CloudFlare to launch its own 'high security' web domain registrar

Ole Juul

Re: El Reg is a customer of CloudFlare and uses its content-distribution network.

"I quite regularly visit sites protected by CloudFlare over Tor, and have done so within the last couple of days."

Yes, I'm aware that they've recently changed the captcha so as to be easier. They used to be completely insolvable. Now they often work, though I just now checked and it took me about 5 tries. In any case, it makes a clear statement that CloudFlare and The Register do not support good security and wish to discourage those who do. Shame on them.

Ole Juul

Re: El Reg is a customer of CloudFlare and uses its content-distribution network.

"you can login and turn it off."

In that case I wish El Reg would do that.

Ole Juul

El Reg is a customer of CloudFlare and uses its content-distribution network.

And I wish they wouldn't. It has not improved service for me and is just another link to go wrong. Also, I can no longer recommend El Reg articles to my security oriented friends because CloudFlare blocks Tor connections. They need to fix that.

What do you mean I shouldn't use that phone book? Seriously, most people don't even know there is any lookup involved and happily accept whatever they get. Yes, we do need more education.

Ole Juul

Party like it's 2008

I have most machines patched now. Interestingly, one server provider sent me an e-mail saying not to worry, they're going to automatically patch for all clients. I would have done it myself but that's probably a wise move on their part.

Even Google is abandoning Google+

Ole Juul

Re: "Be careful from wild deadly animals"

"Seriously can't understand the downvoting (or your concern). Gmail, hangouts,... yes. But G+?"

My concern is that all Google products which require logging in, are part of the same family and the information which is gathered is all in the one profile. This is not good. I don't log into Google and I obfuscate my identity on a regular basis. I know I'm far from anonymous, and only a little bit private, but I don't put much effort into it either. Just enough to strike an acceptable balance between what I'd like and what I can get.

Ole Juul

Re: "Be careful from wild deadly animals"

"Remember, this has nothing to do with privacy since you're sharing the info in the first place...."

I recognize that privacy is hard to maintain, but I don't think that I should just give up.

Helpdesk? I have a software problem. And a GRIZZLY BEAR problem

Re: Bears vs. alligators+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Where I live here in BC we have bears every fall. They come for the apples and people's garbage. I don't get very close to them when they're really big but they're not too dangerous if you're not threatening. Here's a medium sized one (about 300 lbs.) munching apples in the tree in front of my house.

LA hospital coughs up $17,000 to free PCs held to ransom by hackers

Ole Juul

Re: Something fishy

Doesn't sound like someone did the maths wrong. I found what is so far the only relevant comment on the matter from the hospital CEO.

"The reports of the hospital paying 9000 Bitcoins or $3.4 million are false. The amount of ransom requested was 40 Bitcoins, equivalent to approximately $17,000."

(link to pdf here)

The question now is who came up with the 9000 Bitcoins figure, and why.

Ole Juul

Something fishy

There is no mention of communication with the perpetrators, yet the ransom went from $3.6M down to $17K. How did that happen?

Re: when was the bug created

It seems there's some history starting in 2000 with a vuln which was apparently fixed in 2013 for version 2.18. I just checked a freshly updated Debian system and it is running a much old version. I guess there is some good reason to keep using the older versions if that's what Debian has been doing. Can someone here explain this?

Net narks phishing AlphaBay drug logins in clever redirect attack

Ole Juul

Re: Who are the "net narcs"?

"My impression that these are just a different level of scum who have no intent on tattling on anyone."

That's how I'm reading it, but it's not clear since the traditional meaning of "narc" is (as you say) generally a branch of law enforcement.

Ole Juul

Who are the "net narcs"?

If ever you wanted proof there is no honour among thieves, this scam proves it

I had to look back over the article and the only way I can read this is that the "net narcs", who are the ones pulling this scam, are thieves. Is that intentional, or is the message a bit garbled?

Silent Nork satellite tumbling in orbit

Ole Juul

Re: No telemetry

"Unless the conclusion we've drawn ("we're not in it for satellite launches") was the exact message they specifically wanted to send."

Whatever they're into, collecting data in order to learn and improve is prudent. To not do that is a foolish way to develop something. If they're advanced enough to send a rocket into space they will know that.

Ole Juul

No telemetry

I'm surprised they didn't want to transmit even the most rudimentary data. At a basic level this is really cheap to implement nowadays. They could even have been sending fake data just to make it at least look like it had some more capability. In any case, no data at all makes me think that they don't actually have any plans to develop this much further.

Are Indians too stupid to be trusted with free Internet?

Ole Juul

Re: It would be the same anywhere

Here in Western Canada I see people with perfectly good internet connections get introduced to Facebook by well meaning friends trying to "teach them the internet". That appears to kill their wider internet experience which one would hope they would move on to participate in. For some reason Facebook seems to block their progress. I'm not sure how to explain this in terms of this article because these people are definitely not poor, but it would indicate to me that it is not a good idea to start people off with a Facebook experience.
