The article was biased but not totally without ground though.

If you only need to encap/decap at Layer 2, then when you have trillions of them then there will be a substantial benefit compare to Layer 3.

Total ethernet frame lossless is a dream but extremely high availability can be achieved if the ethernet switch uses store-and-forward (needless to say minor increases in latency) which means it is nearly achievable.

Without the IP factor, you won't have to worry about IPv6 or routing, but you do need Layer2 knowledge and VLAN/trunking/STP etc...

iSCSI would perhaps become a tool for lower end market, whereas FCoE for mid market where performance and budget are both crucial.
