Argentina eyes up laser death cannon testbed warship

Tom Harvey

Re: It is surprising they have anything at all...

It is not similar.

There are growing protests about a missing activist Santiago Maldonado, but to say that there are disappearances and deaths on a daily basis is misleading. Police brutality is an issue in many countries and London has seen greater violence in Dalston following the deaths of young men at the hands of police than anything here. Going to a protest here is like going to the shops in the UK.

Not that the shops here are in anyway empty either. Inflation is well above any increase in income and many people are struggling with that, it's certainly not a situation similar to Venezuela.

I look out my window to see a peaceful, prosperous and pragmatic community of Argentinians. The Falklands war was run by a previous, hated Military government. Hatred for that government is far greater here than any hatred for the UK. My former neighbours in Scotland have more animosity towards Thatcher than my new neighbours in BsAs.

Sorry it's not inflammatory or entertaining.

Adobe bets on Flash 11 to fend off HTML5 invasion

Tom Harvey

While reports of death are exaggerated, it's nice to see that at least one of Adobe's products is facing something resembling competition these days. If it turns Flash into a better product then more power to them ... them, and all actually.

Ye, cos having the Number 2 smartphone handset makes things real hard compared with entering an established market, dominated by RIM and MS?!?

HTML 5 is quickly becoming as technically descriptive a term as "Web2.0" was from the start. This is just another example of the industry scrabbling to make a 3.0

Delivery for Mr Theo Ra!

So when producing and distributing this content will you be using the stack of software that is provided by MS, Adobe or Apple to do it; and so end up with their limitations or are you going to use that great OSS solution. Please do enlighten me if I am grossly underestimating what is out there, but....

FF, Opera and Chrome might be getting Ogg Theora playback out on the desktops, but what competes with FinalCut - Compressor - QTSS/DSS? Icecast?

And while we have the content provider's google on; if you *must* have DRM, are you using some Flex, or WM or ..............

This war is over, for now.

Virgin wi-fi rolls up two years late

Coverage

The east coast line operated by Virgin has woeful cellular coverage, I struggle to get more than 30min of access through my data card on a 5hour journey, so Virgin providing WiMax connections to an ADSL backbone is a much better (read as 'actually functional') solution.

But, through a T-Mobile hotspot!? I already pay for net access through a Virgin connection at home (will this get me virgin train access?) an O2 iPhone contract and a Three mobile broadband contract.

Guess I'll be sticking with the east coast line where I can share a connection through the train's free wi-fi or get decent 3G coverage through my data card.

Blunkett to press for cyberwar probe of BT's Chinese kit

Headline grabbing nonsense

Replace the foil hat with a bowler hat a minute and consider how much BT has invested in the Chinese market! If BT was to cancel contracts with Huawei, who do you really think is going to miss the business? Excluding Chinese operators from public contracts in the UK will start a business war with the biggest tech market on earth, and one that will cost BT, and Britain dearly. So, besides Huawei's apparent lowest cost provision it's also good old fashioned "I'll buy these off you if you buy these off me".

As for security concerns, you're gonna have to find a way to secure it without destabilising business relationships - perhaps through due diligence when rolling out national infrastructure instead of headline grabbing, Daily Fail reader friendly, xenophobic comments. It's probably Blunkett's idea of making a come-back.
