Windows 8 on ARM: Microsoft bets on Office 15 and IE10

Ilgaz

A reminder

World's most financially damaging virus/ worm was written in an interpreted language..

Not state of art x86 asm, it was written on a freaking interpreted language. Actually, a script

www.answers.com/topic/iloveyou

Ilgaz

Sure?

I also remember the days we had to do chmod /dev/dsp 666 just to get sound working.

I use win 7 and have setup debian to manage my android easier, inside a low (960 mb) restricted memory, no access to actual hardware virtual machine. It isn't ubuntu, just plain debian which isn't really end user thing.

Man that was the day I really regretted my windows license, especially after watching how easily other users (the ones forced me) use it with performance.

Ilgaz

I suggest my plan

I will ignore windows 8 and keep using windows 7. No windows or os x should be installed before it gets at least 2 major updates and a security update unless you want to pay for joining a beta test anyway ;) Times has changed and companies are abusing the online update scheme, opportunity to rush products to market before they are ready.

Anyway, once the Microsoft shares crash because of these Apple like actions without actually being Apple, dancing monkey is fired and windows 8.5 or 9 ships, with a start menu

We, users can have evil, long term plans too.

Ilgaz

Few reasons?

You really think hundreds of millions of people and companies spent billions of dollars for software and training does give a heck to whatever cool factor does the new paradigm have?

If they did, they would be running Linux or bsd.

Ilgaz

gnustep

You wouldn't believe the opportunity and cost savings, image overhaul companies miss when they don't do the scheme below:

1) port to gnustep/linux

2) cleanup and get rid of accidental Linuxisms compiling for freebsd

3) spare a week for osx port, yes once you start with gnustep, not the cocoa, it is damn easy. There are apps you can compile from single source resulting in osx and Linux binary.

Once you do these, ios and android is there, waiting for you. Once you get a mobile interface of course.

Ilgaz

Silverlight gone? Poor content providers

I know a huge digital pay TV network invested millions of dollars for silver light Drm inside browser. Not naming them and they aren't in EU or USA.

obviously, they can get some kind of shell app but it breaks the basic reason why they went with silverlight, to sell content to facebook/ twitter addict, never writing browser types and of course, badly administered working types.

Some people even forgot how to install apps. Activex model was working for them.

anyway, they shouldn't have trusted Microsoft who didn't even release an official plugin (that monkey's clone doesn't count)

Apple orders PC builder to 'choose sides' in laptop battle?

Ilgaz

Taiwan may surprise them

Asus, came from zero just by good management and vision has a very special place in Taiwan and Taiwanese people.

This can really backfire and they may become the first company hated/ boycotted by both Taiwan and China.

Apple's secret outsource: 'Even more software to be made in India'

Ilgaz

Hp can be understood but Apple?

Apple doesn't work with cut throat margins, their profit ratio is insane, machines are expensive but they run a good, bug free Unix desktop and cost of operating system added to the hardware.

And now we hear, operating system and Applications are coded by some Bangalore guys. I really respect and admire Chinese and Indian software scene but not the "outsource"guys. I know their way of work.

Ilgaz

Finally an explanation for my leopard nightmare

So these guys were responsible for 10.5.0 rushed disaster which leaks RAM and cpu when aqua progress bar appears doesn't eject/ turnoff usb disks while shutting down, has half the opengl performance on same hardware compared to 10.4.11

All of above were reported to Apple using official channels, fix promised and never arrived until end of life.

It is amazing that this particular outsourcing scandal (yes, check their margin) is used to bad mouth China. Ask android users about quality of Chinese developed software, eg. Go Suite. Yes, their English may suck but code/ care doesn't.

IT guy answers daughter's Facebook rant by shooting her laptop

Ilgaz

Microsoft school

Possibly some school infested by "donated" Microsoft software& servers.

To stop a jerk doing really stupid things, especially if she is 16 and have a built in webcam (you get what I mean) requires commercial, manageable and reliable software. I had to keep a machine safe and machine had to run win, ended up in hands of Kaspersky and outpost. Free antivirus doesn't cut it when someone clicks every link mentioning Justin Bieber.

If schools "free"servers upgraded "for free", it may also require a newer windows client.

Ilgaz

Donate

A smart phone, especially an android is actually a small, power saving and slow general purpose computer which can be used as an educational device if the receiving person is carefully picked.

It is the user who decides its purpose, by usage pattern.

Ilgaz

Really

He is possibly working like slave, if you actually listen to what he says, he had a nightmare as a teen, working and studying in 2 schools and a charity.

