@Chris Bidmead

wikipedia does itself claim to be an encyclopedia... I know this because I looked it up on wikipedia and therefore it MUST be true*.

"Welcome to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit."

or has "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page" been circlejerked by our very own el Reg?

support for PDF is actually good news

at last, with support for PDF in a mainstream product the herd will finally grasp that an Adobe PDF document is neither "tamper proof" or "read only"... of course this'll lead Adobe to enhance the standard so their Reader won't recognise MS-Word generated doc's as genuine, but it's a start.

Is it my imagination or were all the competing formats caused by scope creep from Word Processing into Desktop Publishing?

What has El Reg been drinking?

You quote a range 29g to 43g of Ethanol per day for men and then go on to claim that this is equivalent to drinking three pints of "beer" a day. If we take the upper value of this range, 43g, and convert it to a volume (the density of EtOH is 0.789g/ml) we get 54.5ml, now three pints is 1704ml (3 times 568) which means that El Reg's "beer" has a *maximum* strength of 3.2% by volume. Whatever the clarity of thinking this beer gives it wouldn't be popular down my local boozer.

Now whilst I whole heartedly deplore the wrong conclusions being drawn from scant and unsuitable evidence to back up knee-jerk headline grabbing legislation of the sort that NuLabour crave so deeply I cannot help but think you are deliberately distorting the evidence and attempting the colour the readers thoughts. This is beneath you lot over at El Reg towers, I expected more.

@"step on" By Greg Andrews

I didn't think that was a "UK'ism" but here comes my definition

"step on" means to dilute for the purpose of obtaining greater sale revenue. The aldulterant can be anything from harmless glucose or water (like "bulking" chicken breast in holland by churning/soaking with water to increase the sale weight of the breast pieces - illegal in the UK, so it's done on the continent), to the harmful scouring powder or battery acid.

Usually applied to hard "Class A" drugs - as in "a bunch of smack heads turned dead in glasgow yesterday when it turned their skag had been stepped on with drain cleaner". Rather than the far more frightening "a bunch of helpless babies turned up dead in China after their milk had been stepped on with an industrial nitrogenous chemical".
