I can't understand why they don't put nfc. My cheap (really cheap) Huawei has nfc built in.

That would create a disaster. Google and Microsoft doesn't mix.

Apache man disables Internet Explorer 10 privacy setting

What will happen is worse than profiling

If everyone wonders around with do not track enabled, sites (pushed by advertisers) will ship their "apps" which does far more than tracking analytics to win app store.

Every "app" will mean more distance from real, open web.

You don't need to be "Ph.D.", just look to app stores (especially Android, transparent permissions) and question if those "apps" of news sites can't be done with a new standards based mobile sites.

Listen up, Nokia: Get Lumia show-offs in pubs or it's game over

Ilgaz

Re: The apps

Symbian developers packed and went to Android, not win phone as Android allows their apps to be ported.

X-plore etc are all going fine with Android now. They aren't direct ports too, they provide a real Android experience.

Ilgaz

The UI seems impressive

Never used win phone but it seems tile thing impressed everyone therefore there is "win 7" launcher, locker and keyboard on Android.

Guys, the design of Android from ground up guarantees that you can't race with it in UI & UX department. Its customization level is at Linux level. Even beyond that since even a 8 year old can change system default shell.

Google beefs up security portfolio with VirusTotal buy

Re: Uses

I also think they will add "google sign in". If they tie it to an automated service, AV guys won't be happy. They donate their stuff for humans, e.g. you will say "Wow comodo detected that" and perhaps buy comodo next time.

Ballmer predicts 400 MILLION Win 8 Surface and Lumia fumblers

Someone

I am saying this from an Android phone, you wouldn't want google& Apple to dominate entire IT industry.

If this guy doesn't go away, it will happen. No matter whatever cool Linux or bsd you run, it will effect you too, like everyone, in real life.

Ilgaz

Is this guy a Mafia?

If you are ceo of a public company, you can't joke with numbers, predictions. That is what I know with my minimal financial knowledge.

This guy keeps joking, some investors keeps buying the numbers he make up and nobody including dead serious financial guys and lawyers don't dare to sue him.

So, is this guy somehow blackmailing them?

Seriously, even Zuckerberg didn't say "we will hit 2 billion users, bitch" like stuff after they went public.

BillG, please come back, we forgive you.

Torvalds bellows: 'The GNOME PEOPLE are in TOTAL DENIAL'

Ilgaz

Let me save them from reply

"screen saver is so 90s just like desktop!"

Ilgaz

Re: Blame

My device with other 300M devices (and counting crazy) runs Linux kernel + Debian and it has a lot of success.

So, both Linus and Cox did their job perfectly.

Ilgaz

Re: Torvalds is turning out to be

The technology today does not yet require plan 9. A super computer uses plan9 (IBM one) since it provides its needs better than Unix V1.

Plan 9 is one of things we will hear more once chip tech catches up. I bet either Apple or google will be the first ones.

Ilgaz

Re: Torvalds is turning out to be

If you promote free software and live a poor man life with a CV a lot of Redmond/ Cupertino/ Armonk guys can only dream about, you have to be a little bit "extreme".

Do you think "free software" is just software? They want the information to be free. If you think he has extreme views, you haven't seen anything yet.

Ilgaz

rms and Linus has a bad habit

They say things today, they get flames by these "funny people" and years later, people say "oh they were right but did you hear (whatever weird unrelated thing) rms did in conference?"

Check the feedback rms got when he warned about Mono. Damn thing caused serious harm to core/ community of Debian via a stupid note taking application.

Ilgaz

Kernel guy keeps getting ignored by GUI guys

Years ago, the guy who "owns" the kernel wrote how stupid and alienating it is to write every freaking detail to boot screen while system (kernel) boots and it should stay silent as much as possible (unless error happens) instead of generating information overload.

Did everyone listen? No. I am sure even a $20 M exotic mainframe that may never reboot in its entire life displays less messages in boot.

