Samsung hauls Apple into court over emoticon patent :-(

salada2k

What's really happening

Do you really think these two companies dont 'like' each other? They both keep each other in business. The heads are currently sitting behind closed doors, clinking glassed of champagne, and congratulating themselves on how well this new marketing tactic is going. There's not a week that goes past when they are both not in the headlines. Is it actually 'damaging' to any of them? Of course not.

FAIL

That is just rubbish

You are kidding, right? Have you ever used an iPhone? I'm not here to bag Android (I quite like it) but I've been in IT for 12 years and I can remote manage Windows servers on my iPhone. That's just one example of what makes it a primary piece of technology. The hardware is superior to *anything else*, and the OS is on par with Android in most respects (I think iOS has some catching up to do) but iOS also doesnt suffer the horrible horrible bugs that Android does, AND there are A1 class apps available on the iphone, but you wouldn't know that since you don't use one. I just cant stand ignorant statements such as 'they are not a primary piece of technology'. 'They are a fashion accessory'. You are a fool intent on spreading your foolishness to others. Shame on you.

FAIL

That's a feature

I dont understand why you think that is a problem? It's transferring chat histories over to your copies that are 'out of date'. This feature has saved me many times, where I needed a link or a file, or needed to know part of a convo I had earlier on another machine.

As far as conspiracy theories go, all Skype chats are encrypted from end to end.

And, again, as far as wanting to know if other 'remote locations' are storing your chat history, surely you must have noticed that chat history is only transferred to PC2 when PC1 has your Skype still running and logged in, in other words, the only one storing your chat history is you.

iPhone 4: Perfect for everyone, except humans

Not all units

There's plenty of people reporting, and even some videos on youtube of units that don't have the problem? I don't claim to know whats going on I was just throwing some suggestions out there. It's pretty clear there is a major problem, I'm just confused as to why some people arent suffering from it.

salada2k

Software bug??

Just searching around and apparently Apple have stated that it's a software glitch. Check AppleInsider.com. Wish I had my own to test. Hurry up and start shipping to Aus, Apple!

salada2k
WTF?

More info required

It seems fairly unlikely Apple would have missed that, given all the R&D obviously poured into the phone over 18 months or whatever it was. Field testers tended (from what we know) to have had cases on their iphone 4's to disguise them as 3G's so people are insinuating that maybe just maybe they did miss it. Personally I dont think so. Others are saying they do not suffer this problem at all, no matter which way they hold it. Some also say that if you hold the phone to your ear naturally, then you dont touch 'the right bits' to cause signal degradation.

Obviously a case would prevent all of this. Then again, it's not too far fetched that some people, may be simply experiencing faulty hardware, perhaps there was a design glitch?

Here's another one: I remember hearing a year or two ago that there was a major conspiracy in the mobile business, whereby cellphone makers would basically 'rig the bars' to lie to you about what signal strength your phone is giving you. Point is lets not forget there is a direct correlation between hardware and software here. Maybe they software controlling it is too sensitive? OK you might say it went to 'Searching' and that presents a bit of a problem. And I'd most certainly agree that is a big worry. But the guy in the video didn't demonstrate a real life scenario, when you're on a call. But then of course how do you hold it when youre browsing the web via cellular? Probably like that guy just did. It's strange but the evidence is by no means compelling.... Why did the guy in the video not do a test while he was actually attempting to use the cellular network. That would have been more useful. Can someone try it whilst using a case? Every attempt at demonstrating this 'problem' has lacked a proper technical method of testing IMO. I still just cant buy that Apple would have not noticed this during R&D?

Apple's iOS 4 beams into unprepared world

salada2k

Ummm...

Everytime you plug in, your phone backs itself up. So do the update, and the simply click restore. Its that simple, and you could wake up in the morning with your phone exactly the way it was. Certainly worked for me, and has done since beta 1.

On another note, I'm looking forward to developers adding multi-task support to their apps. Get to it devs!!!!

New iPhone to land in US on 7 June

Hehe

Look, I did really want to know how you think Android leaves iphone in the dust, it's a shame you could not articulate that. Truth be told, I'll back whatever device I have, but I always try and make sure I have the best device going around at the time. Now one could argue the 3GS isn't the best device going around right now, but it IS nigh on a year old, so one would have to suspect it's been surpassed by something else now. And maybe, just maybe Android 2.2 running on a high end HTC might cut the mustard. BUT, the next iphone is just around the corner and noone not under an NDA can tell us exactly what's in store for us. I will argue the point about iphone multitasking though, there is quite an amount of info on that now, the SDK and OS 4.0 betas are out, Im using them, and the same information is out on Android. It's almost a certainty that Apple's implementation is better. Now, not to be a hypocrite, I will admit that iphone battery life under heavy usage is a day of usage at most. And that's not even 24 hours. But even Eric Schidt himself admits there are problems with Android battery life, but he blames 3rd party developers! LOL. Too much control to crappy coders. iphone doesn't really have thast problem persay, due to the locked down nature of the OS. And they couldn't afford to, with already sub-par battery life. My single biggest gripe with the iphone. Also, you are kind of right about the reflow, the double tap zoom doesn't exactly reflow text, but I dont agree with it cutting off text from articles as I have never seen that and use that feature daily.

