Rumor rubberizes iPhone 3.0

jon

lots of fantasy, but......

what about blue-tooth file transfer??? goto gsmarena and get the full specs!!!

and does no-one STILL want to use a memory card so they can swap out their 16 gig media collection????

nokia's 5800 and n97 knocking spots off it..... :)

Black hole swallows Barbarella rehash

Re: If...

I think they actually made that a porn movie.. yes, some guy actually rented the 'vomit comet' (it's a large aircraft, that goes into a special deep dive, to simulate zero gravity! - the usual results give it the name! :) )

jon

Blasmeme...

so you first saw it in 1987??? it was released in 1968, very progressive for its time... and yes, there are 'body parts' visible (in the starting credits), I recorded it from SKY a few years ago.... :D

jon

remakes...

going by the hopeless remake of 'Day the World Stood Still' ... (too much FX, not enough message..) - it's most likely why they canned it....

Check out 'Masters of Science Fiction : Awakening' - definitely inspired by the original Day the World Stood Still - If they had used that script, it would have been much better!

Carphone Warehouse buys Tiscali UK

jon

@SRS..

simple reason, hotmail is such a giant spam-magnet, and MS dont give a damn about it!!

use a decent one like gmail, I use it cos its far better at stopping spam!

jon

hmmmm

yes, do not go there if you want to download gigs of stuff.....

BUT if you are just an average user who thinks 150Mb is very large, you just want cheap phone & BB....

If you are smart enough to USE THE TT FORUM you will get your problems solved in one or two days, for free, without wasting hours... :)

Opera chief: Microsoft's IE 8 ‘undermines’ web standards

jon

RE: re: Opera Insignificant

... because Opera does not seem to care... :( :( :(

they spend a lot of time and energy on their 'fantastic feature' - we were hoping for something REALLY great......

And they release 'speeddial'.... to yawns all round, and some hope that they may improve on it...

but no, it is still just a 'tacked on' thing that activates when you get a 'new page'...

Now the idea has been 'hijacked' by FF, they have made it better and much more versatile, and still pleas to opera staff to do add this level of functionality seem to fall on deaf ears....

it is no wonder opera's share remains so low......

jon

Oh, and before you say I'm 'bashing opera'....

I LOVE Opera! - yes, BUT do tell, WHY does FF do almost all sites WITHOUT having to pretend it is 'something else' ????

Fuzzy Wotnot 's position is so true - Instead of web designers using their knowledge to make a website, only needing a good texteditor, etc, they are only using MS tools to make a website without any forethought of design, so are 'trapped' in the MS way from the start ....

and of course they are too lazy to test in any other browser - they only test in FF due to the thousands of FF fans that will complain...

jon

derrrrr...

yes, if Opera sold their browser MUCH more fiercely than they do currently, they may still have a chance..... but they still act like fanboy linux users....

Look at Firefox - yes, it has not got as many 'security' feature, cannot 'pretend' to be another browsr, etc, etc, but fanatical support has pused it right to the top..

Storage breakthrough could bust density record

jon

@Christopher Ahrens (more..)

and BTW, 'powerful' in those days, would be useless today!!

resolutions of 1900 x 1200 were the realms of fantasy!! (for a PERSONAL computer..)

**nobody** thought you would need more than 64M of ram...

jon

@Christopher Ahrens

well way back in the last century :D they never thought they would see a powerful PC for less than £2000!!!

IBM even said that people would not trust the reliability of a computer built with such parts!!!

And where are they now??? NOT selling computers, thats what!!!

jon

@AC 22nd Feb 00:59

finally some sense... they did say in the article that 'finding a read/write head' would be the next obstacle... :P

Like a lot of tech, they may well be 'dumped' when found to be too expensive/complicated, a new tech is found, more efficient ways of using old tech is found (they are still improving plasma & LCD), or the sponsor 'gives up' for political or finance reasons... (SEDs, due to better LCDs..)

Seek time???? - well I wonder what those ancient 1G HD's did... quite slow compared to today...

SSDs a few years ago weren't that fast or reliable either... But they are now good enough to replace HDs...

Co-op weighs into battle to save honeybees

jon

they're all aliens anyway....

ER, NO, that was a wasp... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wasp_colony.jpg

A honey bee has 'fur ' round the thorax, and more subtle markings..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bee

from a producers viewpoint, a giant bee would have been much more difficult to do - the fine, clear lines of a wasp are easier on the computer power...

Apple gets censory on iBoobs'... ass

jon

forget youtube....

they are just running scared of anything that they could vaguely be blamed for!!!

they are too 'infamous' , everyone goes there, so slightest hint of it gets the need to verify that it cannot get 'accidentally' viewed...

The big laugh is, if you google for it, you dont even need to register!!!! - I found this.. :D :D

http://i.gizmodo.com/5133258/nsfw-wobble-iphone-app-adds-boob-jiggle-to-real-boobs-is-approved

But come ON, guys!!!! It takes minutes to register using any gmail account, 5 secs to login, and you can see the vid straight away! (unlike some sites that need 12 hours waiting time, or a PROPER email...)

