I'm sorry but sometimes you just have to admit, yo Chrome looks cool lets copy it!
IE8/Chromium both use the dual button system on the right, and as Mozilla dev have rightly reasoned, without the menubar, it makes sense for the "Awesome bar" to be within a tab, not outside of it.
I do believe these designs become fleshed out shortly after Chrome burst onto the scene.

It doesn't take a post-grad student to realise the site in its current implementation is fundamentally flawed in its design. Once again, words fail me. Good on him for writing it though - rather shake the stick at them now before its live.
The real problem in comparing MS to Apple is that Apple just haven't done enough wrong to see that storm of disquiet flood over the IT media.
MS blunders range from stifling costs, prohibitive anti-competitive practices, lousy buggy code, ineffectual responses to serious, significant problems, to blatant lies through their humourous PR department. Plus more besides.
Apples blunders, while significant (I'm not a big fan of the company, but a few of their products are great) just don't weigh the same on the scales of shame & disgust - yet.