Spend 16 years for a person who wants to act like an imaginary Britney (since Britney too worked like a slave too) and right after upgrading her laptop and possibly buy some high end security software to save it from her own idiotic usage scheme, read what she has written about you, her parents to get thumbs up.

The part he is really mad is the daughter referring a poor worker without a name, 'cleaning lady'.

Another thing people seems to miss is he refers to his wife and says she told him to fire one for her too. So, this is really controlled violence against an object, decided by parents.

I know very rich, highly educated, elite people who would force their son, daughter to some luxury asylum middle of nowhere for a lot less, for months. Of course, as they don't have that accent or a gun, it is acceptable.

Ilgaz

Got the joke but...

One of most flamed and trolled guys in open source/ hacker scene is esr and haven't seen any impolite answer or "banning" from him. He doesn't care about your nationality either.

Those liberal, anti gun guys however...

Path runs screaming from privacy snafu

Ilgaz

Of course

I like the Java micro/ android way better than symbian/ apple. Some guy knowing right people and having evil lawyer who can write a good (as in evil) privacy policy can do a lot more and you aren't being asked anyway.

It is the ignorance of people bothering me. People doesn't give others private phone numbers to strangers a they give it to other companies for some basic functionality. Soon or later, some government will spot this lack of sense and they will say "hey why don't we abuse it too?"

Ilgaz

Use android market for a while

A lot of stuff, including even a flight tracker asks permissions to access address book and they get more than 1m downloads.

People lost their sense of privacy including the respect to their friends privacy.

Not saying to apologize on behalf of some social network which I despise, it is just way beyond who asks permissions to do what. It is up to governments or some industry, a new founded one perhaps to save people from their ignorance. Just like there are laws against heavy, highly addictive drugs.

Eolas claims royalties for browser apps and plug-ins

Ilgaz

Someone should support him

I am really concerned about Sir Lee since these are the things which an academic like him should never live. I mean being dragged to some little Texas town/ village whatever for some liar troll who accomplished nothing in their life.

The Wired report and the comments below it about the town atmosphere really alerted me. Says he was shaken etc.

Mr. Lee isn't rms or esr, these guys are really used to the scumbag industry tactics. Even Ballmer is a better person to stand at that Court but not a idealist like Lee.

Android's Chrome finish comes too late for Flash coating

Ilgaz

Better

They should support the majority of android devices, the ones with less RAM and they should support non broadband connections.

Opera, a commercial browser with business interest did the above for profit and succeeded. An open source browser became something as the most elitist one among others. Even Ms will add compression to their next internet explorer since they figured 3g on entire planet won't happen.

On the other hand, Mozilla seriously discuss dropping support for xp etc and they don't support any android which isn't high end. What really happened to them?

Ilgaz

At least you have seen one

Wondering around with opera mobile which has video support and google android browser, I haven't seen any page using the so called html5 video.

As a person from TV industry I know couple of producers who would be outraged when they hear freely ripped videos (as in easily) and people skipping ads.

Things were going slightly fine until this h264 fight happened and google came up with their format.

Remember everyone hated animated gif and somehow animated png didn't get enough support? What happened as result? Gif lived on, ads lived on.

Industry doesn't want non technical user to skip ads, millions of dollars at stake, they are already paying insane amounts for bandwidth. So, what happens when hippies reject? They keep flash alive.

Google etc should really learn the media industry before proposing executives to trash billions of dollars in investment to standards like h264/mpeg. In industry, everything (including Sony devices) are tied to some industry (not single entity) standard.

Mac OS X ARM port by Apple work experience kid revealed

Ilgaz

Who knows?

Apple famously have $100B cash, Microsoft and their server division are huge and they are pushing .Net for ages.

They have no obligation to admit they code portable stuff. In fact that is what they should do for their long term interest.

Read the history of nt, it was developed to run on a cpu which was never available to general public. Why? They wanted to make sure no x86 only code slips in. Nt name itself comes from processor or its board, new technology is made up.

I know Mac developers who would still ship for powerPC if Apple made it easier just to make sure they don't do non portable hacks.

Ilgaz

Shock?

I really don't get why people are surprised. It is clear that no company of that size will rely on x86 only operating system. Before Microsoft acted like a spoiled kid, they had nt running on every processor. Next showed their framework (grandfather of osx) running on nt.

Especially Apple side compiled and managed osx for Intel since 10.0 and we are supposed to be shocked.

Google's whack-a-mole Marketplace cleans house again

Ilgaz

It killed symbian free developers

The model you talk about is symbian security model. People ended up disabling signature verification and developers gave up very good ideas since it required thousands of dollars to get those certificates.