Look, anyway, each to their own, its funny arguing about these things, and I personally like these kinds of conversations as for a lot of people reading them it serves as education, I learn stuff from reading crap like this all the time. And one other thing, there may be some now you see it now you dont software in the app store, but don't forget, dont ever forget, the iphone has a darkside, its called Jailbreaking, and it opens up a whole new world to the iphone, whilst devs are getting behind Android at a rapid rate, the dev base on iphone both on the light side and dark side simply dwarfs every other competitor.... And that's where the true power of the iphone lies. I dont think that will change anytime soon. :) Enjoy your froyo, but i hope iphone 4 can convince you to come back! :) And if it doesn't do it for me, hell, I'll join you.

You really haven't

much a clue, have you? I mean that has got to the worst Android sell I've read yet. Have you actually used an iphone before? Do you colleagues actually know how to use theirs?

May I ask you, how exactly is it that Android as of 2.2 leaves iPhone in the dust? Is that battery issue fixed yet? Or is it all those Flash sites you're visiting? And hey.... I guess while you're doing all these things on your Android phone simultaneously, you have it tethered to some kind of power source, right? I mean surely you're not *actually* mobile, or else your phone would be flat in a few hours.

The other thing you said, in regards to "I want my choice of apps to do all these things that I do frequently", and not be stuck using the manufacturers apps that support multi-tasking" or however you said it. Do you actually know how this thing works? The new iphone SDK for OS 4.0 allows every app to be updated using the new API's that Apple have provided for multitasking, and therefore there will be a plethora of choice for all iphone owners for all those app types you mentioned, and they will all support multi-tasking. Not only that, but Apple have implemented it much better than Android, and quite shortly the world will see that. We won't be rushing off for that power point as often as you will !

And for crying out loud Apple have had double tap zoom as well as pinch zoom for AGES. Sheesh!! Are you actually sure you've ever used an iPhone?!? I'm really starting to doubt you!

Basically everything you have said about the iPhone is wrong. Apple aren't playing catch up, they are playing chess. iPhone 4 with OS 4.0 will be the King, and once again, the handset to beat. I'm a phone mercenary, but I cant just sit back and let people like you fill other people up full of so much rubbish. And on a personal note, I've used Android, and meh. Maybe one day, but not yet. I will most definitely be purchasing the next iphone however, and that is something Im excited about.

Software has long been around that is capable of scanning a digital image, and looking for 'things of interest', so why is this job performed by humans? I think it's safe to say that's the main issue anyone has with these scanners, the people operating them are just glorified perverts. Remove the human factor.

Im not sure TomTom has anything to worry about..

For years, I've used TomTom on Windows Mobile devices, the primary reason why I owned a Windows Mobile device (say as opposed to a Nokia). I switched to iphone and lamented over not being able to run TomTom. But then finally, they released it after much (too much) anticipation and wait, and I can tell you, I'll never use Google Maps or anything else ever again. The TomTom for iphone now at v1.3 is finally quite polished, with spoken street names, and really works an absolute treat. And even with the iphone GPS, it is dead accurate, they have done some really good stuff under the hood and I find that at least 95% of the time, it pinpoints me exactly.

And not that I need to, but you can also purchase the additional dock, that has a SiRF chip in it, to augment the GPS in the iphone and make it super super accurate and sensitive. I'm just waiting for the price of the dock to come down a little.

All in all it's a fanstastic GPS solution which was $99 very well spent!

Google mocks Steve Jobs with Chrome-Flash merger

salada2k
FAIL

Why the fuss

Jobs was right, Flash is a bug ridden plug-in. Good for some things, totally overused in others. Gets crashy. In EVERY browser. After years, still the same unfixed piece of crap. Good on Jobs for [putting his foot down and backing something that could potentially be better, or at least compete with Flash so that Adobe may finally fix it. Boo to Google for making a move that is clearly there to annoy Jobs rather than be any benefit to the net community at large. Childish games. Losing so much respect for Google these days.

'We are humbled by the growth of the News Feed' What a joke. No one ever wanted it at all. No one I know and I mean no one was ever happy with the 'News Feed'. Now it's forced on us with no way to change it back. Oh, but they are 'humbled' that we are all so actively using it. What a joke.

iPhone finally gets Skype

salada2k

Not THAT bad...

The client is a little bit crashy, for sure. But i i didnt have the scrolling issues mentioned. Apart from that it does what it says on the tin. It wouldnt be the first v1.0 of an iphone app that was plagued with issues, issues that usually get fixed rather quickly once the feedback gets back to them. It looks nice and it's free and it will certianly be my client of choice when they fix it. For those that simply can't put up with that/like to whinge/bitch/moan then try Nimbuzz in the meantime which is ok too.
