India forges ahead with fibre-to-the-village

Ole Juul

Re: Gram panchayats

I suspect that there is more than language to translate here. The culture and laws are different too. In many western countries you couldn't just "roll out fibre" without running afoul of the incumbents who would require enormous profits. The government certainly wouldn't be allowed to do it.

Ole Juul

Only in India you say?

Build prices for the contracts range from around $US940 per kilometre to just over $US1,000 per kilometre.

I wish Canadian Telcos could afford to spend that kind of money on new infrastructure. Where I live, they can however come up with much higher sums to repair old T1 copper, but I guess there's no profit in higher bandwidth here.

Red herring

They like things the way they are. The fact is that neither one of them is willing to challenge the other to give up Windows.

Re: Incomplete

I'm not sure why someone would open a browser, except if the power went off and they had to reboot. In any case, I just turned off JavaScript and the lights in the room got brighter, so you're probably right about the results not being detailed enough to justify any meaningful conclusions.

Microsoft borks botnet takedown in Citadel snafu

Ole Juul

Scary

Microsoft plans to use intelligence gained in Operation b54 to work with ISPs and Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) around the world to quickly and efficiently clean as many computers as possible.

So now they borked it once, and we're supposed to believe they won't bork it again? This is not an anti-Microsoft statement - just a good old fashioned pragmatic view.

Leaked Obama brief reveals US cyber defense, offense policy

Re: During the meanwhile ...

Are you sure you're looking the right way? I rather think of the term "cyber" as code for crazy attempts at make work schemes. In this case it certainly looks like it will create jobs. Think of as digital medicine men.

Pirate Bay Warg accused of hacking international police database

Ole Juul

Waste of time

Prosecuting these cases costs a lot of money, doesn't deter future hacks, and doesn't solve the problem. Instead, how about they spend all that money on securing their database?

Police 'stumped' by car thefts using electronic skeleton key

Ole Juul

Re: Only a matter of time.

"Physical access" involves tumblers and keys. Those haven't ever been secure. Leave aside the practice of key bumping, there are so many ways to circumvent physical locks.

Tumblers are often relatively easy to deal with, but the older lever locks are not. Yes, the cheap skeleton door keys are a joke, but even a very old 5 lever lock can be difficult, and/or time consuming to open. Of course there's a phobia for using old technology so that's out, along with anything that doesn't have fashion value. The bottom line is that there is no cure for car thieves - except driving a junker.

Google's Schmidt calls climate-change deniers 'liars'

Yes ASCII is a "format", but it's a simple one which is likely to survive a long time. I'm still trying to understand what all this other stuff is really good for. Why is everybody so bone headed about needing all that word processor stuff? I think the answer is that there is much less interest in what a document says than what it looks like.

Steelie Neelie wants roaming charges gone by Easter 2014

Ole Juul

Re: Countless, Needless, Artificial Obstacles

There are indeed many obstacles. I think that artificial ones like intellectual property, and the quenching monopolies we are seeing today, is what is holding us back. Roaming charges is one of those things that companies like to use to make extra profits, but they are inappropriate in a modern world. I would hope that readers here would embrace a progressive digital agenda - even if it doesn't go as far as some of us would like.

Google gives vendors seven-day bug disclosure deadline

Ole Juul

@AC 14:15

How does that protect the consumers?

By fostering a more responsive environment. As a consumer I like the idea of software developers competing on values that I appreciate - less vulnerabilities is a good example.

Ole Juul

Protect users

I'm with MO. Give users the opportunity to uninstall the software until a fix is found. What's so bad about that? Just how damaging these vulnerabilities are likely to be is a question, but certainly in other areas users would like to block any attack vector as soon as possible - nevermind a week later.

Ubuntu's Shuttleworth: Microsoft no longer dominates PC biz

Ole Juul

Re: Yes and no.

FreeBSD people are just not so driven by fashion, and that's by choice. As for whether any Linux distro is better than Ubuntu now is not important. Although it varies over the months, for most desktop use one distro is as good as another. Pick one, and if you don't like it, try another. I really think that this supposed distro problem is blown out of proportion. In fact I have a feeling that the distro loyalty meme is going to get old soon - and that includes in the Windows world. Good reasons for using Windows aren't going to go away soon, but I think that good reasons for using Linux (any distro) are going to become clearer as people realize that it's got nothing to do with loyalty to anything.

'Secret Pentagon papers' show China hacked into Patriot missile system

Forget the word 'cyberwar' says Marcus Ranum

Ole Juul

An old story

“Anyone talking about cyberwar is trying to enlarge their influence,” he said.

That'd be the US then.

There are, he added, a lot of people in the US military concerned that “someone's going to ask 'why do you have all this expensive cyber security stuff, when you keep getting owned by 14-year-old kids?'”

The emperor has no clothes.

AT&T adds 61¢ 'Mobility Administrative Fee' for users

Ole Juul

Re: DST Fee?

I'm sure it's already on their to-do list.

Ole Juul

Re: Admin fee?

It's all just con talk. Now why can't I charge them an admin fee? I go to a lot of trouble making phone calls and feel that I should be compensated. After all, if I didn't do that, the telephone company wouldn't exist, so in a sense I'm working for them. Of course I have the advantage of being able to take my business elsewhere, and they don't, so I guess I should feel sorry for them.

Phones for the elderly: Testers wanted for senior service

Ole Juul

Re: It's not compulsory

It's an excellent idea for SOME people . . .

I think you nailed it. This is not a matter of "ageism", but that people have different needs as they get older. There's lots of old folk out here who are quite capable of figuring out digital devices, some of them may even have invented some. Others lose certain selective faculties that makes this phone a real help.

Twitter locks down logins by adding two-factor authentication

US power grid the target of 'numerous and daily' cyber-attacks

Ole Juul

Re: Working OK?

I imagine that by 'attacks' they mean probes to find out if some well-known TCP port has been left open by mistake, rather than APTs.

I agree. The bogeyman takes on any form you want. The lack of clarity and substantiation really bugs me when we hear of these foreign attacks. Surely I'm not the only one who considers credibility to be an issue here and would like that "little issue" cleared up before I take this seriously.

Google preps for Brussels wrist-slap

Ole Juul

Re: Of little use

I search because I want information,

Me too. Search results are filled up by hawkers and it destroys ability to search effectively for many things. Try searching on anything even remotely related to laptop batteries and the problem becomes extremely obvious. Why is it that it is assumed that I want to buy something? I rarely do, and these search results simply come across like a crowded street where everyone is coming up to you begging for money. It's actually really uncomfortable. Google isn't half as useful as it used to be.

Ole Juul

Of little use

If only they would label commercial interests so we can filter them all out. Or am I the only one who's search interests do not always involve a pressing need to buy something?

Oz regulator “welcomes” debate on limiting net neutrality

Ole Juul

Re: net neutrality

"A better user experience" is indeed not something which another person, or in this case company, is able to define. Of course there is always the fundamental idea that my opinion is better than yours, and it would appear that Telstra is of that persuasion. Also, them saying that VoIP should take precedence is just pants. If I am looking up some web site so I can get the number of the doctor's office, or similar, then is that less important than your evening chat with your girlfriend? Argue that one however you wish, the only good solution is going to be to treat all packets equally.

Mali to give away .ML domains for free

Ole Juul

For how long?

How long can one have one of these domain names? If people can just register a bunch of them and keep them forever, then all the shorter ones will be gone, whether active or not. I think this will end up like Hotmail addresses and even Microsoft will be lucky to get "microsoft1975.ml".