Only the large corporations can afford something like that. Also some stuff should never be certified like sms preview get those certificates and do non malicious but really stupid unnecessary thing like sending sms to Finland when installed. I reported it to Nokia and they made it editors pick later :)

Avast! Mobile Security

Ilgaz

In addition

They use the model which avg made popular. More users: less bugs and better detection rate.

If a new virus appears it will likely hit one of millions of users instead of one of thousands of paid users.

I think they will release a centrally administered corporate version and branded/ operator supplied versions. They can also sell it as a tie in to device makers who desperately need to differentiate.

Ilgaz

They put on purpose

First, it may stop script kiddies from trying something and second, if you have a device which runs into low memory events, it prevents android operating system from killing it.

It sounds weird but android picks the most invisible background apps and services to kill when there is low memory.

Ilgaz

Everyone uses for other stuff

Funny that everyone uses these apps for other functions like the anti theft you mentioned. Also the very serious threat of fake apps and cracked developer accounts.

I never enabled the actual virus checking of my antivirus until that genius who misunderstood the whole deal spoke like Microsoft before Bill Gates security memo.

Ilgaz

Spotted something

It has potentially unwanted program detection and it spotted something from android market which can be used both by white and black hats.

Deny usb debugging and deny root from internet access does a lot more in current scene. That is the part the google idiot mentioned every time when they talk about security misses.

Note that the app it does detect is on android market, it can be used for good (watch your kid) but it can also be used horribly wrong. That is way beyond google market design to cope with.

anyway,I gave up my paid antivirus which still have subscription for this since it is way more better written by people who actually cares. Mr Kaspersky should get rid of entire android app developers, not the detectors.

An NT-powered Windows Phone? Not so fast...

Ilgaz

Linux and Mac share same design philosophy

Linux and osx share the same design principles (Unix) and those design principles (down to apps) makes it possible to scale down to tiny smartphones without changing anything, just removing unnecessary parts.

You know the 'run level' thing on Linux, that is the part Microsoft lacks and some real hackers/ engineers from ms admits its their weakness. There is no clear border where gui starts or basic io ends.

AMD doubles down on existing Opteron server sockets

Ilgaz

I really don't get it

I upgraded a cheap, low end business desktop from single core to dual without having to change anything else and paid only $75.

On the other hand, Intel does real cheap tricks like adding extra pin etc.

Amd also grew up, they don't claim weird things anymore, thank God the megahertz fake wars are over after losing 3 years of it progress (for Intel especially) and haven't heard amd saying they beat i7 etc.

So why would anyone hate amd? Intel? It would be their worst day if amd died.

Ilgaz

A guess

Integers mentioned with massive amounts of RAM. Finance I guess.

Huawei extends R&D in UK

Ilgaz

Careful

They are expecting red army performance and they have manners similar to that. At least this country (not UK here) that is what I heard. 9 to 21 work hours etc.

When you root one of their handsets, you figure the company run by engineers, minimal modifications to ui and performance hacks. well documented /etc

Google spews out 'privacy' email to Sky punters too

Ilgaz

I know why

That apology post must also have been written elsewhere, outsourced ;)

NT daddy turns his hand to Xbox

Ilgaz

Of course, not pure

Mac and win had to cave in for commercial reasons, I don't say you run next when you run Mac today, that purity exists theoretically when you run Darwin and window maker.

Hfs+ has no place on next either or those massive b tree files and forks.

I am talking about basic design philosophy is carried.

Ilgaz

Bad news

90% of them run Vms with win gui, 9% run mach/ Unix/ next hybrid and 1% Linux/gnu hybrid. If you look to engine room under fancy gui and branding.

It is the design philosophy/ basics that really differs.

Ilgaz

What can he do?

A console became media center? Fine but how can that company stand the idea of a full remote control for android shipping on android market? Seriously, they don't even release a live messenger client for android, they use a puppet/ officially licensed company.

A full feature remote for android matters since xbmc has one.

Cutler, who is a genius who saved Microsoft with his NT should really sit and speak to them again, perhaps they can listen to him and understand what kind of an universal device with support for standards (including matroska/mkv) people expect. Hope they don't confuse themselves with Apple. Only Apple can sell Apple TV with such specs. People using Microsoft products have no such patience or understanding.

Intel bags $120m patent hoard from RealNetworks

Ilgaz

So, Intel lies?

I don't think it is a unique codec, could be h264 massively improved, rv10 and ra10 are h264 and aacp respectively.

However, I don't think Intel would lie about what they bought or get tricked.

