Hopefully, IE9 will be the last IE we ever see. If they don't get it right this time, everyone will switch to anything else.

It now takes more dodgy javascript to cater to the different IE versions than to cater for all of the other browsers combined.

I'll believe the "Open Standards" hype when I see it. Even then they'll have to improved speed, security and functionality to at least equal the other browsers out there.

You just need to add "-site:fox.com -site:americanidol.com ... <etc>" at the end of every google search query. The list of sites could be pulled from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assets_owned_by_News_Corporation with a quick scrape for URLs and then, Hey Presto! No more Murdoch!

I'm actually thinking of doing it just to eliminate the amount of garbage i see on the net from murdoch and co.

To all who are claiming M$ shouldn't adopt HTML5 because it hasn't been ratified as a standard should remember that EVERYONE ELSE has agreed that it will be the standard (except for crApple who don't like the Theora video format and want to use their own... sound similar?)

I was writing web sites in HTML 4 before it was ratified and I'm really glad I did.

IE is slowly losing market share. It'll take a while but eventually all the dumb-asses out there will come across a good Samaritan who'll point them in the direction of ANYTHING ELSE!

As much as I also disagree with Google's dominance of search and information collection, I think this author should not try to comment on it while he's associated with milo.com .

milo.com is driven by Google maps, has no geo-location to speak of and seems to be, stylisticly, something straight from the Redmond camp. All in all, except for the Google bit, very badly written.

Please, as one commenter has already said, don't call the kettle black until you're all nice and shiny...

Really, Journalistic integrity has a lot to do with confirming any source that isn't primary. I see the same problem here as when the NY Times (for example) rip a story near verbatim from an indian (for example) newspaper.

The worst bit is that many "reputable" news agencies don't even credit a lot of the stories they rip from "lesser known" news agencies. This can be seen on an almost daily basis by tracing news stories through Google news.

Many journalists today are forgetting that primary sources are the really the only ones worth researching. If you're getting your info from secondary sources, you're using the work done by someone else and you thn need to check all of their "facts" as well as your own.

Tombstone: 'Cause El Reg woudn't know a primary source if it crawled down the interweb and bit them on the NIC ;-)

Once again, VPNs will kill the clean-feed idea.

Businesses in australia already have VPN links to other countries. If the gov tried to control all encryption keys, the business back-lash would be huge. All of a sudden "For the kids" will be combated by "That's our intellectual property, senator. Go away."

All it'll do is take away any incentive for certain companies to do web-caching, provide add-on services etc. The ISPs in australia will go back to providing nothing but a link to the net, at a much lower percieved speed than before.

Net speeds will suffer anyway. The question is if deep packet inspection is slower than VPN traffic to another country.

All in all, the "clean feed" proposal is one that has been put forward by people who don't understand the tech of the net. Not only are the moral reasons for doing this very dubious, the actual practicality of the idea is non-existant.

RedHat already have a virt suite in dev. Check out ovirt.org. I would guess that this is the development bed for all virt related progress in RedHat EL.

It's only at 0.96 at the moment and much of the architecture is still being finalised but it works bloody well and looks to be a Xen killer. VMWare may still beat them with ESX 4 (or whatever it ends up being called) in ease of use (and some funky new direct i/o stuff), but they still can't beat the price of ovirt ;-)

Mac users are like the religious people of the world. PC users are like the atheists.

Mac users get riled up when anyone attacks their precious brand belief.

PC users have NO brand beliefs (if they do, they also apply to Mac hardware. NVIDIA vs ATI, Intel vs AMD etc.) and as such can't really be insulted.

An atheist can offend the religious with their very existence. The religious are nothing but an illogical phenomenon to atheists and not really worth getting riled up over. Until they start killing people in the name of "Love".

In the same way, generic PC users can offend the Mac people of the world, but Mac users are just an illogical phenomenon to the generic PC users of the world.
