Re: I would miss BBC HD

All those BBC4 documentries would be missed.

Most of my record list is of documentries on BBC HD.

I never check BBC Knowleage 4 or BBC Choice stupid purple logo 3 since we went HD

Someone tried to con me and I drive a Vauxhall

Parked up in a gate to a field, no money tried to sell a ring, we drove off and reported, Police turned up about 6 hours later!

Flaws.

1) Known con

2) Why did their mate drive off leaving them?

I had to stop as he waved me down from middle of road.

Sony and digital photography

This is an area I am unsure of.

I KNOW their sensors are good, but they are not really a photo company, I know their video cameras are good, but this looks like they are fighting the market against Nikon/Canon.

I am not knocking any companies here, but this isn't one of Sonys traditional markets.

So can I be enlightened please?

Re: 50Hz is good

Matches everything else UK

Had issues using some 60Hz footage in my last holiday video (forgot my video camera that day) so used my phone.

I would have loved 50Hz, resolution was not as bad as the jerkiness of the conversion

I did

Speed limits

I have been caught out on this first time I went to Ireland.

Off the ferry saw the 100 speed limit, bit fed up because I couldn't get over 90mph due to traffic, said to the customer their limits are high - they said they are in km/h.

As to litres per 100km bog off, km per l will do if we change, and I prefer Renaults idea of 3l to Audis.

Re: Speed != bad driving - Steve Evans

As someone once said to me they would rather be hit by a car travelling at 25 (speedo watcher) than missed by a car at 35 (watching road),

He was insistant in this and did not understand that people need to look out of the big window in front of them and that what was happening out there was more important than what an instrument said.

Re: @annodomini2 Before anyone says "here comes big brother"...

At one point on my commute I turn right from the stem of a T junction. There is a lot of traffic doing the same as me, about 4 times as much as is coming along the "main" straight-through road. Although it is all in a 30 mph limit, the main road traffic is doing 40-45 mph. As a result, this light sprinkling of traffic on the "main" road holds back the much larger amount of traffic trying to pull out because much more space must be left in front of a faster vehicle.

Funny really but if I saw a queue like that I would slow and let a few do their turn

Re: Chipping

Actually this is on the books but they have a serious problem.

How can they tell if it is chipped or not?

Flashed ECUs look the same, cars can have lots of different firmwares for the same car.

Basically it is completely inpracticle

Re: Load of money making s#¡t!

"it is annoying that someone drives 5k below the limit yet, will speed up to prevent you from overtaking."

Not sure what value that is but people who speed up during an overtake are very annoying. I had a small Toyota Lexus (rebadged Altezza) try this to me once, luckily I had about 50bhp more.

Re: JetSetJim

Inaccurate speedos, what what is the point in having them if they are not accurate?

Real hate of mine, I know mine is wrong, but no easy way to fix it, so I tend to ignore it.

MJI Silver badge

Re: Before anyone says "here comes big brother"...

"Plus, there's no reason why cars can't safely tail off the gas themselves when the driver pushes beyond the limit to stop them speeding."

In the middle of an overtake, would be the best place to do this

We were OK with

Banner ads non animated

Side ads - if not large

Small ads within an article

IF relevant to the article

------------------------------------------------------------

How they killed it

Animated adverts

Popups

Hover overs

Tracking users when not even clcking on the ad.

------------------------------------------------------------

The upshot is that sites which obey the top rules lose income due the the idiots, a few sites now restrict the activity of users who block ads, (part of site rules and very clear about it) but the ads are VERY relevant and unobtrusive, and get enough trafic to pay for that site and its admin team.

The idea that the ad agency is tracking my web history and recommending based on that fills me with horror.

Where is a lamp post when you need it?

A few weeks ago on a Sunday, saw a woman reading a book, holding an umbrella, (raining), walking along a pavement.

Why were the nearest lamp posts so far away?

It would have been funny!

There are plans to make a film based on the Uncharted games.

Re: ATRAC

Hmm downmarked for dissing SonicStage.

I actually LIKE ATRAC but not the software

MJI Silver badge

ATRAC

The reason they used this is very simple.

It is the Minidisc compression algorithm, it is efficient, it works, but as you found the software is not good.

As to other standards - we all remember the losers, the memory sticks are no better and no worse than SD, just a different format.

Media - well I haven't bought any of their music recently not sure on films as I do not buy that many now.

However last year we bought 3 Sony exclusive games more or less day of release, I think this more likely to make money than yet another identikit talent show singer.

However games is one media tied closely to hardware.

As to hardware purchases - check lists more important than brands

MJI Silver badge

Re: asdf

Actually I think that MOST of Sonys issues are due to the music studios and film studios management.

They are at odds with the Japanese side of technical excellence.

And we can lay the blame at all the people who bought VHS!

Why?

Because Sony only bought into media to make sure they could support a new format rather than have it wiped out. So if Beta had survived they would not have bought Root Kit music (part of same group as a movie studio)

Re: why the hate? TVs

Actually there is/was a pattern.

One shot had 4 Sony LCDs next to each other, 2 crap 2 good.

Different prices, people bought the craps ones for the badge and the expensive ones for the picture.

S series was pretty basic & crap, W series was very good, one was cheap one was good value and they were not the same TV.

Wega TVs were awsome, untill they dropped the prices too much. I paid 1200 for a 32" 50Hz TV - outstanding picture on it, later ones - quality poorer.

CD players - my car changer is old and OK. My home player is a Pioneer DVD player - now that was an excellent and good value piece of kit.

MJI Silver badge

After sales - variable

Good - full service and new CCD sensor

Bad - lack of interest in YLOD

My last camera was in the bad CCD period, but deck was playing up, sent it to Sony and it came back working

40GB PS3 YLODed, Sony offered a S/H repaired one for a reasonable (to them price) in exchange, but would NOT transfer data so would mean losing ALL of our saves and DLC.

Got it repaired for less than half the cost but that didn't last so DIYed it and transfered to a newer one a 320GB Slim.

Yes I could have gone elsewhere but it was at the period of RROD, (same problem) and what else would have played Uncharted 2?

Thinking about it the 40GB PS3 is OUR least reliable - 2 YLODs, Wii never broken down (never used), PS2 has had a Laser, Dreamcast laser is gone, most reliable and used is a PSP, the DSs are both getting ratty.

MJI Silver badge

I know what you mean.

Where is the QS range on audio & home cinema gear?

Where is the better than average middle price stuff?

I tend to like Sony stuff but I am unimpressed with their recent consumer products.

Go to a Sony Centre and have a look around, apart from the TVs not much else there worth buying, the Home Cinema kit is no longer syaing buy me - hifi now just seems to be docks for other brands of MP3 players.

I will say that I bought a video camera 2 years ago and Sony won that sale fair and square against - well I couldn't find much else apart from them as I wanted HDV - hidef Mini DV tapes.

So what do they need to do?

Make their kit aspirational again, make it the best in its market, it is only a couple of years ago when this was sayable with their top end LCD TVs, they used to sell loads of mid range home cinema kit, now it is cheap and flimsy or very expensive.

Their digital stills camera have a lack of image and brand, at their level the market name belongs to Nikon or Canon. Digital video market appears to have collapsed, but their semi pro kit is nice.

Bullies are not always tough and cyber bullies do not know who they are picking on. So they pick on a range of people including IT experts and well mannered tough nuts and it is likely IT people will pass on the information to the tough nut.

I think it was the that the troll concerned actually finished his picking on people for good. Because unbelievably he had managed to find a woman and she was told in no uncertain terms what he had done.