Funny that win amp and real are called dead and they are both on android top10 lists even in their first generation. Helix is everywhere etc.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Android Tablet

Ilgaz

6 months

Consumer tech cycles every 6 months. No matter what you buy will be replaced with a better spec in half a year. I personally go with previous or even 1 year old tech since they are cheaper, way more stable (thanks to early adopters) and less "show off". I can easily put my cheap Huawei to Starbucks table and watch news without anyone thinking I am showing off/ bragging.

Sony Ericsson announces pre-slurp loss

Ilgaz

Evil Swedish!

So it was the evil Swedish partner that murdered perfect feature phones like k series and messed up one of the best touchscreen phone kernel/ gui mix lik rock solid symbian kernel running uiq framework.

For example, it was Ericsson,a Telecom giant who had the wonderful idea of coding a firmware updater in Java/ flash. Yes they actually managed to code such a thing, ask p1 owners.

Believe or not, there isn't any official remote for PS3 on android market. So, Swedish company gone, where is the app Sony?

Symantec downplays source-code trophy theft

Ilgaz

There is an example in hand

Clamav source is in the open and it didn't prevent it from detecting a threat. Worldwide mail does still work thanks to bayes/rbl and clam you know. I mean clam is a major target for every black hat.

Ilgaz

Of course!

Don't you know symantec deletes entire source tree & starts over to keep bloat away every year? ;)

Official: The smartphones that suck much more than others

Ilgaz

Everyday dialogues

-don't you have unlimited data plan?

-no Sir, otherwise everyone would watch hd videos, streaming! Our network would collapse, you can't even dial emergency (liars, emergency had own dedicated bandwidth)

-so why does cheapest phone have 7.2 Mbps data capability?

-for faster web page loads

Kodak heading to Chapter 11

Ilgaz

Not in 35mm but

Isn't the file format of that device/ software still a standard after all these years?

They could be the most stupidly acting company ever, especially for doing nothing with their massive brand value in professional movie business. One can't understand how a company capable of most complex sensors and advanced color management isn't in digital cinema which they started.

Ilgaz

So

How do you plan to sell printer and camera to the masses when TV stations and web shouting you are dead? Especially printer since it needs original consumable stuff. People buying their printers didn't buy to fill them with no name inks you know.

Ilgaz

Colour management

They could focus on consumer color management so people wouldn't live without seeing a single true color on their monitors, devices.

Even super old fashion Pantone does consumer stuff now but they have to rely on outside. E.g. there isn't Huey on mobile.

Ilgaz

They still invent

Just check their watches, every model even including the traditional Edifice have some kind of unique thing. Even the legendary cheap quartz models went to insane levels of power and battery tech that they have 7! Years of battery life now.

Android Market tops 400,000 apps, climbing fast

Ilgaz

Even download numbers, install numbers doesn't matter

Some real crap are downloaded but not even being opened to give 1 star and "heads up" warnings to uneducated mass. Only way to review is downloading it.

There is also "15 minute window" trial system on android which will also add to download counter.

Not like Nokia statistics are perfect too. Tired, lame numbers game Apple started.

Ilgaz

Imagine the shock I lived

Being victim of Elop and his burning symbian, moved to android just to end up using the exact same apps from same software houses on my new, latest version, supported OS. It's like 5 apps total.

If you are satisfied with your setup, don't get impressed with these numbers.

China Telecom piggybacks EE to create UK network

Ilgaz

Funny that

Huawei is one of few to put entire original android ROM sources on their web site.

If I wasn't lazy and had 4 free cores, I was planning to compile my original ROM with a newer gcc.

Another thing is, there is almost no extra stupid extra apps on their stock firmware.

How Apple won the West (and lost the world)

Ilgaz

Casio makes phones

they do make some amazing phones with seriously unique specs (water resistant!) but for some odd reason, they don't release them outside Japan.

Ilgaz

They are upgrading to Android for a reason

Right now, it isn't mature as Symbian but you can do almost all Symbian things (and more) on Android.

All theme guys, advanced software guys (e.g. Melon mobile) are slowly moving to Android for this reason since nobody wants to "hack" a phone just to get different icons. I was amazed when I noticed even "Dialer" of Android can be replaced without any hacks or some $10.000 tier 1 certificate.

Of course, the OS isn't mature as Symbian yet so nobody should blindly buy their Symbian apps thinking it is exactly the same functionality. Happens to lot of people.

One of the most active areas of Symbian development were themes. While Android doesn't have the maturity of Nokia UI (no vectors yet I think), what would a Nokia/Symbian user even have software to change theme twice a day based on day/night use? Windows phone? He/She will change what? Tile font? Blue colour? Not like they are allowed.
