Satnav mishap misery cure promised at confab

Will Derrrick

One government department having to pay another for information is plain daft.

Would this work?

Have OSGB expand the OS OpenData project to create an open and documented 1:10 000 vector map of topography, with layers of roads, streets and landmarks on top. Add another layer on top of rules (for lanes, one way streets etc).

Create a secure and transparent API for councils and third parties to submit changes (either temporary like road closures or flooding, or permanent like making a street one way).

Require all UK Sat Navs to use this map as a base and to provide an easy update mechanism to download regular updates.

Release the map free for non-commercial, low license fee for commercial.

Sat Nav manufacturers can charge for the routing engine and value add (like the "TomTom Route IQ"-style realtime routing information or truck info or overlaying sat imaging etc) on a subscription basis but have to provide the updates to the base map with basic functionality for free.

Have a simple reg-based system and specify the number of years each device has to be update-able for (e.g. Sat Nav with a reg 60, which is second part of 2010, must be provided with updates for at least two years.) Have it printed on the box in a standardized way.

Require all HGVs etc to have an up-to-date Sat Nav system suitable for their vehicle.

Meh

HD-MUX

CurtPalme were selling the MUX-HD HDCP stripper for at least a couple years, it pairs nicely with the BlackMagic Intensity HDMI capture card. Works brilliantly on Sky HD (although it's easier to pull the audio in separately if you're after 5.1 audio.) This is great and all, but it's not really enabling anything new and practical.

Alert

Opposite spin...

If the RAF hadn't grounded the fleet, it'd be spun the other way by some.

"RAF Risks Hero Pilots In Deathtrap Plans For RAF Show Off" shocker where "RAF Bigwigs recklessly endangered the safety of our boys in blue on the very day we were supposed to be celebrating their predecessors. RAF bosses ploughed ahead with the needless flying of the risky Typhoon despite being warned of the problem that's already killed one pilot. This complete contempt for our modern heroes... etc". Sometimes you just can't win.

It would have been hilarious if the Russians had sent another couple of strategic bombers in UK airspace ( http://www.defencetalk.com/russian-planes-intercepted-by-raf-tornados-in-uk-airspace-25307/ ), only to have been turned away by WWII veterans flying Spitfires. That should put the fear of God into them!

WTF?

Mail For Exchange

"Nokia offered a crude Exchange client for Symbian (Mail for Exchange) for years, but has folded the functionality into Nokia Messaging, a subscription email service based on its $430m Intellisync acquisition in 2005. So you can't get decent Exchange access out of the box, for free."

Nokia still offer Mail for Exchange, it's a free download from the Nokia's store (OviStore), it's still current and has seen updates as recently as February of this year. Feel free to check the Release Notes and Admin Guide on the Nokia website, it's got most of the features down including Folders, Remote Wipe and GAL. The noticeable missing features are 2010 support (but supposedly it works) and server-side search. It's not particularly polished and it's not up to WinMo standards, but it's perfectly usable, even on the E71. While not "out of the box" per se, it's pretty damn close considering you open OviStore and download it for free direct to the handset...

HDMI Splitter

There are ways of splitting the audio from the HDMI, a lot of TVs do this for you (and have optical out on the back) but you can get specific devices to do it (such as the Gefen EXT-HDMI-2-DVIAUD or the HDDA52V13 or the wonderful MUX-HD from CurtPalme). It does seem to be somewhat of an oversight though.

XP + SSD

I'll be interested to see how well XP copes with the SSD in this. Hopefully it'll be a lot faster than either SSD that the Linux AA1 ships with, because there's noticable lag under XP on it unless you're running EWF or Supercache etc. Although I love my AA1, if this is noticably less "freezy" running XP, I might need to get one of these as a replacement.
