WD hopes biz barons will grab its new 4TB data tubs

jai

But, Hitachi do a 4TB external drive for 170 quid - people have been buying those, ripping them out of their enclosures and putting them in their servers.

I know, not enterprise level, but that's a massive price difference between pro and home use isn't it?

iPhone 5: the fab slab to grab

jai

Re: I must be missing something...

I've always found the Google Maps app on iOS5 is excellent (and I use it a lot). I have no intention to upgrade to a poorer experience.

but the point of the article is that you should really be comparing the maps app on iOS6 to the maps app on iOS1 - or rather, the very first time that google release maps.google.com to the world.

Re: Tax

and 20% on £11.99 is only a couple of quid.

So if it was tax free, they'd be charging us £9.59, which you just know they'd round up to £9.99 anyway.

The lack of a physical product to print, combine into a book and ship to distributors _must_ save the publishing companies more than just 2 quid a book doesn't it?

Fuming fanbois flood 'flimsy iPhone 5 Wi-Fi' forum

jai

Re: inaccurate headline

I thought the article made that perfectly clear. The headline section that you're referring to is in quotes, further clarified in the article text as being the title of the forum on the Apple discussion site. If the whinging fanbois get it wrong, why should they be misquoted?

But that's not the case. The forum title is "iPhone 5 wifi issues" (as mentioned within the article).

But the headline quotes this as "flimsy iPhone 5 Wi-Fi"

Anna has taken the liberty of capitalising and hyphenating the word wifi AND adding the word 'flimsy' to the front in order to further her own anti-Apple agenda. If she's not going to quote the name of the forum correctly in the headline, then why bother quoting it at all, and instead could accurately represent the facts within the headline, instead of using 'iPhone 5' to artificially draw in clicks and Google search results.

As you say, the article itself is fine - it's the headline i've taken exception to as that's where the errors are.

jai

inaccurate headline

new iPhone 5s as well as iPads and older iPhones

So actually, it's an iOS6 issue then, not iPhone 5 specifically?

Such poor reporting is to be expected in the hoi poloi presses, but this is a technical news website, one would hope that the reporter was at least a little bit technically literate to understand these things.

Apple forecast to sell 8m iPhone 5s next weekend

Re: What irks me...

WOW! That was only up for a couple of minutes

or, instead of it being fanbois down voting you out of blind loyalty, could it, perhaps, be people down voting you because you're post was complete rubbish.

what are you suggesting, that Apple should have pre-built 20million iPhone 5 units and then sat around on them, hoping they'd eventually sell them all? and in the mean time, stop production until those are sold and then have to start up the production lines all over again?

everyone goes on and on about Apple being arrogant, yet the criticise them for erring on the side of caution in their initial production runs.

yes, i agree, the publicity it generates does not hurt. and it's a publicity wave that every single iPhone launch has ridden. But equally, it's laughable to suggest that they should have over-estimated the number of units to produce and then incurred the costs of sitting on unsold stock.

Apple iPhone 5 hands-on review

WTF?

Re: its rubbish

"Yep, same old UI."

windows did a pretty big UI overhaul with Vista - that was a remarkably successful example of what a good idea it is to change the UI that everyone loves. In fact, microsoft must have been so pleased with the results because they've gone even further with win8 and totally changed all the bits that user liked about their old UI.

yep, AC @13:02 is absolutely correct, totally changing the UI is the best thing any company could do

New iPod nano and touch: Lightning strikes again

jai

Re: I've said it elsewhere - accessories/docks FFS

less rev share? what about all the adapters that they are going to sell? what about all the new usb cables that everyone is going to buy because adapters will be annoying.

actually, i dunno that the adapter will be that much of a problem. The old 30-pin connector generally has quite a good connection to the iDevice. I suspect it'll prove to be a tougher connection than the new Lightening connector provides, and so the adapter will remain connected to your lead or peripheral device and so you're experience of just plugging in the device will remain the same.

and lastly - you may or may not be right about how few El Reg readers have an iTouch/iPod/iPhone as a primary device, but also, El Reg readers (and techy types) are not the core demographic of Apple's customers by a very long way. If we all /ragequit over this, i doubt Apple will even not the fluctuation in their monthly sales charts

weird - of all the iPhones i've owned, i've never, ever, had a need to swap the battery.

It used to be, before Apple came on the scene, that if you had a small pocket computer then you or anyone else could write programs for it and you could run them on your machine that you owned without asking the people who had made it.

you know, you can get the SDK for free. you can write apps for yourself to your hearts content.

hypocrisy of the human race

When Top Gear went to Africa and left tire tracks across the Makgadikgadi Pan, there was outcry and calls for the show to be taken off the air (again).

shame

I'd love a device where FreeView, VirginMedia, or whatever, were just apps alongside 4oD, iPlayer, etc, and YouTube, Netflix and streaming from my desktop machine. Ideally, an interface that did away with channel numbers and just presented me a way to browse everything that's showing live right now, or switch to a different app to stream from iPlayer or whoever.

South Korea probes 'mobe patent bully-boy' Samsung

jai

Re: Chilling effects on innovation

But then, someone else's tech that achieves the same result in a sufficiently different manner to not infringe upon your patent does become part of the standard and world+dog uses that tech instead of yours, and pays them a license for it instead of you.

Having principles is all very well, but it doesn't pay the bills or put food on the table.

Apple eyes $$$ iDevice adapter bonanza

jai

the thing is..

...the third party usb-to-30pin-iphone leads i've tried over the years have all been rubbish. cheaper, yes, but soon fail and require replacing. whereas the Apple branded ones i've either got with the iDevices or bought to replace the crap 3rd party ones, are all still working.

so, yes, i'll happily pay Apple 6 quid an adapter, i'll probably buy two, because in the long run, that's cheaper than having to buy six that are made by a third party which then fall apart after a month.

it seems Samsung are not content with making phone with ridiculously tall and wide screens, they're gotta push for the depth axis as well.

Are they trying to get back to the size of mobile 'brick' phones from the 80s?

or possibly Samsung have taken the art of coping Apple's ideas a step too far and this timed copied the spoof instead of an actual product:

Apple Mac OS X Server for Mountain Lion review

jai

Server != Enterprise

Just because it has Server in the name, doesn't mean this is exclusively for Enterprise.

As people have said, it's a very cheap, very easy way to provide server type services for the home user and the small business team. Yes, there's more feature-full ways of doing it, but equally, they require a greater level of knowledge and maintenance attention, possibly a dedicated person. This provides a way to bring server functionality into your home or office without a large cost of hardware, software and hiring someone with server experience.

Jury awards Apple $1bn damages in Samsung patent case

jai

Are you sure that television manufactures aren't already paying licenses to someone for remote controls and on/off switches? Just because it's obviously doesn't mean that someone didn't have to research and develop it in the past and so deserves to get paid for their work.

Anyway, it's not that Apple don't have to pay Samsungs patent license, it's that they're already paying for them via someone else who's already licensed them from Samsung. Samsung were trying to get paid twice for the same license here.

jai

Even at this size, the damages are token. They'll neither cripple Samsung nor make much difference to Apple's balance. But they are sizeable to make other manufacturers take note. No ones going to be copying anyone in the near future, and hopefully everyone's interfaces now become more individual and innovative

jai

Re: Fees, fees and fees, the lawyers game just love them mounting fees. The law? What is that?

But there also a separate case heard in South Korea last week. By your logic, Samsung had home field advantage in that case, but only managed to scrape a draw.