Ilgaz

I installed Debian lately & gnome is gone

I am not a person who is Gnu purist or Linux fanatic considering the machine I installed Debian to: a powerbook g4

For the same reason I went with Debian (just to get rid of unsupported system), I selected "GUI" in initial install and you can't imagine my anger when I saw the degree of Mono infection in Debian, just for that stupid note taking application. You know what I did? Removed entire gnome.

Gnome's issue is not desktop, it is this disgusting, arrogant gang infecting their community and even gtk itself.

Android dev smacked with £50k fine over premium rate SMS scam

Ilgaz

Too many permissions

Things are really absurd in Android software scene lately. Even a freaking "go theme" requests "full network access" (aka server) without any stated reason (crash reports?) & gets hundreds of thousands users.

I am not saying they do evil things, most theme designers are artists, they can't even code basic. Thing is, something will happen one day and a lot of users (even including me) will learn their lesson in a bitter way.

Here we go again: Critical flaw found in just-patched Java

Ilgaz

Re: As most security experts recommend...

I would say "just disable applets" but thanks to win jungle like browsers configuration, I say the same thing. Remove it.

Ilgaz

Re: Also, no Freenet.

They don't need to bother with technical stuff. I am sure 90% of pedo/ terrorist content is uploaded/ maintained by governments to bad mouth it.

Ilgaz

Action needed by respected organisations (not users)

We should, soon find an alternative. Something works, Gnu/FSF or Apache should start something by talking to Intel and AMD.

Or, IBM with their one of true open source licenses.

Virtual box is doing fine because of initial codebase. Companies like oracle can spoil everything.

Oracle rushes out patch for critical 0-day Java exploit

Ilgaz

Re: Does this leave java 6 intact?

I took my time to explain him and others how to keep Java 6 or any virtual machine self contained in app directory so nothing can touch it.

Mistake. Post removed.

Ilgaz

They assume user actually listened to OS vendor& sane people and...

1) doesn't run as administrator

2) at least have UAC turned on

3) at least reads what UAC says before a web page visit results in password prompt!

They are overly optimistic about person between screen and chair.

Ilgaz

Re: Credit where credit is due...

They seem to understand the degree of vulnerability finally.

A USA government backed organisation, CERT could not get a word from them just 24 hours ago and (I suppose) had to suggest removing Java functionality from desktop browser. Instructions (thanks to win) were way complex so a lot of people ended up removing Java for good.

If they are serious, they should hire a real win developer that will code a real installer. Ask any win admin, they are using MSI in most basic and stupid way possible, ignoring built in win scheduler that can even automate security updates (for all users, not just admin) and ignore patching possibilities.

Apple actually works with such people and does all above with their "software update" on win.

Huawei picks Android for new tablets and smartphones

Ilgaz

Why reinvent wheel?

It will sound weird to non Android users but Chinese took over the ui scene on Android long time ago.

Go launcher is undisputed king and new comer TSF shell manages to sell beta version for $20 which muted everyone.

Huawei should have licensed/ customized existing things instead of going with their own.

Re: Had the C64 version...

It must be hard for anyone who didn't born in 70s to understand the amazing thing. It talked.

Man, poor other 8 bit computer users, it was a shocking upperhand came from nowhere. "my Atari has 256 colors", "my game talks". Instant mute.

Also,c64 tape loading (thanks to turbo code) was light speed compared to Atari, spectrum etc. Weak machine on specifications, better developers...

Disable Java NOW, users told, as 0-day exploit hits web

Ilgaz

Re: I agree

Can you point me to the latest silverlight for Linux and Android? Official one, same features and support as win one.

Ilgaz

No word from oracle yet

Sorry but I noticed an unbelievable thing. If you check

http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/MORO-8XKL37

You will see even US CERT wasn't contacted in time of writing.

While on it, if you are a win user and have broadband, have no mission critical apps written in Java, easiest way to disable applets seems to be removing/uninstalling Java altogether. Using registry modification seems absurd to me.

Ilgaz

US CERT agreed, disable applets

I just had this url in my inbox and I don't remember anything written in this tone for a long time from them.

http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/636312

Does it mean USA government will feel compelled to disable Java on their terminals too?

