I think if you put the Daily Mail down and took off the blinkers, you'd find a massive spread of different types out there "hacking" ( both in the in the Hollywood and true IT sense ). While quite a few I'm sure feel they are lashing out at a world that doesn't "get them", a larger number lead perfectly normal lives often doing far more fun and entertaining things with a healthy circle of real world friends and doing jobs for a living you'd never even think they would do, some not even remotely IT related.

Anything above 10MB is overkill in my book unless your a) an avid gamer who needs as close to zero latency as possible and loads of updates and downloads for said games or b) a thieving git sitting sucking half the media content from "da tubes" via torrents!
I have 10MB VM line and I probably shift a max of 50MB a week, if that! I give Ole Beardy the least amount possible and wait until they bump me up to a faster speed on a free upgrade!

When I'm bored I often port scan my local subnet on the other side of my net connect router. You come across quite a few interesting items, open routers, business webservers ( running IIS ) with ports wide open. However the oddest thing is the quite large number of people who seem to have connected printers directly to their internet connections! Very odd.
I'm not a conspiracy nutter but it's no big stretch of the imagination to wonder if the US Gov have been a bit naughty and not told us the whole truth.

The reason I refuse to use FB, it's just too easy to drop a bombshell and let loose some nasty secret you'd rather keep to yourself.
My Missus uses it to keep in touch with some colleagues and some family, but she's extremely careful how she uses it and what she puts up, she's aware of the risks and often advises others that the least amount of info you put up the better.
I updated from 10.10 and 11.04 keeps crashing and as I have an Nvidia graphics chipset I get the phantom "white windows" bug, maxing a window suddenly blanks it white, resize to get the contents back. Some apps when started from command line, like rdesktop, have no borders and with no running apps bar anymore you can't kill it. I restarted without Unity and things weren't much better. Gone back to 10.10 until this blows over.
Seen lots of forum posts about people dumping Ubuntu over this and checking Fedora and other distros, Canonical need to get some damage limitation done very quickly.

I completely agree with the sentiment, we've rocketed at 1000mph into the glorious light of the new world techno economy, sadly those are in charge of the rocket are not engineers but money men. If the techies were in charge of the rocket we wouldn't have half the cockups we have, we wouldn't be forced to cut corners to keep the shareholders happy.

I loved the fact that I had a natty little screen and fully featured programming language in my pocket, with a usable keyboard, if only they'd been able to network it to the basic mobile phone network and allow data transfer, it would have been unbeatable.

In the case of Apple's Filevault the "encrypted drive" is a virtual disk container, once you log out it starts the clean up cycle that de-frags the container's internal contents and remove all the rubbish, that's an extremely I/O intensive task. I have sometimes sat and waited 30 mins for my machine to shut down after a heavy session of moving lots of stuff about.
They seem like the perfect answer for getting a bit more life out of my laptop but at £350+ for 256GB that's a little pricey for a laptop I paid £600 for 2 years ago. If I can hang on for another 12 months, then hopefully they will have the consumer 1TB SSDs out and this will start to push the 256GB down to more reasonable prices.
I'd love one but just to expensive to justify right now.
