Microsoft offers IE 11 preview for Windows 7 ... but not Windows 8

Well, it is a developer preview, not the final product.

No, it wasn't confirmed by Microsoft. It was completely rubbished by Microsoft (http://winsupersite.com/xbox/xbox-one-preview-what-really-happened-family-sharing). The "generally thought" bit was a load of crappy tech sites regurgitating the rubbish that was pasted on Pastebin - hardly a bastion of truth.

Win 8 man Sinofsky's 'retirement' deal: $14m shares, oath of silence

Test Man

There has to be something really shady to have happened to have Sinofsky get pushed out and subsequently put under a ton of NDAs in return for having his stock bought up. Shady as in operational reasons. Obviously there's been massive speculation regarding Windows 8's direction and (lack of?) sales which may have done it but that can't be all.

The future of cinema and TV: It’s game over for the hi-res hype

Test Man

The thing is, technically of course upping the frame rate would make the picture much much better in comparison to upping the pixel count, but would the masses accept it?

We've already seen things where technically the better solution is generally rejected, even as recent as the Xbox One digital sharing feature that, amongst others, was dropped. There's also some detractors that don't like the look of the 48fps The Hobbit film.

So I'm not sure if people are ready to accept a 120fps UHDTV film, for example. Still, it might make live broadcasts look much more vivid. And maybe might make those silly 100Hz interpolate feature that are on some current HDTVs obsolete (hate them - picture always looks naff and it ruins "the feel" of footage that is filmed on film).

But yes, I also have a 2nd gen iPod Touch, one that hasn't seen updates in months because clearly the new baseline version number standard for apps is either 4.3.x or 5.x. Gutting.

Friend got Transformers 3 on Blu-ray. with a Ultraviolet copy that you download through iTunes.

After what seemed like an awful faff, we managed to get it to download to iTunes and then transferred onto his iPad.

Disconnected then connected again and it synced, deleting the freshly-transferred film with it.

Tried to download again - would not let us do it.

I still shudder at v1.x of the app - the craptastic Adobe AIR version. It was AWFUL, with lots of non-standard buttons and features, including (for the first few builds anyway) the inability to actually exit the app via an on-screen button, menu item or the back button.

STV Player

If by some miracle there are people who want to view ITV's programmes on a device that isn't a Samsung one, STV did release a player recently (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tv.stv.android.player).

Just use a Scottish postcode (like the postcode of Ibrox Stadium - that one works ;) ).

Voila! No real need for the rubbish ITV Player as most of the same programmes are also available on this not-as-restricted-as-ITV-Player app.

Test Man

Re: Spoilt for choice...

Not strictly a new app, as this 2.0 version was released when the branding changes were implemented months ago.

If by some miracle you still have the 1.x version that needed Adobe AIR, it will still work (poorly).

Test Man

This is weird. The new ITV Player app (that has the new branding and is specifically for Samsung devices only) has been available for months already. So God knows why Samsung has only put out a PR statement now.

Londoners in mass test of telly tech savvy as 4G filters mailed out

Test Man

Not understanding this.

London doesn't use any UHF channel in the high 60s any more? It's the high 60s that are near or at 800MHz, yes? So 4G signals at 800MHz aren't likely to interfere with any Freeview signal?

Although I do recall someone in the comments section on a Freeview article in The Register suggested that it would still interfere if people were using a wideband aerial that is designed to accept signals from the full UHF range.

Considering the entire "always on" thing is a massive rumour, for all we know Microsoft were NEVER considering it. BSkyB punters drown in MASSIVE MYSTERY Yahoo! mail! migration!

Test Man

Re: migrating or copying emails?

Your paranoia has caused you to not understand what is happening. If you use POP with the "leave deleted mail on server", then when mail is moved to servers, as far as the client is concerned they are fresh new e-mails so it's redownloaded them.

Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons why POP isn't fit for purpose.

Test Man

Re: RTFM

Bob. Hitchen

Again, like the OP said, it's down to the fact that people were using POP with the "leave deleted e-mails on server" option set - when the server changed, as far as the client is concerned the e-mails are fresh new ones so it's redownloaded them all.

This is yet another reason why POP should never be used.

Re: Good customer or Bad its irrelevant

Exactly

Test Man

That is missing the point - they didn't advertise that they could pick up devices from that particular area before 3pm next day, they advertised to everyone in the UK that they could do it. They failed to prove that they could pick it up from anywhere by next day 3pm, just that they did in one area, hence banned.

Test Man
Stop

I think it's not really a case of a single complaint that the ASA have used to discredit the ad, the single complaint was used to bring the ad to their attention, then the ASA investigated it and determined that PC World had not proved it.

It could have been thousands of complaints or none, it doesn't matter, the point being that once ASA were aware of the ad, the onus is on PC World to substantiate the claim the ad was making. They failed (proving that they could have picked up this customer's kit before next day 3pm was missing the point - they had to prove that they in general could pick up ANY customer's kit as the ad was aimed at everyone in the UK), hence it was banned.

So in other words, it doesn't matter if there were complaints or not, if the ad is misleading, it's misleading.
