S60 is ok, maemo could be much better

I've been using an N78 for almost a year and can't complain, it does what I want (til now) in a phone, s60 shows its age but works great with the base software + a few 3rd party apps (handy shell, skyfire, fring, nokia email and putty mainly).

I also have an N800 that I love, even with all the restrictions it has. I admit the NITs are not very consumer friendly, but are open enough if you can take the time to set up scratchbox.

I have great hopes for the N900/rover, but as it's probably gonna be too expensive, I think I'll jump ship to android in the near future.

But, if maemo5 is solid enough for nokia to make it their smartphone OS, I could stay

Either way, I won't stop using my tablet, mer is looking good and could be great for the old tablets.

So, what should I get now?

My T61 is due for an upgrade, had a T20, T23, T30, T40 before and yes, the T61 sucks next to all of them. Almost sure I won't go with a T400, so, can you guys suggest what brand / line to switch to? I know I'm asking for a lot, but a workable trackpoint is a must.

if this brand spanking new technology worked as expected. In fact, it needs to go back to the initial vista mode and block pirate users from the OS.

In my country (Argentina) and as far as I know in most of the 'developing countries' the piracy rate is close to 90% on desktops, as most of this are white boxes. Obviously, as it adds value to the salesmen, running the latest vista ultimate, office professional and if you ask nicely, all the adobe programs you want.

Only the biggest companies threatened by the local BSA have licensed copies, and guess what? Many of them are moving to linux.

But Microsoft already knows this, that's why it's so easy to bypass WGA and you can find patched isos everywhere that don't even ask for a key on install.

If their anti piracy measures worked they would see an unstoppable decline in market share.

I hope they provide the source and would love to see this integrated with most emulators.

It should allow tweaking of the parameters and come with presets for different types of TVs.

Those kids that don't get of my lawn won't care much but I thank these guys (and emulator coders) for making my childhood dreams come true.

Dude, the 100 pounds of difference buys a lot of 1GB DIMMs to get it up to spec to the windows version. And for myth or xbmc, 1GB, ditching the window manager should be more than enough.

you can get great deals from tiger. I outfitted a whole network with 8 refurbed thinkcentres at less than 150 us$ each. I bought 2 more just for spares, this was almost 2 years ago and so far the spares are still boxed.

Now if you don't know enough you can get cheated into buying a pentium D (3.73GHz! fast!) and cry rivers when you finally realize what a piece of crap you got.

I had to add the xorg-crack-pushers (love the name) ppa on my laptop to get decent performance out of my onboard intel video, but as it was totally fscked on intrepid I'm really happy.

To the excited anon, give xbmc (xbmc.org) a try, in fact, everyone reading this, on windows, mac or linux should try it.

Camilla, you are missing the point completely, this is about offline, I'd like to see you 'app streaming' offline. If this is what I wanted I could do vnc, x forwarding, nx or even rdp for free.

Simon, not only is the world going mobile, it's also about to get away from wintel on the last front, the pc, first with netbooks / MIDs and then with everything else. The phone has already been lost by microsoft and unless fuel cells go commercial soon, intel's chance to get in the market looks pretty far away.

This is what the world needs, total freedom on both the back and frontends, with clear, open standards.

If you want to stick to wintel and limit your choices, (for a while) you will be free to do so, but in the end it won't keep making sense.

I for one welcome our new armlinux overlords.
