SkyFire beta goes public

Skyfire

Been using it for a cuople of weeks now - it was cool seeing stuff render and have animations on my TyTN2 - you can even use BBC iPlayer on it and watch the TV through a WiFi connection. It means that I can access websites that previously sent IE mobile utterly crazy. However - it does munch the GPRS data if you're using a mobile session and not WiFi. I don't think its going to replace IE on the phone, but I'll use it for non mobile browser optimised sites - facebook will still be through IE. Although Opera looks good with Facebook mobile....

Asus' own Eee-beater spied on web

ShinEee

Just got hold of a eee 1000H (WinXP) this morning - lovely little bit of gear - this look even better - although would prefer it to be WinXP Pro as well!

I see what people say about the touchpad keys being a bit stiff - they weren't joking. Can honestly say that IMHO its a nice bit a gear and wouldn't mind one for myself (this one was for the Boss's daughter!)

Asus 10 incher?

Why ship it with XP home? Why not XP Pro? That would be the sensible choice I would have thought.

If it ships with XP home, that means I 'm going to have to install Pro!

What a silly idea

Vista Updates

This is really confusing - apparently two of the prerequisite KB updates aren't being made available to Vista Ultimate.

Then why are they on my (Vista Ultimate) PC?

As with any new M$ Operating System there's bugs and problems - I honestly prefer Vista to XP Pro. Every time I have to go back to an XP Pro computer I spend 5 minutes remembering how to do something that would be so simple in Vista.

But I will be bulk buying some XP Pro licences in case of problems....

Oh and to all the Penguin fanboys - we have to use M$ products as that's what my company's clients require - and I'm glad.

(PS I have a life - I don't go home from work and spend the rest of the day tweaking the latest issue of fluffy bunny or what-ever-its-called-and-no-I'm-not-interested-either ubuntu so it will actually work with all my devices. If you enjoy fine - but I'll never take you seriously so don't try)

Legal, major label DRM-free MP3s hit UK (at last)

Play.com

Brilliant.

I've just replaced my Air - Moon Safari album which some bugger nicked off me years ago for less than £7. And I can stick it back on CD without worrying about the DRM causing issues further down the line.

A nice easy shopping experience - almost easier than Amazon - I look forward to seeing the rest of the labels get on board.

Oh, by the way - MP3 is just easier (vitually universal support) and 320Kbs is good enough for most people's ears.

Not happy with PC World's customer service?

PC Whirled

I have had the misfortune to have to go into PC World on several occasions as I really need to replace something that's broken and its got to be fixed that day - can't wait for next day delivery!

It pities me when I go in there as the number of times I've been looking for a lead (overpriced) or something else (overpriced) and a member of the public has come up to me and asked me for advice.

The response each and every time to the other customer is always the same:

"Don't buy it from here!"

PC World has turned into an organisation that has stopped listening to its customers and now only listens to its auditors. Sad, really when you think about it as if they did their job properly - its a fantastic opportunity to take over the world (of joe public PC sales and do it properly).

Luckily for me Maplins has just opened around the corner from PC World in Poole - they still don't know much, but stock levels are better and the prices lower.

HOWEVER - If you have a business account with PC World, they aren't too bad - about on par with most other e-tailers - although they are still painful.

I buy everything I can from Misco, DABs and a few other mail order companies. Just can't face going into PC World these days and seeing all those poor customers getting shafted.
