Of course it is marketing blather. Microsoft reinvents their developer paradigms continuously, and it isn't just some random mistake. There's plenty of money to been made every time they do it, from the Microsoft Certifications to the books to the new licensing deals for third party tool makers. Leading us all around by the nose is a big part of their business plan, of course they have a new paradigm for developers.
As a Thunderbird user I have to meeting this news with... indifference. Thunderbird is an email client that does exactly what it should. What else does it have to do? Sure, everybody is using gmail now, but what is so innovative about it? Once you get past the fancy UI gewgaws the only "innovation" I see is that whenever I send or receive an email that contains the word underpants the UI displays an ad for underpants. Some innovation!
Email clients are more or less the same as they have been for years and don't need to do more, I'll take Thunderbird as it is and wake me when a real change is afoot.
You mean you are saying bankers don't wield an inordinate amount of power in society? That doesn't seem plausible, even when dismissed as "capitalism-as-conspiracy". But then again, this is the Register, home of those who love computer scientists but hate climate scientists and global-warming-is-a-conspiracy theorists.
No, the new "programming model" isn't COM, or anything similar. Actually it is called WinRT and it's basically a replacement for Win32. The thing is it's for Metro, the phone and tablet UI (which, for whatever reason, you will be able use on your PC as well). It's not replacing the Windows desktop and is not meant to. And programming apps to run in the Metro UI using WinRT is not the end of .NET. Hell, even Win32 isn't going away. So don't you all get your hopes up. Metro isn't replacing the desktop, and nor could it for the foreseeable future (what? Don't think being able to fondle your PC will increase your productivity?)
Begs the question, are all those cloud developers *really* needed? Or is this massive increase in "need" more driven by clueless execs who don't care what the technology is, damn the consequences, but want their systems running on whatever new technology is the current trend hottie?
No, people here (collectively) see the situation as another notch in the US of A's belt of hypocrisy (trust me, I'm an American, hypocrisy is a badge of honor here). Your argument is an assumed straw man that nobody has actually argued. Go ahead and take down the zero people who have said there should be no private material anywhere. Too bad tasers are far more likely to be used for compliance than as an alternative to live ammunition. And now the coppers will have every reason to go Dick Cheney on those cranky grandmas whom hey like to show what's what.
