Bucks village repels Street View spycar

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Thumb Up

Good on them!

'A Google spokeman told the Citizen that householders were "entitled" to request their properties be removed from Street View, but "only after the picture has appeared".'

No! If I ask for something not be there in the first place, that amounts to the same ultimate goal, not present under any circumstances! Do you understand?

Why can't we have the choice in the first place? I bet if I went stomping residential streets taking snaps for a new internet startup I had just formed, you'd all call Mr Plod and I'd get a good drubbing down the cop-shop before tea-time! 'Cos it's good old friendly Google, everybody's mate, they'd never do anything to hurt us, they're bestest friend a user of the internet could have, the khaki cargo-pants wearing, Apple fanbois, Web v3.0 trendies are all up for it!

NO! They are another huge faceless corporation, just like Uncle Steve Jobs and the Church of Apple and while I use their both Apple and Google services and products, I am still mindful that they don't abuse the trust we all put in them!

Keep 'em peeled!

How gov scapegoats systems for man-made errors

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Alert

@AC - Throw the letter away

Well you're a nice, unfeeling, little shite-hawk aren't you? My father still occasionally gets letters addressed to my late mother who died over 4 years ago, but any reminder of a lost loved one just makes memories flood back. Hopefully you'll grow-up you nasty little 12 year old troll, but I'm not holding my breath!

I do love this attitude these days that computer systems are somehow always right and that a "computer glitch" is the problem. No! No such thing as "computer error"! Systems very rarely make errors, they can't, they operate to do exactly as the software instructs them. With complete twats like EDS and Crapita and their a two-a-penny developers who obviously can't even write a simple, small scale CMS system without ballsing it up, no wonder we all fear Wacky J and her wonderful ID card system and kiddie-DNA databases!

Next-gen SQL injection opens server door

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Alert

Stop it, please!

SQL-Injection can happen to any DB for flips sake! All you need is a muppet with no understanding of the SQLI concept writing frontends with no sanity checks, backing directly onto any DB that accepts SQL, which is almost every DB these days!

I would hazard a guess that the 1/10 figure is probably a lot higher, given the pace at which companies expect developers to code apps these days!

Texas senator wants to ban Vista purchases

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Thumb Up

@AC - Biz specs

Exactly the point re: Vista and Business. Licensing a shed load of desktops is expensive, so you get away with the bare minimum you can on the desktop, enough for O/S, Office, couple of apps, not much else. The odd exception you add another 512M for the screaming PA or manager to shut them up so they can browse and work, but in the main most of us get dumped with a bog standard single CPU 512M/80GB trash pile running XP. Not great., but it's the cheapest there is and it works, most of the time!

Vista comes along and instantly the CPU is not quite good enough and the memory has to be doubled. Fine of Mr/Mrs Home user with a bit of spare cash to make a £20 memory purchase, but not for a business with a minimum of 3000+ desktops to upgrade at lets say £10 a stick of 512M or worse a new £500 desktop machine.

Sorry, but XP works with what we have paid for and the budget will certainly not allow upgrades for the forseeable, especially with Gordo doing his nest to put us all on the dole!

Me I tried Vista, it was OK, nice and shiny. ran everything I tried, but I dumped Windows and now the Lord Jobs is my shepherd at home and the Penguin is my worktime desktop co-pilot!

Can't see Apple doing anything about it

As Jobs has said, they won't cheapen the name by releasing cheaper stuff, even if it was good or not. Expensive clothes are expensive 'cos the label has cachet, the cloth is the cheap denim used in the jeans sold in TESCO for kids at a fiver.

Apple and Jobs pride themselves on selling neat little bundles of tech at over-inflated prices to Muppets ( myself included! ) convincing ourselves we're buying into a brave new world of tech, when in fact we're locked into tech prisons with limited potential, throwaway hardware. Ipods, updated every year. iMac locked box with no upgrade potential. iphone, locked phone with no upgrade potential.

You want a cheap OSX mini? Get a MSI Wind or Acer Aspire One, install OSX, instant £250 OSX mini-top!

Playmobil Bible faces wrath of lawyers

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Alert

It's obvious really!

I don't think Playmobil makers like the fact that their toys are being used in a religious context for the benefit of one religion, Christianity , thus potentially being "seen" as biased against other religions! They won't say it out loud, as the next thing you will have Fanatics making websites showing one set of religious figures abusing other religious figures!

All very pathetic, grown adults moaning about kids toys! Typical of the sort of things that happen when religion, politics of PC vs Apple fanatics get involved!