Red Dwarf finally returns to Earth

jon

and the REAL news is......

after googling past all those that had just done <ctrl-c> <ctrl-V> , I finally found a bit of the REAL truth...

who me, cynical??

http://blog.ryanajarrett.com/tv/red-dwarf-back-to-earth/

gives it proper, and even almost up to date pics of the crew! :D

Breakthrough paint blocks top-end spectrum

jon

RE:Thermite?

Thermite is not Volatile, unlike nitroglycerin... It needs a spark to start it!

If you watch Brainiac, you will know 'exploding paint' - perfectly safe when wet, but when it has dried, still fairly safe, unless you are right next to it!! - about as dangerous as the 'bang' in a xmas cracker!!

Unless you have a very bad heart condition...

Kamikaze ballooning Brazilian soars to Darwin Award

jon

no, priests ARE included...

how do ya think we get more of 'em??? yes they do marry....

- and for the pedantic, humorless people.... NO, it is not that easy to get a Darwin's award...

Its not as easy as stepping in the road without looking....

you have to be very organised, to do a complex task straight away with whatever is to hand, and forget one vital thing that a bit of common sense will provide..... like reading the manual, or thinking about safety....

Strangely enough, these people DO survive, 90% of the time!!! and go on to do even crazier things....

pedantic people will NEVER 'get it' because they have such boring, planned, adventureless lives....

Tabloid girl's jubs freeze at -130°C

@ Jon, by jon :D

quote:

"The default search engine is Google. (And maybe the homepage is too?) So Google pay them tonnes of money for driving traffic to Google's search adverts."

but that figure is rather small compared to the licensing deals...

jon

@JB

erm, do you mean a new, *empty* tab/page?? Ctrl T, click on empty tabspace, rightclick on tab... been there for ages...

- or just open a bookmarked page in a new tab?? just open the 'bookmark pulldown' and click the bookmark,

or better, press F4, and rightclick for many actions.. (this menu stays put, no matter what you do on the page, even if it is all minimized... )

- or are you just another anal, who cannot forget your beloved FF or IE???

jon

Its an ALPHA!!

- and yes, when the last pre-pre-release alpha of FF came out, there were many things wrong with that, too...

Opera 9 may have 'had' spell-check, BUT it did not work unless you downloaded a few other things first!! V10 works straight out of the box...

Oh, and opera is making PLENTY of money from licensing deals... G'wan, google it...

- its the internet model, guys... you dont really need much money to 'stay in existence'...

and yes, the 'duff' note... there is a quite a bit of dissension here...

http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=258333

Myself, I blame opera's diminished ratings on them thinking too much on tidiness, style & security, instead of *making it compatible* with the strange and unusual webs out there....

'Houses of the Holy' anyone???

Just going back through my old LPs.... ah, good old days... :)

Boss frogmarches bound employee to cop shop

jon

The best way is softly, softly....

If I was the boss of this company, and discovered his deeds... I would simply sue him for 'attempted embezzelment' :) - He would think he had escaped, until he gets it..

- or if I wanted to vent my anger, I would just walk up to him and pass him the 'writ' innocently, and when he is holding it say 'you are served' to see his horrified expression!! :D

(Hey correct my legal knowledge if it is more hollywood than reality! :) )

jon

@ James Hughes...

the problem with the story is, who was the noisiest?? - I will bet it was your mates, and the club owner has a bigger profile with the police...

- It would be VERY different, if after the assault, you did NOT go to the front desk, but straight to a policeman (first making sure you are SOBER and looking respectable!!), and report the club - the police would then treat your case with respect!

Beeb to cut the f**king swearing

RISC daddy conjures Moore's Lawless parallel universe

jon

AC 28 Nov 03:20 is right...

What all CPU engineers need to start working on is a multicore design, that will ALSO include some way to take the simplest program, and spread the load evenly across the cores...

Is this possible??? this will then enable all the basic stuff to run faster, without complex expensive stuff...

'The market' is tied up by the salesmen, who keep pushing the numbers... they just take the clockspeed, multiply that by number of cores, giving a nice big number to impress joe average... sucessfully, due to large sales pushing the price down, and single cores either dissapear, or become 'uneconomical' due to low sales, and lack of boards that will take them!!

- then he gets that home, and get even more dissatisfied at the real speed...

you may say different, but try walking into PCWORLD and asking for a pentium1.. even DABS has none... and I would not want second hand stuff...

Virgin Media calls foul on web speed testers

jon

@ Alexander

See my comment 13th October 14:31 ... The MUX is inside the cabinet in the street, that converts the fibre channel to coax, that goes to each home.. Fibre To The Home is for the future, and will depend on it being economic or not...

