BlackBerry CEO: Reports of firm's death 'greatly exaggerated'

Tommy Pock

Re: Not 'Greatly Exaggerated'

My Pre3 does - but I get your point.

Upgrade time soon and I'm trying very hard not to get a Q10. I really, really want one.

Re: Minecraft

Oolite runs well, Half Life runs perfectly in Wine but you scan forget Minecraft. It just doesn't have the power.

Re: To be encouraged.

Are you me...?

I recently got an old iMac, too. Ran like a dog. I put Tiger on it, updated it, stuck another 256mb of PC133 RAM in it and it runs like new. New in 2005, but still new.

Re: Hackintosh would be cool surely

I've Hackintosh-ed mine, I've got a spare HD with it on somewhere. Works okayish. 60% of the time it'll boot into a wrong-aspect ratio square screen and there's absolutely nothing I can do to get it back. Brilliant when it works, but incredibly annoying when it doesn't.

Tommy Pock

MSI Wind U100 here

Almost exactly the same specs as yours (2GB RAM, 160GB HD).

I use vanilla Ubuntu with mine, because I've become hooked on Unity's contextual search*. I've tried a LOT of other distros, but this one works best with the form factor. It probably doesn't run as fast as you lot reading this would like, but it probably runs better than you'd expect.

Battery life was comical though, coming in at less than an hour, so I sorted that out with a 6000mAh battery from Amazon for 30 quid, which gives me a real life 7 hours use. Also handy as a keyboard tilt because it's bloody massive.

Elementary OS Luna is another OS you might want to look at, it's small and very fast but just too basic for me. It's very well made but looks like a Fisher Price My First Mac.

Yes your son may prefer an iPad but so would mine (he's 15) and he''s quite welcome to buy one from his own money. When he's earned some.

I'm happy with my little laptop which cost me, new battery included, £120. It'd be very difficult indeed to get that much functionality for so little money any other way.

*and Compiz's Wobbly Windows. I'm a sucker for wobbly windows.

Tommy Pock

Elementary OS Luna has done away with its minimize button as well, and it works. Kind of.

But with that, you can put them back where they're supposed to be (close, minimize, maximize:) with gconf-editor. I don't know if that'll work with Gnome 3

Re: Sponsored curriculum

I've been thinking about this. Egg on buttered toast is seen as a normal healthy breakfast, as is cereal with milk and a light sprinkling of sugar. Perfectly normal.

Using exactly the same ingredients (flour, eggs, milk, sugar), I can make cake.

So I eat cake every morning. You can't argue with science.

Re: Horse, stable door

Same here, I tap the floppy disc icon during a video on this Pre 3 and it saves the .mp4 to my phone. It doesn't harm anyone's business interests, doesn't deprive Google or its partners of advertising revenue, it just means I can save videos at home on wi-fi and watch them while I'm out and about which I wouldn't do using mobile data.

Plus the Pre 3 doesn't show adverts - ever - but we won't tell Google abut that

I want a Q10 - yes, I do - and I asked Vodafone about 6 weeks ago if they'd put one under a desk for me so I can have it in July when I can upgrade, because I was worried Blackberry would have gone bump by then.

I was only half-joking, and Vodafone said no.

They should have taken me a little more seriously, because Blackberry will have probably gone bump by then :(
