US county named 'area of outstanding natural stupidity'

The point is that he didn't make you safer, and mortgaged your children's and grandchildren's income to pay on a completely ineffective splurge on public services.

Not to mention being a completely authoritarian bastard. RIPA anyone?

The only good thing Labour did while in power was to give the bank of England independence. And they even fucked that up by excluding housing from the inflation measure, directly contributing to the boom and bust.

Indeed. stopping the olympic shooting teams from training in the UK really helped cut gun crime.

I'm sure there are lots of things that are hindrances to their investigations, both for reasons of cost and potential delay. Habeas corpus, a judicial system, PACE, people being allowed to move around, not having CCTV in everyone's bedrooms (although that could be a potentially profitable public service. I digress).

McGregor and Thornton are clearly unfit for public office.

bit pointless

What's the point of advertising to people who are too skint or too tight to pay for mobile broadband? Surely they're likely to be in the same position when it comes to buying whatever you're advertising?

If you have trouble dividing metric measurements (i.e. 10s and 100s) by 2 or 3 (to a practical accuracy), then it doesn't matter whether beer's sold in pints or litres, you've had enough.

Trying to change the measurements is a complete waste of time though, since it attempts to solve a non-existent problem. Clearly we've managed to fix the political system and the economy while I was having a post-prandial nap

Indiana cops arrest violent 6-year-old

Burkhard Kloss

Surely if teachers can't deal with a six year old, they should be sacked for incompetence in public office?

After living here in rainy blighty for twenty years: Either they stopped too early, or this simply doesn't work.

Ted Nugent fined for failing to kill bear

Re: @Greg J Preece

That's why in some places - e.g. Germany - you get fined in "day rates" - 1/365th of your annual income. At least in theory, that means the fine hurts everyone the same way, regardless of how rich they are

I'm pretty sure that Rick Santorum has said a few things which are homophobic enough to get him prosecuted on the east side of the pond - any chance of getting him prosecuted over here?

Thought not.

In the meantime, anyone sad enough to look for US TV shows online since they haven't come out over here yet will probably watch them again when they finally cross the ocean, and then buy the DVD box set.

> It’s banker’s greed that led to all this in the first place, and until we tackle the problems of unregulated greed driven banking, then this problem is not going to solved and will probably reoccur.

Because the bankers FORCED the Greeks and Spanish and Portugese governments to borrow all that money? Or the Irish to invest like mad in property? [The Irish are a different kettle of fish from the others... they just made a monumentally stupid decision by not letting their banks fail and instead guaranteeing them with taxpayer money]

> The regan/thatcher light touch free market policies have failed, just as communism has failed

Ah yes, Thatcher was famous for running up huge government deficits wasn't she? [ Reagan did actually run up a huge deficit, despite talking about a smaller state, but then he was trying to outspend the Soviets]

risk

EC

While your statement

"If you short a share, how much can you lose when prices go up? In the first case your losses are limited to the value of the share when you bought it (limited liability) but in the second, your losses are potentially unlimited."

is technically true, de facto large jumps are much more likely to the downside than to the upside.

And I don't think Dominic argued that naked shorts are less risky, just that a long-short strategy is less risky.