"cable too old" er, no, when I got this house in '95, I got C&W, the cheapest... this was then upgraded to TW, and now VM... even if TW did replace the cable, that is still about 10 years... and I have had no problems getting 10 M... again replacing bad sections will depend on economics... If you dont support it, it wont happen...

No, d/l ing a file will be subject to how congested that part of the net was, and the the speed of the modem it used... speedcheckers only test the 'one off' speed and latency, what you need is Netmeter from www.metal-machine.de/readerror/ It will help you track what happens to speed over time...

"cant cope with the bandwidth" I think you will find that EVERYONE is getting this problem, due to too many greedy people wanting to download lots of stuff for next to no cost!!

check my comment 12th October 13:26 .... I think you will find VM's track record (considering the short time it has been operating) is much better that BTs... BT has only had since the START of 'cheap internet' to get its act together - mid '90s I think.. and it has had the whole telephone network runnning for decades before that....

jon

@Anonymous Coward (Posted 13th October 2008 21:05

no you will never get satisfaction with a company that has too many customers!!! go to a smaller company, that has space left.... untill it get too big....

jon

TeeCee, you need to read Rolf Harris...

and MODS! please can you reduce the 'time to live' of the posts to MUCH less than about 24hrs???

"fiber optic BB( eh so what is the old coax thing running into my house then )"

Its currently FFTC - Fibre To The Cabinet, then coax to the home..

- the next step will be FTTH - Fibre To The Home..

other moaners who think anything else using BT lines are better, Rolf Harris does not think so...

and yes, MU, virgin does do server work, meaning a loss of acces for a few days.. last time that happened to me, my net came back upgraded from 4 to 10 meg for FREE.. :)

I would bet that would take a lot longer on a BT line -(BT says line will upgrade, ISP happy, tells users... a week later and no upgrade, ISP embarrased, users angry and leaving... BT still twiddles it's thumbs, while disgruntled badly paid staff 'walk off the job' ... ISP still being 'blanked' by BT(they dont know why the line is dead either...) - workers eventually get back to work, so its all handed back to the complaints dept, its not their problem, ISP tries to pick up the pieces...

VM has it own cables, own exchanges, own staff, does not have to deal with countless 'middlemen' just to clear a line fault!!!

jon

we need a GREED test.... :(

Shaddup all you whingers!!! I think you need to find out the REAL cost of transferring data!!

you will be shocked to find it is in the 3 figure range... your moans are just like a pedant who gets caviar for 'only £2' and then moans that it is not the best quality! - to do that you have to spend much more...

speed tests can always be wrong, if they 'just load a file' - it is like trying to test the max speed of a supercar on a motorway, at rush hour!! - this is why *motorways* have a CAP!! - this is why the POLICE will fine you, or even stop you, for going at excessive speed, without care for other users, and also why no-one has yet built a motor way with *10* lanes each way!!! :D

If speed is really important for you, why not get your own T3 line??? YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!

Proper tests will use a special server (like testing a super car on a private race track) - and so avoid most of the congestion by **all** the other PCs using the net...

jon

example of some tests...

http://www.speedtest.net/ can use any server *in the world* for this, and give the most accurate speed and ping - it regularly gives me 8 to 10 M on my VM cable line..

http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest - is the worst! on the SAME line, only a minute or two later, http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1

gives a massive *seven* servers, from NJ to florida....

and it seems to think my speed is about 1.3 Meg... :/ (SF)

- and yes, I tested with speedtest.net, SF server, got 4 Meg!!

It shows how things can be affected...

-

jon

To iain podger ..

I think you will find the ONLY way to get your massive downloads, is to change to a much smaller ISP... and hope that it or its 'parent' (check http://www.ispreview.co.uk for who ) does not get TOO big, so it has to limit its output, due to too many people using a limited resource - yes, it may be 'limited' to thousands of terabytes, but divide that by the number of users, and it starts getting small.. :(

Porn, abuse, depravity - and how they plan to stop it

jon

damn prudes, thats what is the problem!

I think the lack of / arguing over the XXX domain is due to these prudes arguing... :(

- cannot teach sex to 5 year olds! - too shocking, promotes promiscuity!!

- cant have the pill - it will 'promote promiscuity' ..

- one domain for sex??? that means people will use it, promoting all that bad stuff....

- '10 yr olds to get jab to help prevent cervical cancer' - oh no! that means more promiscuity!

(no, it is mainly genetic, if your mother suffered from it, it means you may have a better chance to be *able* to be happily married with children...)

- and guess what? because kids dont know how it is done, they then unexpectantly find themselves pregnant or worse at 12... Most dutch kids know this at 5, so know what NOT to do!!

jon

@ - reply to @This could all go underground (too many ACs here..)

'going underground' is AREADY happening in many less liberal places around the world...

- and as for the UK, I think that the gov. and police hardly have a clue to use it, use it in the wrong way, and many others are just 'over the top' ... like the mother who went to collect her holiday photos, and was arrested for child porn, due to naked pics of her daughter at the beach....
