I'm a gud Murikan!

I think I'll take a few minutes today to get a few extra house keys made and drop a set off to the city, county, and state police. Better yet, I'll just leave a set fastened to my front door. Along with a copy of 1984 in case they've forgotten anything.

Batteries are so heavy, said user. If I take it out, will this thing work?

I worked for a small company in the early ‘oughts’ that became bought out by Verizon. There are two phone numbers embedded in their system that I will own in perpetuity. No, you may not know what they are.

Re: I've got a picture somewhere

I did a similar thing to myself recently after making a trip to Colorado to get some of that industrial strength left-handed cigarette material. After consuming about a third of a not large one, I decided I needed to clean the evidence off the keyboard. In a dimly light closet there’s two similar cans, both with red straws sticking out of them…

I think my typing speed went up 20-25 wpm for the next few days.

Free Windows 10 upgrade: Time is running out – should you do it?

Talamasca

Grandma needs this why?

I’m sorry but your 2 most compelling reasons for upgrading to Win 10 are how file copies are handled and command prompt properties options? Exactly what % of Windows users does this serve?

Re: I'd try Linux mobile

In my somewhat unique profession, I do route surveys for oversized loads. Which means my contracted employer gives me dimensions of an object that needs to be transported over public thoroughfares, from here to there, and it's my job to determine how to get it there.

I still use an LG Nexus 4, from what, two years ago? I can print maps, routes, location pics, Google Earth, and anything else I want or need from this phone, in 99% + of anywhere in this country.

Roku flashes $50 HDMI TV web dongle at anyone sick of Google's stick

Info for clarity

Roku offers no pay-per-view that I'm aware of. It asks for a credit card number when you create an account, but it is not required.

With the Roku 3 box, you add the Plex channel to your channel list and add the Plex Media Server to your pc. It works flawlessly. Alternatively, RARflix is a turbo charged Plex clone that works with the Plex Media Server. I assume the dongle would work the same.

The Roku remote app for Android delivers way more functionality than the included remote. It allows you to play media stored on your phone, limited voice navigation, allows the use of the phone's keyboard searches and account information entry as opposed to using the arrow rocker to enter one character at a time.

Linux to spend eternity in shadow of 'little blue E'

Same song

People just want their stuff to work. They don't care about kernels, builds, KDE. It's Greek to them.

As long as the Linux distro's require a more than basic tech-saviness, just for installation, Linux will never go anywhere.

You want it more widespread? All you fanboi's, make the installation idiot proof. People do not know nor do the care what partition is. Or dual-booting.

For me! I have Ubuntu and Open Solaris but rarely do use them because of limited driver support for modems. Have put Linux on at least a half dozen machines and the problem is always the same, no drivers for the modems. I neither have the time or desire to go replace all that. Some kind of open source wall if you will.

So, make the installation relatively painless. And better driver support for modems. Until that happens, continue whining about it in your IRC chats

“… but it doesn't logically follow that more of it out there means more kids are being abused”.

Nor is it logical to assume that paedophiles just miraculously stopped abusing more children simply because it doesn’t follow your train of thought.

Hurricane Ike snuffs out Galveston webcam

Talamasca

Misconceptions

Sorry to be anti-climactic here Mr. Haines, but a hurricanes wrath is a gradual process.

It is not uncommon for an area to lose power hours before the hurricane ‘actually’ comes ashore. Galveston had to have been battered for a significant amount of time before these webcams (Galveston as a whole) lost power, fourteen to sixteen hours before Ikes eye wall ‘officially’ hit at around 2am on the 13th.

The eye wall is not a determinating factor as to who loses power and who doesn’t. As witnessed by the hundreds of thousands of people that were flooded, suffered wind damage and/or lost power east from the Galveston/Houston area, back into western Louisiana.

While the eyewall has dangerous conditions associated with it, the outer bands of the storms can cause significant damage in and of themselves. Ikes sheer size caused problems days before land fall, with flooding along Louisiana’s gulf coast south of the New Orleans area. You could follow the flooding and/or power outages west from there, without Ike ever officially making land fall in Louisiana.
