislated emissions standards which resulted in engine & exhaust management systems like MAF & Lambda sensors, fuel injection, Catalytic convertors etc

i also appreciate the other modern conveniences that make my car journey more comfortable. such as a stereo, power windows, remote central locking etc.

all these safety, legislative and comfort systems add weight and reduce fuel economy.

No responsible government would allow any car of the 80's to be sold as new now.

Skype goes out to mobile phones

I think you're missing the point....

i use those cheap rate numbers where you dial a lo-rate number then dial the number of the destination. I Just store it all in my phone as 1 long number with pauses between the lo-rate number and the number of the destination. Although i don't use up any of my inclusive minutes, its still cheaper than the skype charges!
