Ever wondered what it's like working for Microsoft? Leaked survey shines a light on how those at the code coalface feel

Re: "It sounds like some of these complainers don't know how good they've got it"

What's weird about free drinks/coffee? It's a basic requirement as far as I'm concerned - I wouldn't work for a company that only had those 1990s style soapy dishwater coffee machines. You save a fortune over coughing up for Starbucks or whatever N times a day. Instant coffee is not the same.

Free food would be lovely - even better savings to be had - and no tax man involved. Lunch is expensive in the city.

Let's face it if companies want people to go back to the office - they're going to have to start offering decent perks to compete. Otherwise why would you bother with the faff / expense?

IT vs politics

I haven't read up about whatever comments Stallman is supposed to have made. However if he did suggest sex with young girls is somehow ok, I find that repulsive; especially given I have a 10 year old daughter.

However I'm also really not liking this current trend around people making everything so political. We need to find the balance.

Re: Jesus, humans are screwed

Well "pretty'" is't the term I'd use - but yeah sure the physical devices themselves and their controls/GUIs should look good and be very polished, intuitive and easy to use and fast. Sure I appreciate the command line as much as the next geek, but I also appreciate great design and good looks and the need to appeal / make things accessible to the mass market.

Again Apple may by and large pull together existing ideas and polish them - but I don't see may other companies with this obsessive attention to detail - and they up the game for everyone else.

Re: Apple do innovate

@JEDIDAH - Huh? You're missing my point I think - sure we all generalise - but his use of this phrase made it come across like people who buy Apple kit aren't capable of being objective and aren't conscious of the negatives of doing so. Actually I don't think he meant this - which is why I think the use of the phrase didn't do him any favours.

Never mind - your totally off the wall reaction suggests you're not capable of being very objective.

Re: Apple do innovate

You're not doing yourself any favours using terms like "iFans". It makes you come across as a teenage kid. There are plenty of us who are capable of being objective about these things you know. At the end of the day there are plenty of good and bad things about Apple products and the same with competing products.

You make it sound like all of us blindly rush out and buy Apple kit simply because they are blinded my marketing or something.

So what if Android had a touch-screen interface already - the point is what was it like? Did it require a stylus, was it easy to use/reactive/intuitive. We've already said Apple's trick here wasn't about inventing anything new as such, but pulling together a bunch of ideas into a product and polishing the heck out of them.

What a bunch of clueless complainers

Great post Kim! I agree completely.

So we have a bunch of clueless geeks complaining because it's not offering everything they desired? Get real - if it's priced around £300 in the UK (more like £350 I guess) then I'll get one for sure. Be perfect for carrying around in my bag on holiday for a bit of web browsing or watching movies on the plane.

Do I really need it? No. Is it a replacement for my desktop or laptop? No. Will it be a sexy bit of kit that excels at what it's designed for. Almost certainly. The way you intereact with this thing, along with a smooth sexy experience and glitch free performance is what counts. This is Minority Report territory. Besides it will only be a matter of time till the technology filters up to laptops. Also OS release 4.0 is rumoured to fix the multi-tasking constraints.

As to the "network engineer" teling us OSX is way more unstable than Windows. Well I'm a software engineer and let me tell you my macbook and OSX desktop are as stable as hell, extremely fast and never crash. Maybe you have faulty memory, who knows. I far prefer using a Unix environment to Windows and I'm suprised as a network engineer you don't too. Guess you're not that technical really.

Windows 7 UAC shutoff 'bug' leaves Microsoft unmoved

Hugo

Am I missing something?

Why on earth would you want to turn off UAC? What a stupid thing to do. It's there for a reason - just make it unobtrusive enough - OSX and Linux manage it fine.

To the anonymous idiot who claims Apple purchasers have more money than sense? What are yo talking about. Aside from great design, some of us buy them for the OS which is damn good. The second hand value is also infinitely better than a PC.

Real believable!

"Sometimes I love Microsoft technology so much that I can't wait to tell people about it, and this is one of those times"

That's just brilliant! To think these marketing people probably actually think we talk like that.....