So from the annihilation of the internet as we know it to something a little more sedate!

Quoted on BBC website ( yes I know a real bastion of informed IT news! )

The Fuzzy Wotnot

All in the name!

I have several email addresses on two domains.

I set up a brand new email address with a simple stub, using just letters and sent a couple of emails to sign up to news websites. I set up another email address using a bizarre combination of random letters and numbers, no more than 10 characters though. Signed up to the same websites.

Within 7 days the first simple email was being hit by about 10-15 spams a day, the other got 1 in week.

Lesson I learned, use a mashup of numbers and letters, seems to keep you clear for a while. As an added precaution I usually change my important email addresses every 6 months anyway, just to be safe.

@Gary!

A man after my heart! Same thing here, haven't watched broadcast TV in years. It's the ads that get me wound up, I start throwing soft toys at the box if I have to sit through more than 30 secs of ads. Now a box that automatically removes the ads, those bloody annoying banners for "What's up next!" and something that automatically stitches the progs back together, so you get all three parts of a TV show in one go. It should have a registered list of celebutards so it will filter out anything with anyone from said list. I might just return to watching TV again.

Things went downhill when they started writing programs to fit 23 minutes, so the other 7 minutes can be used for ad space on commercial channels. I hate the British Broadcasting Communists but at least they have to make progs 29/58 mins long so you get your money's worth!

Dear TV exec, I am not an idiot. I can sit still for more than 90 mins and concentrate on something so please stop breaking the progs up with your stupid little money spinners. I download my TV progs from torrents, because I get all the above, with the exception of the banners, so tough luck you wasted time renting ad space.

"I don't know why we pay our TV licence."

"We don't!"

"What? That makes me a criminal. Right on! Occupying the refectory, so what! This is the real thing!"

And?

No news here! Yes OSS help is flaky at best, but it's written by people who do it a lot of the time as a side project which may interest a few other people, if it takes off, great, if not it languishes unloved in the Freshmeat.net basement!

OSS take it or leave it, all about the choice! Business need to think about that before they try to jump on the OSS open-love, trendy, cost-cutting band-wagon. OSS can be very hard work and you need good, dedicated people, but it can pay off very well if done correctly, Amazon a good example. However most companies I have worked in are, well to put it politely, as cohesive as the behemoth online retailer!

I love OSS but I also accept it's shortfalls, horses for courses!

Everything Stallman says should be taken with a pinch of salt and whether he knows it or not he really only exists to stir up debate, not just let things be the way they are, 'cos they are. Worm breeds botnet from home routers, modems

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Thumb Down

Hardly surprising...

For you geek inclined, take a stroll around your local IP neighbourhood one evening with a copy of nmap, you will be amazed at what's out there! Unlocked routers, printers, anonymous FTP servers, NAS servers simply hooked up with admin/admin as the login and dozens PC's direct attached to "da net" with all ports ready for the killing, barely hanging in there with their out of fate MS firewall up, giving the illusion of security to the ill fated user on the other side!

This is hardly news, this is just another problem caused by allowing the world and their dog to join "da net". Should be like Radio Ham, you need to prove you have a minimum of understanding before you attach to the network, if using anything more technological that a TV based browser device!

IBM 'in talks' to buy Sun Microsystems

The Fuzzy Wotnot
Thumb Up

Hardly a surprise though is it?

That pony-tailed plank had it coming for yonks, anyone could see that there would only be three options, IBM ( they have the money, but do they have the balls to take it on? ), MS ( unlikely they'd even get anywhere near it with the monopolies comm. on their back ) or a conglomerate of smaller tech firms trying to grab a ready made chunk of the server room market, but would most likely be too much in-fighting amongst anyone to make it work.

Just pay that corp puppet off and put someone in charge with some sensible ideas and some chutzpah to actually make proper decisions. Sun made a big mistake not trying harder to push for a share of that very rich VM hosts market, imagine how many X86 VMs you could run on yer average pukka Sun box?

Power cuts starting already

I live about 3 miles just north of Enfield, North London and I have had several power cuts within the last 6 months some lasting a few minutes, one that went on for over 7 hours. My road lost power then about 2 days later a road about 800 yards away lost power for an hour. Something is not quite right out their in the grid.

I did a quick straw poll around my office and found that at least 75% of the people I asked never turn their machines off. I found that bizarre! I always shut my machines down, except my webserver, more than anything to make sure the curtains don't go up in smoke. You can save a few quid, a couple of 500w power supplies running half the time they normally would, soon makes a little dent in your bills and might save a few penguins.