Do any person remotely connected with Oracle know what it means to have such a alert from an institution like that? Not it seems, nobody heard a out of band, emergency patch yet.

Ilgaz

Real life

These days, if you have Java, you have it because you absolutely need it.

Firefox 15 offers fewer leaks, more frags

Ilgaz

Seen any use? Even advertisers ignore.

Having seen opera support all and more on mobile, I have yet to see one, single, real usage of webgl and especially standard cam input support.

All poor opera mobile got was "OMG changed permissions, 1 star!" comments from Android idiots who doesn't get a single clue from what opera and Firefox tries to achieve. Save the ignorant from spyware apps.

Ilgaz

Android needs esr too

Although everyone likes innovation, the size and no backwards compatibility for mobile is and will be an annoyance especially for enterprise.

I am away from Mozilla community for a long time with bad memories but if you have a word there, know how to intervene, push for an ESR release for mobile. The powerful and tested extension tech with a stable version can be big deal for both Mozilla and Android in enterprise.

A central configuration, deployment tech can come later. Better hurry or Microsoft can surprise everyone _again_.

Want a Windows 8 Start Button? Open source to the rescue!

Ilgaz

Hostage using open source too

It hurts double time when Apple abuse open source software which can be recompiled to push their users to upgrade.

How long would it take to compile new Apache on a xeon? 10 minutes?

Ilgaz

Open source and free

You shouldn't expect testing, feedback, consumer tests (!) from an application hosted at sourceforge.

Get an account and be active.

Microsoft denies Windows 8 app spying via SmartScreen

Ilgaz

Re: Yet another reason...

7 & vista has the exact same tech if one uses the default (ie) browser.

Usual suspects (google) won't miss this "open door" too.

Funny thing is, they will (or their PR) state Apple who started this forgetting one big difference: it works offline.

Ilgaz

Don't hate me for saying

I really remember this "technology" blocking a safe download of a patch from a very big name (can't remember) saying it wasn't downloaded many times. I was ready to hit virustotal and Kaspersky to analyze file until I noticed the reason for "security alert": file isn't popular.

Ivy Bridge for Ultrabooks

Ilgaz

RAM is a big issue

4 Gb is actually 32bit boundary, if Intel& Ms didn't do stupid things historically, there wouldn't be need for 64 bit OS.

A person buying something other than tablet in this age is clearly looking for power and all he/ she gets is 4gb with a joke like gpu which may be less powerful and less supported (known, big deal) than a tablet gpu.

If the the 4 gb issue didn't exist,I was looking for a portable real computer which I would likely go with gentoo or Debian.

Soon, companies will go crazy with photo resolutions, screen resolution to push people upgrading their working devices and nothing with 4gb RAM will happily handle it.

Ilgaz

Re: screen resolution

Are you sure that junk embedded in cpu (HD4000) can handle accelerated 3d&2d in such resolutions?

I saw one and only 1FPS on a white macbook having hd3000.

Ilgaz

HD graphics (!)

Since they all include forced, wasted "Intel HD graphics", no company will dare to put a real gpu such as nvidia or ATI to those.

So, ultra book becomes high speed netbook with added weight and price.

Flash Player to vanish from Android store on Wednesday

Arabic or Hebrew title is cheap joke

As nobody of this level is that stupid and windows developers still use ascii 8.3 naming (habit, tradition), Unix developers won't touch anything UTF in filename, someone really thinks others are dumb.

Hebrew (Mossad) or Arabic (who? Iran uses Persian) is really lame joke.

Nokia straps Qt into ejector seat and hits the shiny red button

Ilgaz

Re: Excellent news!

I guess qt passed the ultimate hardcore benchmark, being owned by Nokia idiots and not dying.

I am not being sarcastic or joking, I was a Nokia/ symbian user just until last year.

Ilgaz

Used their stuff on Sony Ericsson p1i

In weird times, 3 different, state of art browsers shipped for SE P1 symbian uiq right after it was pronounced dead by Sony.

One of them was Digia @web browser and I have used it. They really know how to code for sure.
