Beeb to cut the f**king swearing

bluesxman

fuck the fucking fuckers

I've paid my TV licence, I expect to see full and varied use of all the wonderfully colourful aspects in the English language.

I see they're playing the "won't somebody think of the children?" card. There are very few "mainstream" expletives that I know now that I didn't already know and use at the age of 7. Albeit I'd never use them in from of the parents (at age 7, I mean ... now it's a different story). Which seems a tad ironic, my 7 year oldness censoring himself for the benefit of his parents -- "won't somebody think of the ... parents?"

In closing, 25 years of swearing hasn't done me any cunting harm.

@ Lee RE: RE: Useless

I entirely agree with all your counter points, with the possible exception of "3" (would YOU bother to report the loss of an uninsured PAYG phone worth only a few quid?) but you seem to have missed mine. I don't anticipate the average man/woman in the street being arsed to do go to such measures.

But the article states:

<<SNIP>> According to the Government, the purpose of the Bill is to "allow communications data capabilities for the prevention and detection of crime and protection of national security to keep up with changing technology".<<SNIP>>

I draw your attention to "prevention and detection of crime and protection of national security". I read from that that the supposed purpose of this initiative is to ensnare criminals and terrorists, but it's going to do no such thing, as the determined among them would likely be able circumvent it in a number of ways.

The net result would be a nice big database of (reasonably) law abiding citizens. In fact, given the requirements (ID card or passport) and popularity of mobile phones, it's tantamount to a national ID system by the back door.

Black Helicopter, as I've digressed from my original point into (un)healthy paranoia.

useless

So expect a marked increase in:

1) fraudulently obtained/stolen ID documents

2) fake ID documents -- does the average phone shop sales person know the difference?

3) mobile phone theft

4) back-of-a-lorry SIM card sales

5a) off the radar imports of PAYG SIMs from other countries, without such tight controls

5b) over the counter international calling cards

6) use of pay phones to call other pay phones

If I can think of 6 potential ways around it, in the space of a few minutes, I'm sure the collective minds of Johnny and Joanne Fundamentalist have thought of 12.

Is the ION VHS2PC Macrovision friendly?

bluesxman

may or may not help you...

My understanding of how MacroVision works means that it's essentially the receiving device that screws things up for you. The unseen/unheard MacroVision signals cause the automatic record-gain controls on the recording VCR to get themselves in a tangle, thus causing the darkening and/or quietening artifacts.

What I'm trying to say, in a round about way, is that I'd *imagine* it's the software at the PC end that you're going to have to worry about most of all. Though it would be nice if the playback device would just drop the wanky signals.

<digression>

How many movies are you talking? And how much is the VHS2PC? Unless you've got a plethora of tapes, it may be cheaper to spring for new DVD copies. Or get a cheap VHS player while you still can -- the kids ain't gonna be kids forever, and you can shit-can/eBay the lot in 5 odd years time!

Having said all that, if you don't want to splash out on the DVDs (subject to your technical copyright infringement scruples -- I'm actually a bit fuzzy on the legality of you transferring your VHS to DVD in fact) why not just download DVD rips of the movies? It's sure to be much better quality than some shonky VHS conversion from some cranky old over-watched tape. :o)

Nice use of Estate Agent measuring tactics, by giving the most attractive extreme of dimension only.

My pencil is roughly 0.5mm thick at its thinnest point (I haven't sharpened it today). However, it's over 10 x that thick at the arse end. Not exactly meaningful information when given out of context, is it?

Tell me what it measures at its thinnest point, thickest point, mean and median and you might get my attention.

RE: What is this loss crap?

"The thing sells for €400, where is the loss?" ... I can't believe I'm even going to bother responding to that, but respond I will.

The loss is where "the thing" costs more to produce than the manufacturer sells it to the wholesalers for.

It's called a "loss leader" -- lose money on the console, recoup it via software sales (hopefully). Which is, as has been pointed out a few times already, is common practice (though not always the case) in the console market.
