Surprisingly I find it's easier to move my clients to Ubuntu as most like me around elderly. And only use computer for email and talking to family. I switched to Linux just before my 70th birthday I'm now making a CD up that will install Ubuntu already configured with the software they use with a windows like desktop and all needed icons where they can find them. I accidentally tested on an old lady who complements me on fixing her windows so it didn't play up then she saw her laptop in my hand. And told me to make hers like mine so I did. Now I'm reading documents learning terminal and other handy tips. So I'm proof You can teach an old dog new tricks. But the Dog must want to learn.

Microsoft breaks Microsoft account sign-ins in Windows 11 with latest update
Re: Can Microsoft just leave account signins broken?
And that boys n girls is Linux to a tee. plenty of potential options and yes even fun in just choosing what distro to use without having to install each one I load what I want to look at into ventoy and boot up and test within having to install anything. Try that with windows. It doesn't do live CD
Re: Can Microsoft just leave account signins broken?
Are you sure you are talking about Ubuntu? Sounds more like you have described winslop to a tee and mistakenly named it Ubuntu. Anyway as far as I can see if Ubuntu is what you described and it hasn't given me an error in 9 months of use. I'll take it. Now window blue screen of death was a common occurrence. To say nothing of the excellent update process in Ubuntu is night n day compared to windows.
I'm sure tho' miccyslop would give you a job as a propaganda writer for windows 12 they're gonna need them.
Re: Can Microsoft just leave account signins broken?
I picked the exact same way of repairing winslop installed Ubuntu and I wonder why I didn't do it earlier. Now I own my computer again I get daily updates and I still have not had to do the dreaded winblows reboot. I also saw a preview of window 12 that was the day I switched. Win12 is an AI powered wallet drainer.
Latest Windows 11 insider builds hide secret File Explorer dark mode
Re: Boring
Now that is an idea. I still have the original disks they used to give you with your new PC. My only problem is... Where did I put the external DVD player.
But I'll grab images of them I have from memory The encyclopedias music flight. Plus magazine CDs and the Apps that now days the companies are more known for bloatware. I have the excellent Norton's Suite of useful tools CDs with things like Ghost.
Oh and as a bonus I still have a box full of Umm err cd back ups. And the PCs to run them on. At 70 years old I think I may have to have a down size my collection of old PCs and parts from the days when you had to use external software from a CD. So you could then configure the cards like sound and video to be able to use them. Oh and the myriad of Network parties where you usually spent an hour getting the computer to talk to the network. Hell even the humble rodent needed software.
Then you had to write the batch files to just get the computer to start
These days I buy a new Ryzen and mobo ram plug it In and 5 minutes to get it all running and installing drivers automatically. All the good old days. Sorry rambling.

Disenchanted Windows user? Pop open a fresh can of Linux Lite
Oh PLEASE. Not another Version of Linux.
For people who use windows. And who are thinking of making the jump to Linux. How the hell. Are we supposed to work out which one of the myriad of Distros, that are released every month to select. They all have different names. And varieties. And uses. And people say its hard choosing from half a dozen versions of windows. How many different versions of Linux are there to choose from?
Updates are plenty but fans are few in Windows 11 land
I have machines from win 95 to win 11 But for some reason my FX and Phenoms have a live affair with Win 7 let onto the net once to update all drivers. then network sockets disabled in Bios I have a usb thumb drive internet connection that works on win7 without hunting for drivers and All these are now free to sit on my game network (seperate no internet) and No virus scanners. etc they run fine (better without all the network stuff calling home all the time. and we can still play network games and play all those games gotten in my naughty days 20 years ago.
Im running the windows 11 in the beta insider channel One of the forst things i dod was to completely stip Edge and by rite fkn BING and that goddam AI what they call copilot popping up everytime you hover over its icon in edge. Personally i wouldn't trust AI and in particular M$ and the alphabet AI to run a dig pound feeding program. So it looks like my next upgrade will be to Win10 and Linux in a dual boot config on my 5600x system Win 11 is more and more changing to some AI run monster. give it Time its already proven to be untrustworthy and even psychopathic at times yes great lets install it on everything fkn Morons.

Yes same here
Anyway with people being forced to stay home and work if possible it would almost be price gouging by Mi$$yshaft It's not like its our idea to stay home and work. Now the schools are closed so now thats going to make more people expected to work from home Mi$$yshaft are just going to have to wear it.

Microsoft deletes deleterious file deletion bug from Windows 10 October 2018 Update
This isn't the first time they have screwed with the /docs etc etc . A couple of updates ago I had a spate of calls from people who had lost their whole home directories and I lost mine too. It was easily found microosoft had just decided to rename all the bloody computers to \desktop\abcd1213 but it was the time taken to fix microsofts screwups. That they don't pay you for. And this time they the Docs/pictures are gone for good. Not good for some of my elderly customers who lost some pictures and Docs that are irreplaceable. And when you say Backup they think you mean reverse the bloody Car. Microsoft have got to watch what they are doing. Because a simple date error causes so much pain and distress.

Win 8 more like Pig ver 3
Having tried this crap win 8, 32 and 64 bit versions, the 32 bit blue screened instantly, and the 64 bit ver hangs whilst it does something or other but cpu usage peaks at 99% on both cores and temps are close to burning hot. This on a machine that happily runs win 7 both 64 and 32 bit. So yep it's time for a dogs vomit and Ballmer and co obliged.

That sets us 'oldies' apart from the disposal generation All my 10 year old tv's have a computer (P4) hooked up to them all networked with terabyte drives all over works great. And I cant afford to buy new stuff. But i did put it out that I was interested in any broken Laptops from friends and out of all I have collected, I now have 3 working ones. so there are ways around getting newer tech. and if you need to find out how to take it to bits and you are fine with handling fragile and breakable equiptment then it's fun, and you also learn something.
win 7
Well I had an old Dell 3 gig Hyper threading cpu (socket 478) with a gig of ddr 400 ram and a ATI 9800 AIW pro 128 meg video card give me a windows 7 rating of 3.2, and ran smoother than XP which just seemed to hesitate and it's I now have a dual core cpu Laptop running 7 and it's way smoother than XP The best thing they built into Win 7 was the ability to handle multi core chips. ANd I to have a shed full of 'old' computers mainly P4's and Athalon 's and X2's so may have to buy a coupla dozen beers, and have a sort out and see what sort of a frankenstien I can build.

Lawyers fear Assange faces death penalty in US
Hmmm
There you go the US we'll get him sooner or later
Federal Criminal Lawyer, Douglas C. McNabb, points out that a U.S. extradition law between Sweden and the U.S., pursuant to the article 6 of the supplement to the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Sweden, can assure Assange's extradition to the U.S.
Sweden can transfer Assange to the U.S. to stand trail for any U.S. federal criminal charges before he faces charges for sexual offences in Sweden. If convicted, Assange could also serve his full sentence in the US, before ever facing the alleged charges in Sweden. This law does not exist in the UK.

Which basically means if the swedes get him to Sweden then he will be handed over to the Yanks even before they interrogate him on these 'charges'
